Service and quality have declined lately. I wish they would get back to their old quality and service, because it feels like they are cutting corners now despite their semi-limited hours. Drink quality has declined as well, which is really disappointing. The only thing that keeps me coming back is the gluten free kitchen, homemade tortillas, and pork belly tacos.

Eek. This place has sadly declined. Used to be some of the best tacos in Richmond, but went yesterday and was very disappointed. Flavorless guac and chips, tacos were dry and stale, drinks were just ok. Server was friendly but was unable to keep up with the 4 tables that were seated. A table that entered after us were eating before we were even asked for our order. I really hope it was just a fluke and maybe some staff didn’t show up that were supposed to because I haven’t had a dining experience this bad in a long time.

We stopped by for a quick afternoon snack and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly we were taken care of. In spite of the fact that there was only one waiter and many tables occupied, Gavin did an exceptional job with an excellent attitude. The food was delicious; the extra plus is the restaurant is dog friendly. I’d definitely come back!

First time dining here. The house margarita was tasty and is a good value. Their selection of tequilas seemed impressive. What was not impressive were their sauces/dips. The guacamole was absolutely flavorless, the pico just tasted like watery diced tomatoes, and their house-made hot sauces all tasted extremely bland. I appreciate that they had a selection of sauces though. We got tacos and those were pretty good… I really just wanted a nice hot sauce to set it off! The frijoles charros were pretty good as well.

The staff was great! Everyone was so pleasant. Happy hour menu was small but the drinks were pretty good. We had the fish & chicken tacos, both were good & filling. I do recommend. Not wheelchair accessible is one negative. And after happy hour ended one margarita cost a little over $20🙄

What a gem! We made a point to stop at this restaurant on our way back from vacation. The food was fresh, homemade, perfect level of heat. You couldn’t ask for better ambiance – Mexican decorations and popular songs playing in Spanish. Our kids delighted in the taco platter while I enjoyed lingua “gorditas” – homemade corn pitas of a sort. Whatever you do remember to order margaritas and churros!!!!

For someone who has been to almost every mexcican restaurant in the city , literally from chain to local … this is probably my least fav !

the price and then you dont even get chips and salsa with an order of 20$ for 3 tacos I mean sheesh …

the steak was not seasoned the chicken was barely seasoned …

I probably wouldnt come back here . I rarely leave reviews but there are way better places to go.

Tacos were good, but the fresh salsas needed depth, and the “spicy” one needed heat. I’m not a “it has to be hot” person, but they were missing something essential, and the salsas make the good, especially when it comes to street tacos.

It was nice to not have to worry about gluten cross-contamination. It’s a completely gluten-free kitchen and even the burritos and tres leches cake are gluten-free… Unfortunately, they were out of the cake.

They were wonderfully friendly and the music was loud and kept my feet tapping.

I applied to work here. I am more than qualified and for some reason the manager got upset I had to reschedule a second interview, and just ghosted me. The reviews are mixed. They just stole a bunch of recipes from the previous Mexican owners. Cultural appropriation at its finest. It was an awful experience. Maybe they discriminated because I’m actually Mexican and thy want to keep it Blanco in la cucina. It bothers me that no one is actually Hispanic that owns this place or In management. Maybe they have 1 or 2 in the kitchen, but they aren’t taking notes. Every restaurant in Richmond now is stealing food from other cultures (especially Mexican and Asian) and they aren’t even doing a good job of it. If you want authentic Mexican go to La Milpa, or another Mexican run restaurant. I’m glad to not be a part of this kitchen colonization. I’m not salty, this is what Google reviews are for.

GONE DOWN HILL. Used to come here often with my husband for authentic Mexican food. Sadly since it’s reopening and change in ownership the food has taken a turn for the worst. Upon our first time back we excitedly ordered tacos de Al pastor, carnitas, asada, and chorizo, EACH ONE lacked flavor and salt. We tried to compensate with the salsa provided which unfortunately also lacked flavor. The once handmade tortillas are now thick, crispy and muuuuch smaller. We’re extremely disappointed that one of our favorite Mexican restaurants now tastes authentically American. A huge loss for the Richmond community.

Nothing Mexican about this place. You can even see the majority of the staff here is white. Talk about white washing. There’s even a mandatory 20% fee, plus the ridiculous prices on the menu. Not worth it at all.

  35. Jamie Kanell- Barry 2023/06

We ate here yesterday. The fresh corn chips were okay- they could have been elevated with some salt. The queso dip is good, the house salsa was passable, but the guacamole was bland. The Chile relleño was really tasty and had a good balance of flavors. The carne asada taco was a little tough and bland. Great gluten free beer and very nice tres leches cake. We would come back to try different menu items and repeat order the items we enjoyed.

I never leave reviews but I just had to. I had high hopes for this place seeing all the reviews. I ordered gorditas, tostadas, a burrito, and some rice and everything besides the tostadas which weren’t even that good, everything tasted terrible and bland. The rice tasted like seafood and was crunchy it was gross, even the rice in my burrito, not to mention they charge 4-5$ for 1 tostada or 1 papusa?! T W E A K I N. That’s insane. Let Tio Juan cook cause Pablo you ain’t it my guy.

Their food slays 10/10. Last time we were in Richmond, we liked this so much that we made a stop in Richmond just to have lunch here! Not only is the food that good, this spot is like 30 seconds off of Highway 95. Very convenient and well worth a spot if you are in Richmond or just passing by. Their breakfast AND lunch is fantastic. No bad choices on the menu, although I must say I was not yet brave enough for the cow tongue 😝.

  52. Christopher Thompson 2022/09

I don’t like leaving bad reviews. But should’ve listened to all the other reviews that talk about a lack of flavor. Yes the food is gluten free, but is it flavor free too? Service was somewhat slow and food came out warm and not hot. it was probably sitting for awhile before it got to our table. Also note, they had a 20% service charge to your bill automatically so idk they prob be getting stiffed on tips because the food and service is so mid.

WARNING: 20% mandatory fee. Tio Pablo attached a Mandatory 20% fee to my ToGo Order. I consider this a DECEPTIVE PRACTICE as they do NOT tell you this when you place your order. By the time you add their FEE and TAX (admittedly out of their control) you are paying MORE than 33% over the advertised price. Additionally, the sides you get included with the item are very very small. The potatoes on the left were a separate item while the ones on the right were the included side for my entree. Neither one is very large, but the side for the entree is downright tiny. The food is good, but not worth the anger I felt over the entire transaction. If you are going to have a 20% mandatory fee for ALL food delivered OR picked up then just increase your prices. I would not be mad if that was the case. Yes, I would have ordered less food to keep my bill within budget, but you would have had a customer that sang about how good the food was, not how deceptive your pricing practice is.

