I can easily say that the Roosevelt is one of the best restaurants on the east coast. The staff is so professional yet easygoing and personable. The food is made with fresh ingredients and so much love. The bar and dining room are small but cozy and nicely decorated. This place has everything to make your visit memorable. Thank you, the Roosevelt team!

I had a great experience here, my brown butter salmon was delicious. I think I can be pretty weird sometimes but when a woman stormed in with 2 bags of breast implants during our dinner and set up shop next to us for a sales pitch with a surgeon, it was both odd and also that feeling when you can’t look away. FWIW, most amusing/dramatic dinner in a long time. I thought pharma reps met in doctor’s offices but the Roosevelt must be THE place to close deals. I’ve been here three times and never had less than a stellar experience. 💥

I have been here for dinner and for a dinner during restaurant week. The Roosevelt might be one of my favorite all around restaurants in Richmond. The food is fantastic, service is always above and beyond, and the drinks are great. A bit on the pricey side but you definitely get what you are paying for.

I got the pork butt. So amazingly tender! I never had to touch my knife. Well seasoned. The collards were sauteed with good seasoning of salt and vinegar. Lastly, unlike every other potato salad I have every had in a restaurant or church potluck, perfectly seasoned. The jade sauce was a great addition. Slightly spicy, but not so much that it took away from the seasoning of the pork. The menu is a little pricey, but not so for the quality. My only complaint was a Southern woman was there was not a piece of bread with the meal. Given the quality of the meal, I forgave them for that obvious oversight.

  19. Heather Britton 2023/10

I ordered the Wild Mushrooms with pulled bacon, roasted garlic purée, and root vegetable hash and it was phenomenal! The Sweet Tea Watermelon starter was another must have! My mom ordered the fried catfish with tomato gravy and it was also amazing. Wish I was going to be here longer so I could go back and try something else because everything was so GOOD! The prices are expensive for some of the items. Our meals were $20 each plus we had the starter and two drinks. Our total was around $100.

The entire meal was magical! Seared scallops were perfectly cooked and delicious. The Wild Mushroom entree was a combination of exotic mushrooms sautéed in wine and butter. The pork butt entree was a generous portion of tender pork with cracklins, collard greens, and potato salad – every bit was delicious! Then. Dessert. A special dessert of corn pudding with a handcrafted jam of blueberries and red currants was ah-mazing. The fresh peaches were simply perfect. The panna cotta was topped with caramel popcorn – so fun and delicious! And the finger lime topping on the key lime icebox cake was like an explosion of lime pop rockets in my mouth and was the BEST.

Went to the Roosevelt to celebrate the birthday of a friend. The menu is limited. I ordered a cheeseburger well but not burnt. GF ordered smoked chicken wings and cornbread. My burger was medium at best. Got lots of fries that were hot and crispy but salty. Gf liked her wings and cornbread. We had dinner at this restaurant when they first opened and did not like it then. Won’t give it another chance.

Absolutely blown away by our meal here. We had the wings and tartare to start, the wings were amazing, the tartare was good but nothing crazy. For our mains we shared the pork shoulder and the mixed mushroom dish. They were both really really good. We also had great drinks, the year of the caprese was one of the coolest drinks I’ve ever had.

If you’re looking for a delightful atmosphere, fresh ingredients, and creative cocktails, then make sure to visit The Roosevelt in RVA! You’ll be greeted by the friendliest staff, and you’ll be charmed by the quaint dining area that makes it welcoming for everyone. The Roosevelt offers delicious spirits and a seasonal menu with natural ingredients and multiple options for dietary needs. Not only is The Roosevelt’s head chef decorated with awards, but she may even come by and chat with you while you’re dining — making this standout spot even more inviting! Also, if you’re a fan of wine, then one of the highly-ranked sommeliers can help guide you with their knowledge of all things vino! Overall, I highly recommend this all-around-wonderful restaurant. Immediately no. Everything was mediocre. And if not mediocre- it was bad. The menu reads (and is priced) like it has been nominated for something. The food “looks” good. Well some of it. The gumbo, not so much. But no. To start, the corn bread was DRY as I don’t know what. Wings were cooked well. But the Alabama sauce did little for them. Every dish was just a salt bomb- very little flavor. The service was s-l-o-w. Dessert… we got the tahini brownie, ALSO dry. Just see the pictures. Richmond has better options

Excellent Gluten Free options! I ordered the smoked pork. It was a huge hunk of por, but the real star is the collard greens: spicy & I loved them. The fried pickled okra is also very good! Our server was knowledgeable & didn’t mind going back to the kitchen & getting us answers.