I have celiacs disease and this place just wasn’t up to par. I’m not sure if that was the fault of the server or the chefs, but what I got looked like a mess, barely didn’t taste like a mess, and made me feel like a mess later because of how sick I got. I’m sure it could’ve been an off day, and the food wasn’t awful, but it wouldn’t be a place I’d recommend, unfortunately.

Updating my review. We had very poor service here last time, witnessed 2 other tables of customers being blatantly mistreated and were ignored when we reported it to management.

Too bad because food is so good! Maybe we’ll do takeout.

The yuca was good, however the portions were small. The food wasn’t amazing. There was a deceptive 20% mandatory tip that was actually in the 30% range when calculated. I payed $25 just for myself, which was not worth it for the quality and portion of food. Will not be coming back unfortunately.

  89. Holly Yeary 2021/11

Amazing pupusas and the lengua tacos were fantastic!

  90. Mairi-Allegra Boyd 2021/11

Absolutely amazing! I highly recommend this spot. Some of the best Mexican I’ve had in years, and I’ve been celiac for 17 years. It’s somewhat small but the service was excellent. We got the warm cheese dip to share, I got enchiladas, and tried the quesadilla, and the steak burrito. My brother said the gorditas were delicious too. I wish I lived in the area so I could come here all the time.

  91. K Ghy 2021/11

You know when you go without something for a long time and then when you have it again it makes you feel like an idiot for going so long without it?? Or is that just me? Either way, this place is amazing! If you’re reading this and don’t know what to get, get the carnitas tostadas. They were so good! Make sure to get the onions and jalapeños with them! My husband got the steak burrito and loved it! We’ll definitely be back!

  93. 621 Studios 2021/10

It’s the food, it’s the drinks, it’s the lively decor and Tio Pablo himself. A place for a good tequila and one of the best mixed drinks in Richmond.

  94. Summer J 2021/10

We had a family dinner here at Tio Pablo’s, and had a wonderful evening! The food and drinks were delicious! Our server, Randy, was very sweet and patient with our kids and our whole group! He was there when we needed him, but gave us plenty of time and room to catch up with family we hadn’t seen in a long time! The atmosphere was simple, calm and comfortable, as if we were hanging out at home!

  95. Katherine Ferranti 2021/10

Super cute spot and the margarita’s are perfection. Went on a Monday evening so place was nearly empty. Enchiladas verdes were a great portion, including the sides, but the sauce was a bit too acidic. Tacos were fine, but the tortillas were a too thick to have been doubled up. Maybe the homemade ones are better and we’d try that next time. The music is terrible – just a constant vibration from bass. Fortunately the music was not loud as well. I’m definitely getting old that the music choices will steer me away from a future visit. But I probably would go back for a drink and some queso!

Tip Pablo is a cozy taqueria that makes fantastic authentic Mexican food. The restaurant is 100% gluten free, which was a huge draw to my celiac wife. But for those who worry that the lack of gluten affects the flavor, don’t let that stop you from giving Tio Pablo a shot. The tortillas (and gorditas and everything else) are freshly handmade and are every bit as tasty and flavorful as the fillings.

We travel significantly out of our way to stop at Tio Pablo every time we travel anywhere near Richmond, and I wager that if you give it a shot, you will do the same.

  98. Katherine Ferranti-Cholich 2021/09

Upgrading a prior review from 3 stars up to 4. Hands down the best margarita in Churchill. They use fresh juice and mix to order. If you want a great marg, this is the spot. We ordered different food this time and were much happier with our choices! Food isn’t the most amazing but it’s solid and we’ll be back. Great queso. This time I had a chicken quesadilla which was perfect. Husband had a few different choices of taco this time. Cecina taco is 10/10 if beef tacos are your jam. Upgrading to the handmade tortilla was worth the $.

Tacos 🌮, margaritas and it’s all Gluten free! This place had atmosphere and great house margaritas. I had the carne asada Gordita, the tacos el pastor, a carnitas taco and a chicken quesadilla (Togo) and for my desert the tres leches! The flavors reminded me immensely of being back in Mexico! Friendly staff. If I’m ever back in Richmond I’ll be visiting!

  102. Susan Tellier 2021/08

My friend ordered a meatless dish that had little pieces of meat in it. Not good. My food was ok. It wasn’t hot. If the potatoes were hot and had salt n pepper it would have been better. Small overpriced drinks but thats RVA. Our server was very sweet and quick. We sat outside. Service was friendly and pleasant. She did take the meated dish off the bill. I’d go back there.

  103. Derek Carter 2021/07

  113. Ashley Hyman 2021/05

Food was bland. Too crowded. Service was mediocre. The bathroom is nasty. And to top it off, there was a spider in my to-go container and the waitress had zero concern. Good job Tim Pablo.

  114. Aman Sharma 2021/05

EVERYTHING IS NATURALLY GLUTEN FREE, how awesome! We tried the quesadilla here, gordita, and chicken enchiladas and they were all delicious. The only thing that threw me off is a 20% service fee tacked on to the final bill for a party of 3. Not sure if this is a RVA standard since it wasn’t the case at other restaurants in the area…

  115. Annalena Sichel 2021/05

I’ve been to Tio Pablo’s now about three times and have no motivation to go back. The food is rediculously mediocre at best, I’m not sure why it has gotten decent reviews. Each time I’ve had something different. I could make better tacos at home by a long shot and the burrito was just bad. Drinks not good either. Literally choose any other taco place in Richmond for better food.

  119. Katherine McConnell 2021/04

Food was ok. Rice lacked seasoning and flavor. Nopalos was plain. I could be biased because I am from San Antonio and am used to our Mexican food, but I expected more flavor (salt mainly). The Chile rellano was good, but again flank steak was under seasoned. Need plenty of salsa for flavor which we had to ask for unlike the other tables around us. Waitress seemed like she wasn’t having a good day. Our spicy margaritas were on point. Best margarita I’ve had in Richmond and the surrounding areas which is why I gave this place 4 stars. I expected more because I eat Mexican in Texas all the time.. Will be back when in town because I LOVE that this is a gluten-free restaurant, and I am always willing to give a small business another try.

  127. Abigail Macdonald 2021/03

Such a cute spot in downtown! Second time being here and they didn’t disappoint!!!! Would highly recommend margs are $7 super cheap for Richmond and food is reasonably priced for Downtown Richmond!!!

  128. Carlos Pineda 2021/03

The space looks pretty cool, but there was only one person attending 5 tables, answering the phone, taking care of take out, taking payments and playing barista (not fair) the food was pretty standard, the carnitas tacos in my opinion the meat needs to be shredded before putting it in the tortilla, the way it was served was in big chunks and the langua tacos were really off. But I know they can do better

  129. Anna Nickles 2021/03

Food was great! The service was okay. Overall great place. We were first time customers so i wish the service was better…(update) we went again today 08-11-2021 and we sat outside. The tent shaded us but there was no fan. It would’ve been okay if I didn’t have my baby with me.

The papusas were phenomenal but a little small for their price. The Mexican street corn was also really good but also a little pricey. Definitely will be coming back here in the future.

  139. Kathleen Guesman 2020/12

Good staff but food was so tasteless and boring very disappointed! Got the chicken and steak tacos literally no flavor or seasoning used! Also the spicy marg was so strong but not in a good way in a cheap drink way. Couldn’t even finish the drink or tacos.

  140. Amber Cornell 2020/12

Wow wow wow! This place is fantastic. You would never guess the whole restaurant is gluten free! The pupusas blew me away, especially with the tomato and garlic sauce. Also ordered a chipotle chicken gordita and a carnitas one. Both were so good. Finally, the gluten free tres leches cake blew me away! This is my new favorite restaurant.

The bill had unexpected charges. When we asked about the extra charges the waitress told us I had misread the menu. When I pointed out again the charges were incorrect I was given another nonsensical answer. When I argued the bill was incorrect I was told it was a new menu and printed incorrect but that was the bill.

The manager, who happen to be there didn’t seem to care even and the waitress copped an attitude that I had asked a question. they didn’t seem to care all over their incorrectly printed menu and the waitresses (yes, two different ones) told me different reasons for the bill.

    I will never return.

We were promptly greeted at the door. The waitress was friendly and timely on her service. I should have taken a picture of the tacos but they looked so damn good I just dove right in.

Tio Pablos has gone above and beyond the COVID eating experience, clean, great food, and great service. My partner and I went there the other night and found that inside they have separated seating with clear plexiglass, year it still was open and sociably eased. Great place! The Chile Relleno was top notch!

  161. Mac Wallace 2020/07

Small portions, especially for the price, but what really got me was that after a horribly mixed paloma, I got some of the most bland under spiced Mexican food I’ve ever had, only reason for two stars is that your waitstaff were very courteous and friendly

  162. Jay Seees 2020/07

It’s an okay small spot in Shockoe Bottom. Just had a few drinks with friends while sitting outside in the store front. I didn’t have any food here so can’t rate that. I don’t see myself hurrying to get back there though.

  164. Sof Muench 2020/07

As a Mexican, I often avoid going to mexican restaurants because I’m often disappointed with the flavours, drinks, or price of the items. Tio Pablo offers a great ambiance inside, their alcoholic drinks are good but overpriced for what you get, and personally the flavours in the gorditas and loco tacos could be largely improved.
    Nonetheless, I enjoyed my time.

  166. C W 2020/06

They charged me a 2O% gratuity fee for placing a to go order. HUH?! They did not disclose on website or over the phone. The website does not even charge the fee for “To go” orders. I accepted that politely. BUT!!!! The food is not even tasty. Bland and not authentic AT ALL. Burrito was not even wrapped. My young daughter struggled with it and made a mess. Gordita falling apart as I pick it up. A sprinkle of lettuce-should’ve kept that. Over seasoned potatoes-go figure! Overall not satisfied! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!!! Bad Business.

  167. Carrie Perez 2020/06

Completely gluten free restaurant. Love the atmosphere and the drinks were really good. They do not have a kids menu but my youngest two had no issues finding something. They are a little on the pricey side, but definitely worth it.

  168. Paul McPherson 2020/06

We (group of 7) enjoyed the amount of fresh jalapenos in the guacamole and the chips were fresh. The cactus mixture for the tacos was delicious. All of the meats were soft and flavorful. I loved my perfectly browned papusas. The sides were enjoyed by all, especially the potatoes. The flan is good and a little more dense than we are used to, but we really enjoyed it this way. The house margarita is smooth, tart, and refreshing. The big winner was the tres leches cake! We couldn’t believe it was gluten free. We eat GF and appreciate that the entire menu is. I don’t know how they dipped gluten free cake in anything moist without it falling apart and losing all structure, but they did it. Every bite was super tasty, had strawberry filling between layers, and was eaten with a fork. The staff was friendly and competent. They do so many things right at Tio Pablo.

Awesome tacos, the rockfish avocado slaw was delicious and the pupusas were great as well- definitely coming back to try more soon

  173. Briana Smith 2020/05

The food was disgusting. Not even close to authentic tasting, did not use tortillas for tacos or burritos and they charged me extra for the beef on my taco and straws for my drinks. Everything was extra. Passion fruit margarita tasted like complete syrup. The food was tasted awful and was expensive for nothing. The driest burrito I’ve ever had in my life.

We come here maybe 2-3 times a month. The Cessina and Al Pastor are always amazing. They definitely have a heavy hand on the mojitos and margaritas. If you want authentic Mexican food come here! They do not disappoint!!

  191. Carmen Respass 2020/02

The food taste good. Not too large or too little of a serving. An all gluten free establishment, which made me feel safe about eating there without the worry of cross contamination from non gluten free items . The cost was reasonable as well.

  192. Justin Daly 2020/01

    So good!

  193. Sharai Huestis 2020/01

The two ladies who served us were very patient with us, being as one of our members had food allergies and we follow a specific diet

  194. Kelly Preus 2020/01

Great Place!! A new favorite! BEST House Margaritas with fresh lime, AND papusas!!

  195. Ray Ciarcia 2020/01

Good service and fantastic food! As parents of a child with Celiac’s, we appreciated that everything on the menu is gluten free – but we’d highly recommend it to anyone whether you care about gluten free or not.

  200. Dara Levy 2019/12

We had a great meal here. I LOVED that the entire menu was gluten free, but even if that isn’t a concern it’s still a good spot.

    Excellent authentic Mexican quisine

  205. Samantha Harvey 2019/11

Not impressed…over priced…just ok flavor. Just spent like $20 and only got two tacos (small corn tacos), maybe two tiny red potatoes (4 oz per staff), and a slice of cake. There are much better places on Richmond to go for Mexican…

  206. Tara Prien 2019/11

The tequila selection = 5 stars, but the food disappoints. It lacks the flavors and spice of what you’d expect for Mexican inspired cuisine….completely bland and the hot sauces are not picante by Mexican standards. But that’s typical of Mexican food in general in Richmond….people giving these places 5 stars for food have obviously not eaten in Texas or Mexico.

  207. Antonio 2019/11

The food isn’t bad. The price is a little steep though. $16 Carne Asada with 2 sides. What you don’t know is that the side are provided in 4oz containers, relatively small when compared to the amount of sides provided by nearby Mexican restaurants. The steak was well cooked and had a great flavor to it still. It came with grilled onions and jalapenos which really set the heat level up. I also got a $4 pupusa. Didn’t taste seasoned though. All in all, I think this place may a better bar than restaurant, but I can’t judge as I only got food here.