Chef Leah kicked this place into another stratosphere. We try to eat at The Roosevelt regularly– dozens of times over the years. There are any number of entrees and menu items knocking on James Beard’s door. This place is outstanding. The drink selection is as good as the food. The bartenders and wait staff are all-around good folks. The kitchen churns out excellent food consistently. Last night we tried the fried feta. And how! We’ve seen restaurants come and go in recent years— very few, in my humble opinion, hold a candle to this place.

Great cocktails. Many of them seemed to be focused on mezcal and smokiness, which I loved. My wife doesn’t enjoy that as much but was able to find drinks that she really enjoyed as well.

The hummus was very flavorful and packed with veggies, pickled and not. The teres major steak was perfectly cooked medium-rare, two thumbs up. The scallops, though, were so amazing. So buttery, but light and perfectly seared, and the lentils and quinoa with it was also really flavorful. Overall the food was perfect.

Our service was also ideal. The server took the time to help us choose our drinks and food, answering our questions thoughtfully.

I’d rate this a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The service was first rate, as was almost all of yhe food. We had a small issue with our reservation, which set a poor tone for the meal. However, shortly thereafter, the chef herself brought us two delicious comp appetizers. That really demonstrates a restaurant that cares about the customer experience! I was impressed, as this level of attention is so rare. The only negative is that the servers should note when the dish being ordered is spicy hot, as the menu did not indicate that. My wife loved the yam-based entree, but couldn’t eat much of it as it was too spicy hot for her pallette. That was the only negative on the evening. We will definitely return.

Great step above just casual. Well designed interior, high ceilings, large windows, and simply delicious flavors from the cocktails, to starters, to entrees, to desserts. Mad props to the Roosevelt for making me (wheat allergy) and my friend (pregnant) feel like we were having the greatest experience. When my friend needed a mocktail they didn’t just have a generic response, they asked her specific flavors and made her amazingly curated drinks. The feta small plate they did in GF which you couldn’t tell the difference. So grateful for them and their amazing service.

We’re always looking forward to what is new & our classic favorites on the menu. Every dining experience at the bar is also super educational (in the least pretentious way). Delicious. We got the following: Black eyed pea hummus, cornbread, Grilled terres major steak, apple funnel cake, and blueberry tart. The cornbread was a bit mealy, and we learned we prefer normal hummus to black eyed pea hummus, but the steak was DELICIOUS. Great flavor and really good butter sauce to go with it. The hashbrowns it came with were done really well, also. My favorite part had to be the blueberry tart though. I would go back and order that again in a heartbeat! The blueberries were tart, but the pastry part was very sweet, which led to a really nice balance between the two. So good.

Would recommend making a reservation, since it seemed pretty crowded when we got there around 8pm.

Fancy casual spot – you could dress up but I also saw people in jeans. Very swanky interior and love the menu options. Some dishes hit the spot, while others were a total miss or just OK.

We ordered the broccoli, and lobster dumplings as an appetizer to share in our group of 3 and had three entrées; seared mushrooms, fried catfish, and the smoked yam and crème brûlée for dessert.

I loved my vegetarian option the smoke yam. Excellent smoked flavor on the black eyed peas and collard greens. Fried cauliflower was firm, crispy and soft center. Perfect dish. Only could have wanted more.

My friends loved their seared mushroom and thought fried catfish was good, not amazing.

The lobster dumpling was such a mild flavor to the point I was wondering was there any bits of lobster in it at all? The shaved fennel was the best part of this dish. There were 4 dumplings.

The crème brûlée was terrible and tiny – it tasted like meat was at the bottom. Potentially rancid or just horrible flavor. My group and I were deciding ‘do we send it back?’ We decided if our server asked us ‘how was it?’ Then we would. But, they did not ask, so we just suffered in silence and I regret it because it truly was inedible.

Fine dining married with history makes for a warm atmosphere and yummy food. The menu changes often but NEVER disappoints. Reservations are highly suggested or get there early for a welcoming seat at the bar where dinner is served, which happens to be my preference.