  208. Jeb Hoge 2019/11

Here’s why I gave five stars. Because my friend from out of town who said “I don’t eat in restaurants because no one takes my gluten sensitivity seriously” LOVED her meal at Tio Pablo. The reviews and recommendations and the menu’s detailed explanation of their zero-gluten stance were enough to convince her to take a chance, and she got to have a great meal on vacation with friends.

Me, I don’t have food allergies and like all kinds of things, and I definitely didn’t feel like I was sacrificing my own enjoyment. This was authentic, honestly delicious food. Also, the decor is a lot of fun and the prices were very reasonable.

  209. Shanis Navas 2019/11

  214. Bianca Kauffman 2019/10

Great restaurant, my daughter has a wheat allergy and this had many GF options. Corn tortillas for some great tacos. Horchata was good also.

  215. Romania Newby 2019/10

A wonderful place to eat. The atmosphere is great, the food was excellent to the point that I’m still thinking about it and the price was shockingly reasonable. I will frequent Tio Pablo again whenever I visit Richmond, Virginia

  216. Celia 2019/10

Arrived when they opened on a Sunday. Was given a table, water and menus. Then they forgot us. Was never looked at again. Had to ask for a waitress. Food was good but we were never offered any sauces, no limes on plate. Felt like we were being given a Phuk u response cause we had to ask to be served.

  226. Jose 2019/09

How hard is it to find a gluten free place!!! This is amazing. I had their al pastor tacos and the tres leches. It was amazing. I haven’t had tres leches in forever and this did not disappoint! Give it a try! A true gem!

  227. Karl 2019/09

Good, service was a little slow but I imagine it was due to the Thursday night salsa crowd. Food was good, not great but the tacos are affordable and wortth the price. It has my blessing

  228. Jeremiah Caldwell 2019/09

Outstanding Mexican restaurant. The Mexican street corn was so good we ordered it twice. The tacos were street style, and we’re excellent. Can’t recommend it highly enough

  229. Madeleine 2019/09

Yummy gluten free options. Some of the food is overpriced for the portion like the tacos but otherwise yummy. Great if you are gluten free or vegetarian 😊🍅🌿 I assume they have a lively bar on weekends. …

This had been on my radar for a while, and it was absolutely up to the hype. It was wonderful to be able to share food with friends without worrying, as someone with celiacs. And the food itself was so good I needed to try a bit of everyones.

  237. Harmony Russell 2019/08

We’ll start with the tres leches…OMG, off the chain! Will go back for that alone. For my entree I went with gorditas, incredibly excited to be able to eat these gluten free treasures. But like some of the other reviews, I found the food to be very bland. Mexican is one dish I never have to add salt to, but for the first time found myself reaching for it to add some flavor. I’ll definitely give them a second try, for the cake alone!

  238. Samuel Alvarez 2019/08

By far one of the best authentic restaurants in Richmond. Service, food and drinks are amazing and the atmosphere couldn’t be better. Great people and the owner is a very humble and approachable person. You won’t regret coming here!

  254. Britt D.K. Gratreak 2019/06

I knew as soon as I tasted their melted cheese that these guys were very serious about making stuff tasty. The full gluten free menu was a comfort. The only thing to complain about is the amount of food you get when you get an order to go is very, very tiny.

We take the family here regularly. Teens eat heaps and are happy. Good tastes good. Free tea awful and tables sticky but all part of the experience. We came here quite often, but the staff was not friendly at all. I feel somehow they are rude to us, probably too sensitive because of their mood at that time.

  264. Carly Jannone 2019/05

Food was pretty good, the service DRAGGED. And there were only two tables in the whole place? That was extremely disappointing. Couldn’t even get my drink ordered and the waitress was so unprofessional. Makes no sense when a tip should be important.

  281. Kaylee Moreno 2019/03

Good portions, cool decorations and good music. The fresh pico with chips was refreshing and enjoyable especially on a hot summer day. Pupusas were a little greesy and so were the tortillas for street tacos. Good portions and readonable prices and good variety of homemade salsas.

Took a chance based on Google comments. Great find and the food was very good. Got to come back on the weekend for the lobster.crab quesadilla.

  287. Christa Moore 2019/02

Best Mexican food in Richmond, hands down. The lengua is so flavorful and tender…and I was pleasantly surprised by the Mezcal options. Warning: this is not Americanized Mexican. Flour tortillas are not an option. If you want bland quesadillas or burritos swimming in liquidy queso…this is not the place to go.

  288. Charles Brooks 2019/02

Very good, authentic pork belly street tacos. Also the third best jeuvos rancheros I have ever had in my life (Behind Juneau, AK and Rocky Point, MX).

  292. Ben Scandlen 2019/01

Tried a variety of tacos and they were all good, though I was a little disappointed in the Al pastor. I usually love Al pastor tacos and these were fine but didn’t live them.

  293. Ron Katz 2019/01

Definitely a funky place and cool vibe. The margaritas were yummy and I definitely give 5 stars for the chips and salsa. Though the tacos were beautifully described they did not live up to my expectations as they were kinda bland. The guac was good but it too needed salt and lime to make it shine. Beware the onions and jalepeno side, it packs a serious kick.

  299. Kendall von Michalofski 2018/12

This place is amazing. We come here all the time! Try the tacos de cecina or a gordita de carnitas–those are my favorites. You will be totally full after two tacos and a gordita or two. We love it when they have elotes locos on the menu. I always order several of their house margaritas. The breakfast burrito is really good too, on the weekends. They also play some of the best música Latina. You will not be disappointed if you go here!

  300. Jason Ciaschi 2018/12

Good food, very friendly staff, unique interior. The drink list was huge and had a great selection of spirits. My only complain was the portions. My wife and I both finished all our meal and were still a bit hungry and the total was about $30 which included ice tea for me and water for her. If the price were lower or the portions were larger it would be 5 stars hands down. I would go back again and plan to order an appetizer to fill me.

Amazing food! If we visit Richmond, we know we have to come visit this place. They have a great menu, great staff, and always seem to have interesting specials. The food is a nice change from the standard boring tex-mex we are used to.

Winston hot spot: margaritas in the RVA

This place is small and cozy, it has charm and style, it has food to start the night and to kick you out of bed when you have a hangover. A great and classical tequila collection; from Pape to Azul. There is a happy hour from 3 – 6 pm, Monday thru Saturday. Order three tacos, a beer, and a shot to start the night right.

  316. Carlos Ramirez 2018/10

Since when as a service provider you get to determine that you earn a gratuity in this place they take it up to themselves to charge you a 20 % gratuity that probably would have been my tip anyway but it’s the principle that to me that is a hidden fee . It’s my fault in a way I should have gotten up and left when I thought about it but I kept my cool . This is not a Mexican restaurant .it shows as such when you Google it.

  317. Egypt Shari 2018/10

The food here was ABSOLUTELY delicious. The creamiest cheese-est pupusas I’ve ever had. The salsa Verde chicken enchiladas were good but no match for how delicious the carnitas, El pastor, carne asada tacos were! Lastly I had a margarita with top shelf tequila and it was one of the best I’ve had out here in the East coast (I live in Chesapeake/Norfolk area)

  318. Maria Gonzales 2018/10

Restaurant’s style is very nice. Their fajitas are a bit different, can’t say how, but I quite like them. Sauces are all really good and the guac is pretty creamy. Good salt on the chips.

  319. Jose Alvarez 2018/10

The food here is very delicious. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the service was slow. There wasn’t a whole lot of people in there. But I would recommend this place to anybody.

Holy cow! Easily the best Mexican I’ve had in years. I used to live in Southern California and this feels very similar.
We both had tostadas, Carne Asada and Carnitas. Wow. This simple dish is elevated to the best version. The plate comes with sides. I can recommend the beans and the pickled peppers.
This segues to my nit picks nicely I tried to look up the names of those side dishes but found their website down or unhelpful.
The pickled peppers were perfectly spicy and reminded me of the hot carrots I used to get at taco stands back in the southland. The beans were great too.
The only negatives would be the uncomfortable chairs and the poor website. The food is amazing and I’ll be back, a lot

The food was dry and unflavorful. The sides were terrible, I got the sauteed onions and they tasted raw. Overall there food is overpriced for what they offer

  334. Matt Hughes 2018/07

Had a horrible experience with a server during brunch. I ordered a the huevos ranchero with shrimp, and when it came out it had sour cream all over. When I inquired about it, the waitress snapped back and said it’s listed on the menu. As I am usually pretty aware to notice sour cream on a menu item, I checked a menu and confirmed it was indeed not listed. When we brought this to the severs attention, she said “queso fresca includes sour cream at real Mexican restaurants,” and proceeded to imply it was my fault and I should of known. After lots of persistence, I convinced the server to re make the order, at which point I received a plate that didn’t even have shrimp on it and very little ranchero sauce. It looked like a pissed off cook had slapped it together and was not something I wanted to eat, despite the fact I was starving at this point. When I inquired about that, the server stated first that I had ordered vegetarian, at which point we brought up the fact that the first one had shrimp, to which she replied “well we are only charging you half anyways” and implied I should just suck it up. I was then billed for half of the shrimp version, at which point I made it known how unsatisfactory their service had been, and finally had the item removed from my bill after lots of attitude.

They need to update their menu with actual ingredients and hire servers that have experience in customer service. I only gave them two stars because after arguing with her she took it off the bill, but I’ll never be back.

Fresh, Authentic, Delicious Mexican food! (That just so happens to be entirely gluten free!) I ordered the huevos chorizo taco and the carnitas taco, both of which tasted and looked incredible. The chips and guac with fresh pico salsa made an excellent appetizer. Service was friendly and the food came out very fast. The atmosphere is quaint and artistic. I would absolutely be back and have already recommended it to friends.

  336. John Burke 2018/07

Guacamole is good, not a lot of character or spice, but that might be a personal preference. Margaritas also solid but not close to the best in the city as they claim. Tacos are as good as any in the city, the specials we amazing though the home made tortilla and mariscopa tacos were as good as I’ve had with a great line garnish. Queso was solid, great service and a very good happy hour. Environment is classic and authentic, will visit again.

  337. Won-Suk Choi 2018/06

    Fantastic foodtry the shrimp taco.

  338. Silver Persinger 2018/06

Still a great untapped resource for a quick weekend brunch starting at 10 AM. Fresh, flavorful, delicious, and authentic Mexican (unlike a majority of bland Mex-American restaurants in town). One of my favorite restaurants. Despite being here for a number of years, it is still a hidden gem and one can often easily get a seat here and the food comes out quickly. Good place for a quick bite. Casual atmosphere, friendly staff, and taco/tostada combo plates starting at $10.

  339. Adam Ronen Gorlovitzki 2018/05

    Excellent and gluten free.

  340. Alex Ratti 2018/05

    Delicious but small portions

  341. Adora Parker 2018/05

Amazing food and everything is gluten free!

  342. Ted Heck 2018/05

Great tacos & margaritas, cozy atmosphere.

  343. Afton Trent 2018/05

Good food but they don’t serve floor tortillas, only corn

  344. Richmond Allen 2018/05

The food is all fresh and tastes great. Good prices, and service.

  345. Andrea Menzies 2018/05

Great food at a good price. A sit down place open late next to downtown night life. They have great gorditas! Hard food to get in Virginia.

  346. Joshua (Tigecaller) 2018/05

My wife and I thought we would give this little restaurant a try…. we were blown away!!!! My wife who has celiac disease was so excited to be able to eat and feel like a normal person since the whole place is dedicated gluten free. The food is amazing and the waitress are very attentive to your needs. Plus your food comes very quick after you order. This is now our favorite Mexican restaurant by far!

  347. Terry Corbin 2018/04

    Wonderful!

  348. Jared Lotti 2018/04

    Best tacos I’ve had downtown.

  349. Rabbi Scott Nagel 2018/04

Best taco in RVA, splurge for the homade tortillas!!

  350. Jeremy Griffin 2018/04

Food was great and authentic. Service was barely acceptable

  351. E Grove 2018/04

They seem to never have enough people working here. The food is delicious but don’t come if you want a quick meal

  352. Connie Sexton 2018/04

The gorditas were AMAZING! All glGlut free restaurant! The tres leches was to die for! Bringing my clients!

  353. Warren Wallace 2018/04

Super fresh, great food, their chipotle chicken is the bomb! Alcohol is fairly priced and a great selection.

  354. james cook 2018/04

Decent food. Terribly overpriced for semi authentic Mexican. Happy hour isn’t even a good deal.

  355. Jinesh Shah 2018/04

Really a good place for a quick dinner. Quality of the food and the service is really good. They made really good veggie quesadilla. They have a good ambiance and also wide variety of the beer selection as well. Place has the character in it. 😉 …

  356. Ann Lhospital 2018/04

Yummy horchata and beans, my chicken enchiladas and husband’s shredded beef tacos were solid. My friend had to send back a chili relleno back to the kitchen for melting but said it was great in round 2. Small place with loud and good music, big communal table in the middle, amenable to kids!

  357. Chris Bailey 2018/04

This restaurant is delicious. Authentic, fresh, and flavorful. Different hot sauces, tons of different top shelf tequila, and a friendly staff. The food is fresh and well prepared. The chicken tostadas were simple but well made. The pork belly tacos were fantastic. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  358. Edward O'Beirne 2018/04

Seemed like quality ingredients and well-intentioned recipes but man, it was really lacking in flavor and spice, especially tacos al pastor (pork). Service was meh. Prices are fair and lunch portions were very sensible. I would return to try other dishes, but not in a hurry.

Awesome atmosphere, service is excellent, food and drinks are great! Yum!

  361. Pamela Goetz 2018/03

The Food was amazing and the staff were very nice. Would recommend to my friends.

  362. Miguel Cueto 2018/03

delicious authentic food with a great tequila bar. Always get the elotes here, they are the best

  363. Angelica Medina 2018/03

A little over priced considering the quality of the food. The beans were bland and my rice was cold. I’ve had better Mexican food for way cheaper. I paid about $14 basically for 2 tiny tostadas and didn’t even eat the sides. This restaurant does not live up to the hype food wise.

  364. E. Ce Miller 2018/03

Obsessed with this place! Love all the taco filling options/combos with great selections of sides, and the margaritas make my life. Even though this space is small I’ve never had to wait a terribly long time for a table, and the service is always efficient.

  365. Wayne Harris 2018/03

Food was delicious. Service meh… I’m still waiting for my bill. Wife and I shared Tostada’s De Cesina and Tacos De Cesina. Absolutely amazing flavor. The House Margarita was good for rail tequila. Upgrade for 2 bucks that we weren’t told about. Weren’t told of Happy hour specials from waitstaff. But it’s on display if you stop in. The food makes up for the service that seems to come up a tad short.

  366. Tina Robinson 2018/02

    Great food and beautiful presentation.

  367. A. Valerie Silveira 2018/02

    Gluten-free Authentic Mexican Mecca!

Great Mexican Restaurant downtown! Food is flavorful and authentic.

  371. Allen Baugh 2018/02

Great atmosphere, delightful service, delicious Tacos, jalapeno cheesecake was great.

  372. Thomas Decker 2018/02

Waitress was super nice and helpful. Loved the art work, the hot sauce is actually hot 😉

  373. Jason Harvey 2018/02

Favorite place in the city to get authentic Mexican food. Pro tip: just get whatever is on the specials board, I’ve never been disappointed!

  374. Ian Angel Nixon 2018/02

Best tacos I’ve had since I moved to the east coast and I don’t live in Richmond (grrrrr). I love this place fantastic bartender, great hole in the wall feel, and perfect tequila selection.

  375. Ella Bandy 2018/02

Fresh, fast, delicious flavors. Whether you’re looking for a yummy brunch, lunch, dinner or cocktail, this restaurant hits the spot. All gluten free! Cool ambience and great prices. Get dessert!

  376. Gavin Steward 2018/01

    Dry tacos

  377. SailboatSteve 2018/01

Good food, great ambiance, a little pricey for what it offerred. $75 for 3 people with no alcohol.

  378. Colleen Forst 2018/01

My GF lives for this place, and I would marry their mariscos gordita. HH $5 margaritas are great, sides are just okay.

  379. Anna Hodges 2018/01

Really awesome atmosphere and great fresh food. The tacos were amazing and 100% gluten free. Definitely recommend

  380. Christopher Thornley 2017/12

    One word,Authentic!

  381. Dustin Jefferies 2017/12

Great lunch spot for middle of the day

  382. The KalelFan 2017/12

The place is cute and the art is lovely. The service is wonderful. I ordered the brunch bagel (Udi is worst brand for gluten free bagel), lox, egg, and smear. I asked for over medium and the egg was barely cooked. The other issue was the pouring of hollendaise sauce over the entire stack, which was not on the menu and is not good to eat. The salmon and cream cheese were excellent. I would go back but try just gluten free taco items next time 🙂

  383. Ellen Foster 2017/11

Yummy! Service pleasant and efficient. Hope to come again.

  384. Steven Dominguez 2017/11

Authentic Mexican Tacos with HIGH QUALITY INGREDIENTS! I CAN’T stress enough that Tio Pablo’s does not sacrifice quality for margins! In addition: the speed of service, prices, and excellent, “customer service first” oriented staff really sets them apart in all of downtown Richmond, not just in their specific food genre.

My only minor suggestion is that the side portions could maybe be 10-15% larger than they are and it would be a perfect

RECAP: you won’t find better authentic mexican tacos in all of Richmond and I can’t wait to go again.

  385. Justin McCoy 2017/10

    Friendly staff good food.

  386. Eddie Payne 2017/10

    Friendly staff and good food.

  387. Bruce Blizard 2017/10

The pozole special with two taquitos was excellent.

  388. Ken Rhoda 2017/10

Recommended by my son and his girlfriend. Delicious!!! Elote is a wonderful discovery!!! Tostadas we’re very good. Good margaritas!

  389. Robert Gilligan 2017/10

Really good authentic Mexican food, nice staff. We’ve gotten take out from them multiple times, and my only complaint is that they usually forget a side or salsa. Everything else is good though

  390. Marco Montanez 2017/10

Review your check before paying. I ate dinner with my family and was charged gratuity even though we on had 4 and 1 baby, the menu specified parties over 6. Plus they charge you for every meat choice on there items without specifying on there menu. Food not consistent and Service is slow and obvious the servers do what they want with no managers to regulate what is charged. I called all next day to finally have owner return call and insisted to return entire cost of meal. I checked and that was not the case. I recommend if you want a more reasonably priced Hispanic meal go somewhere else. Place is not professional sorry

  391. big G 2017/10

Food and service outstanding! The best and most authentic Mexican food I’ve ever tasted in RVA. Be aware that the entrees can be spicy, as is the peanut salsa in the container brought to the table. I loved that everything on the menu is gluten-free. Menu has an outstanding selection of entrees. I will definitely return.

  392. Scott Hodges 2017/09

    Gluten free. Fresh. Authentic

  393. Nicholas Bergh 2017/09

Mediocre food, my burrito was burrito filling with a tortilla on top, and the burrito was mostly rice.

  394. Ryan McPeters 2017/09

Nice atmosphere, good for small groups, food was good but not spectacular.

  395. Jared Grove 2017/08

Great food but could use a larger dining area

  396. David Cowger 2017/08

Tio Pablo is a little small so you may want to try to go at off peak times, however the food is the closest to authentic Mexican food I have found in the area so far. It was all prepared quickly and tasted great. The Chile Relleno was great, and they offered in with cheese which is rare in Virginia it seems, and it is honestly the best way to have them. If you’ve never had a Chile Relleno with cheese make sure to try it.

  397. Geoff Wilson 2017/08

Now this was some fantastically presented and tasting Mexican food! We loved the decor and simple seating arrangement that you don’t see very much as it forces people to get out of their personal bubbles. The managers and staff were excellent and we had a fun chat while sitting at the bar ordering up a variety of foods and drinks to try a little bit of everything.

  398. Robin Cotterman 2017/07

Authentic and delicious! After visiting Central America, I was looking for authentic flavor and dishes. Tio Pablos is it! I love the tostadas!

  399. Jean Stoll 2017/07

Carnitas, and all staples (rice, guac, etc) were authentic and tasty. The fact that the menu says “all items are gluten free” is also a huge plus!! Fun atmosphere, and friendly people make this a must for food lovers in Richmond.

  400. Staci K 2017/06

Adore the pupusas and homemade bloody Mary mix in the bloody Maria.

  401. Amanda Ramirez 2017/06

Fantastic prime rib, Mexican food and everything in between! You can’t leave without trying their Amnesia Margarita!

  402. Nancy Beaird 2017/06

Best carnita taco in RVA. Excellent service, delicious food. Awesome customizable top shelf margarita. Interesting art.

  403. Kyle Carline 2017/06

Authentic! The service is good and food is fresh. It’s a small place so you could wait for a bit. But if you love Mexican style dining. Then it is worth the wait.

  404. William Testerman 2017/06

Staff was friendly and decor was nice. Service was quick and portions were acceptable. That said, entrees were bland (even using included sauces) and even top shelf margaritas had little flavor. Prices are comparable to the area but higher than traditional Mexican restaurants. For the price, there is better to be had…

  405. Michael Poltash 2017/05

Cute little place, but the food and service weren’t great. Drinks are good though.

  406. Ted LaFond 2017/05

Still love the food, service, location, and the fact that it is Gluten Free!!

  407. Kelly Steindler 2017/04

Definitely recommend getting the cheese dip. It was stellar. Went around 9:15 pm & the staff seemed a little wiped, but they were kind nevertheless. Everything is gluten free !

  408. Ian Davis 2017/04

So good. I get the huevos y chorizo tacos each time and have never been disappointed. My only qualm would be that the floor is slanted inward which can make for wobbly chairs/tables but you get used to it.

  409. Robert Fletcher 2017/03

Oh baby what a spank-tacular delight. DELISH!

  410. Kevin Rudnick 2017/03

Delicious food and delicious drinks! Excellent tacos!

  411. Jonathan Harris 2017/03

Not really the type to leave reviews unless they are positive but this place is kind of shady. For one they charge $1 more for their fish tacos than they say on the menu which isn’t the biggest deal in the world but is also not cool. My girlfriend confronted staff about the inaccurate pricing and they refused to change it so doubly uncool. The main complaint is that they admitted to using rockfish instead of mahi mahi which is just plain unethical.

As for the food, almost everything we had (fish tacos, chille relleno, guac, salsa and some sort of cactus dish) was under seasoned. The potatoes were delicious though (hence 2 stars).

So for the consumer: double check your bill and make sure you are actually getting what you pay for. For Tio Pablo: Change your freakin menus to show accurate prices and ingredients. Also invest in salt, it’s been around for all of human cookery and I promise you it will make your food taste better.

  412. Soniel Barbosa II 2017/02

Good tasting central/south American food. Must try the gorditas or the pupusa.

  413. John P 2017/02

Excellent black beans & rice plus several hot sauces. Went to Tio Pablo 3 times during my 2 week visit to Richmond.

  414. Christopher Winkler 2017/02

Fast, friendly service. Food is delicious; cooked perfectly, with tons of flavor, and served fast. Great selection of beers and tequila. Restaurant is clean and seating is reasonably plentiful.

  415. Marty 2017/02

Great American style Mexican. Cool atmosphere. I went on a Friday and it was busy. We didn’t wait long for a table, and the food came out on time. Great margaritas.

  416. Patricia Lewis 2017/02

The food was bland and overpriced. Our drinks were weak, tasted like watered down mixers with a shot. I was really surprised and saddened because it is nearby and we were looking for a regular place to dine. The atmosphere and the decor are awesome but didn’t match up to the food or the experience. 2 drinks 1 entre and an app $67 down the drain.

  417. Christopher King 2017/01

    Food was great!

  418. Stu 2017/01

    Best Mexican food in Richmond.

  419. Fernanda Carballo 2017/01

I love this place the food is really delicious 😍😍😍 …

  420. Eric Lind 2017/01

The food and service here is phenomenal, and it’s great for people with celiac as the entire restaurant is gluten free. I’ve tried just about everything on the menu by now and will keep coming back for more!

  421. Julie Charbonnier 2017/01

Excellent service and decent mexican food with interesting menu offerings (salmon, tongue…). However, the food was a little bland and the bathroom and kitchen area were not very clean. Worth the visit, but wish the kitchen looked cleaner.

  422. Clark Management 2017/01

Delicious and as authentic as the places I eat in Los Angeles. Meats braised the perfection. Tamales are good as well. I have also had the enchiladas. However the Tacos are where its at. We went late on a Friday night so we were able to sit at the only table. As its mostly family style seating. Our Waiter/ Bar tender was very attentive.

  423. Grace Berg 2017/01

Overpriced and food was just OK. Tacos were not very flavorful and homemade tortillas were very dry. Would love to try again but at the price point I’ll try a new place. $50 for two people. Great decor and fun interior. If you do go, try the corn and horchata – those items were very good.

Amazing food. Amazing service. This is my go-to for tacos and beers. You, my friend, should do the same.

  428. Evan Payton 2016/12

Excellent food and tequila menu. As someone with celiac, it’s great that the entire menu is gluten free!

  429. Travis Folley 2016/12

Probably my favorite restaurant. Best margaritas in town and the food is always delicious. Everything is gluten free without compromising how good it is

  430. Melanie Kurimchak 2016/12

Tio Pablo is tiny. There are 2 small tables along the front windows, two long bars on either side, and one long table directly in the middle of the place. And I love it.

Our party of 7 was seated at the long middle table. I ordered a virgin margarita and it was so yummy. They make the mix in-house and it was limey and awesome. I barely even missed the tequila. 😉 Our waitress was friendly and attentive.

The food was some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. It tasted really authentic and complex. I started off with an order of the Mexican street corn, which we passed around the table. It was jokingly referred to as the “Family Corn on the Cob” throughout our meal. It was cheesy, buttery, and as close to perfect as corn can possibly be. For my entree, I got the salmon tostadas with a side of the sauteed cactus and rice. The tostadas were killer. Our waitress brought out sauce. “This one is hot, this one is hotter, and this one is mild.” I doused by food in hot thinking it would be closer to medium. I was wrong. It was hot as Hades. My lips, tongue, and even throat were on fire. But you know what? It was still delectable. The flavors were impeccable. I thought the portions were prefect. I feel like a lot of text-mex places load you up with rice and beans and I almost always leave tons of food on my plate. Not here! The only thing I left was the cactus. I didn’t really care for the flavor and I was a little grossed out that it was served cold.

Bottom line: I would definitely come back here.

  431. Brenda Villarreal 2016/12

Great food! Closest to authentic Mexican food I’ve had in RVA. I highly recommend the fried potatoes as a side.

Tip: I should’ve ordered guac as a side (instead of black beans) for the free chips. The chips come with pico de gallo.

    reviews&photos

  432. Shannon Roulet 2016/12

Very fast service, good chips but the salsa isnt like salsa, it’s more like a tiny tomato cilantro salad. Not that it’s bad, it’s just a more “fresh” type salsa, to be honest it kinda bummed me out cause I really wanted sort of a classic red salsa. Guac is good though.

  433. Gonzalo Aida 2016/10

Authentic and delicious. Try the gorditas. And try the lengua!

  434. Joshua Knight 2016/10

Pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and the service was great.

Don’t let the humble appearance fool you. This place is legit!

  435. Elizabeth Flatterich 2016/10

An entire gluten free menu!! It was wonderful to be able to walk into a place and order without worry for the first time since I was diagnosed with celiacs. Beyond that, the food was great and our server was really friendly. Definitely coming back!

  436. Jon Lum 2016/09

Hand made tortillas, great sauces, friendly staff. 100% Gluten Free.

  437. Matthew Ready 2016/09

Gluten free? Yes. Taste free? Yes. Probably the worst tacos in Richmond. Taco Bell has better products then the “authentic” crap.

  438. Venus Libra 2016/08

Good good and drinks in a cozy fun atmosphere. My server was great!

  439. David Streever 2016/07

Very good & authentic tacos & other Mexican dishes in a quiet little spot.

  440. Chris V 2016/05

Great food compliments to the chef. Service was lacking (failed to get chips, drink order). Food was worth the trip, but will not be back.

  441. Julia Simo 2016/05

Tio Pablo’s is amazing. Their food is authentic Mexican, their Margs are incredible and the tequila menu is on point. The manager, Martin, is always extremely welcoming, friendly and just provides the best experience in town. It is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to because of the food, the atmosphere, the tequila and most importantly, Martin.

  442. Zackariah Cole 2016/05

Atmosphere 4/5. Service 5/5. Food 6/5. Came here for dinner with friends. The server was very friendly and helpful. We all ordered tacos and wow were they good. I ordered 4, but with the chips and salsa before hand, I should have done 3. They were very filling. The chips were okay, but didn’t seem very fresh. But I didn’t come here for chips. I dinged atmosphere because there are no bathrooms (at the time of this review) and the seating is family style. So there’s a chance that you may end up rubbing elbows with strangers. Fun for some, but not my cup of tea. I would definitely come here again.

  443. Jennifer Dvorak 2016/04

    Will definitely be back!

  444. David D Bigness Jr 2016/04

A small taquiera with great tacos done the authentic way. Corn tortillas doubled up with slice of lime. Try the tongue or beef hearts.

  445. Simon_top 2016/03

Super good. Waited for this place to be open to try it.

  446. Charles Schirra 2016/03

Fantastic food, and the owner is very friendly.

  447. Mike Moss 2016/03

Very average food that tries to be hip and more expensive than other cheaper, more authentic, and better tasting Mexican places.

  448. Justin Bajan 2016/03

The closest to Cali-style mexican you can find in Richmond. The entire food menu is gluten free too.

  449. Eric Tucker (Badger's Garage) 2016/03

Amazing Mexican favorites and traditional cuisine. Had the Gorditas and Bocol with sides of Guacamole, Fried Potatoes and Peppers, cheese dip and some very good fresh salsa Pico de Gallo style. We arrived near 11am for an earlyish lunch. The restaurant was slow when we got there but was picking up by the time we left meaning if you want a quiet lunch show up early and enjoy. The seating layout is very much cafeteria style, you will likely end up sitting next to strangers during peak hours as there are only a few individual tables the rest being bar style seating along the walls and banquet tables in the center.

The service was quick and all of our requests were met with care. The food arrived quickly and was hot and very fresh. The Gorditas were hands down the best I’ve had and very filling given the size. (don’t expect a fluffy gordita shell ala Taco Bell) these are dense slightly sweet corn pockets that have a wonderful texture that goes great with whatever filling you opted for. I tried the Al Pastor which is a grilled marinated pork and pineapple (sweet and salty, very juicy and tender) as well as trying the Huevos y Chorizo which is a Mexican sausage and egg mixed together (very flavorful). My wife got the Bocol, don’t remember exactly what was in it but it was wonderful (always nice dining with others that share). For a to go desert I order a Mango de Chili, something I’ve had from here before and it is such a wonderful treat on a warm day. Essentially a Mexican cart style food consisting of a peeled mango covered in Mexican spices, it’s got some kick and will leave you lips burning if you eat it from the skewer (as one should).

Excellent experience and will be back for sure.

  450. Rick Patterson 2016/02

TP are you with me! Listen this may be the smallest restaurant in RVA in terms of space – but in terms of food – this place is as large as a gospel choir! Huge flavor, authentic taste, a well versed menu with the rhythmic feel of Mexico. I’m singing their praise!

  451. Chris Valdez 2016/01

Easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in town and I’m from Southern New Mexico. The carnitas are where it’s at.

  452. Nickus “Nickus” Maximus 2015/10

Holy crap! This is gluten free!? YES! ! !

  453. Derek R. Austin 2015/09

This place is the bomb. 100% Gluten Free. Plus gluten free tres leches cake? The bomb

  454. Ethan Jankowski 2015/08

This is great place to get some seriously good food! I have only eaten there once and I will visit regularly from now on. The service was excellent and very friendly. Definitely give this place a shot. I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was so tasty and huge!

  455. Jed Munford 2015/05

Delicious. Had a variety of tacos. Everything was tasty. Will return.

House margaritas are really something special. Don’t be afraid to try something adventurous – the side options are all terrific. When they say something is spicy, they aren’t lying to you at all. Be prepared.

Wonderful food, eclectic decor & clientele, don’t trust Goggle’s street view, look for the graffiti style sign.

I’ve eaten all over the world, in Spain, Mexico, and elsewhere and also in many different Latin American restaurants in DC, New York, etc. and I was VERY impressed by what Pablo has done here. He has tried to keep it very authentic, very rustic (it’s small and simple), but the food is top-notch! Everything is made from scratch – even the chips they bring out. The pico de gallo is some of the best I’ve ever had and the sauces they give you to put on your meal are also wonderful (salsa verde, habanero, etc.) Try everything! I know I’ll be trying to get back to Richmond as soon as possible to do just that!

Super good. Waited for this place to be open to try it. Good margaritas. Good chips. Good food. Good staff. Delicious.