The service and food were fantastic . They only had a few tables because of covid restrictions and one waiter worked all the tables, but he did a great job taking orders and serving everyone. The food was delicious. I had the rockfish and it was perfectly cooked. My friend had the roast chicken and he said it was the best roast chicken he has ever had. I highly recommend this restaurants for a nice night out . It was superb.

Pleasantly old fashioned, this small but bold restaurant is nestled in a quaint neighborhood area. Parking was tough, but a few times around the block found me a small spot. Reservations are a must, but even that had me waiting an extra half an hour for a table. I couldn’t complain though, as dish after dish off the most wonderfully smelling food passed me by. It was hot and tight and the staff was at a feverish pace, busting tables and serving food. The bar tender had a constant rhythm in the background mixing drinks for the nightly patrons. I sat, enjoyed a drink and just took it all in. At my table I enjoyed a cornbread unlike I had ever had. Pie form, it just crumbled at the slightest touch. Coupled with the butter it was the perfect match. Got the catfish after asking between that or the hen. I. Was. Not. Disappointed. If your in the area, make sure you make this a stop. It is quality, quantity and perfection on a plate.

One of my favorite places in town for Southern cuisine, especially given their penchant for including things on their menu that you wouldn’t see at an average restaurant. The duck gumbo was one of my favorite dishes I’ve had there, so flavorful with the perfect amount of cajun spice. The alligator piccata and the beef tartare were also a hit for our group table. The cocktail program is always solid, and the ambience is great for dates or group dinners with friends. I always look forward to coming back periodically to try new things on the menu.

Went to The Roosevelt tonight for the second time. We love the Union Hill area anyway but this restaurant is worth the trip wherever you are from. I specifically wanted to try the double cheeseburger. That’s right, this 5 star restaurant has a double cheeseburger!! And it was excellent! The sauce was an amalgamation of mayonnaise, bacon and pepper. The hamburger was tender and cooked to perfection. We started with the BBQ chicken wings and really enjoyed them. Again, the sauce was superb. To top things off the service was excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable and our food arrived quickly and piping hot. Make a point to check out The Roosevelt! We’ll be back.

Excellent service, nice bar, tasty house red blend. Small menu, but nice selection. Both of our entrees – pork loin and steak were flavorful, as well as the clam appetizer. The cornbread was not to my liking, but probably good for those that prefer a more savory cornbread. Our server (I can’t remember his name, I think it started w/an E), was fantastic. Overall lovely dining experience. Reservations highly suggested for weekends as it is a rather small space.

The best dinner I’ve had in a long time. We started with the crawfish roll to share. Warm, soft fresh bread, and melted in our mouths. I had the scallops and it was the best scallops ive ever had in my life. i’m not exaggerating. I was so mad because it was so stupid delicious and i knew i would never experience carrots like that ever again. My husbands steak was cooked perfectly. Service was so friendly. I wish we didn’t live across the country or else we’d be here way more often. Well worth every penny spent.

I went here with my father and son recently. Hadn’t been in a long time. We had an excellent meal. This restaurant is a true supporter of the fresh local food movement and a patron of my farm. The chef described the cuisine to me once as “fun Southern”. I’d agree. Nice craft cocktail menu.

A tasty, memorable meal in Richmond, fortunately, is not hard to come by. Attentive, personal service and an excitement to create — on the fly — a non-alcoholic drink and even a dessert without a trace of alcohol is rare. The tall cocktail is a citrus and hot pepper drink, and the dessert — created just for the birthday guy — features a watermelon gremolata and fresh figs, grapes, and cherries with honey. Thank you, chef Leah Branch, mixologist Eli Dwyer, and server extraordinaire Tegan P., for an unforgettable experience!

Excellent atmosphere. Hadn’t been in that area since pre covid. The whole thing was great. Oysters, legs and eggs, and cornbread with maple butter to start. I had the cabbage dish, my patnah had the roasted chicken. Loved both. Peanut butter cup for dessert 😋. Drinks were delicious and fun. Sanguine Moon with Belle isle blood orange was awesome. The mezcal smoke screen drink was gorgeous, tart, savory, rich. Gonna go back after their renovations are completed. Very excited to do so. 😊

Really good food. Too pricey though the upscale style is nice. For such an experience the restaurant was extremely loud. Everyone was yelling over eachother to have conversations. The entrance and exit situation of people standing around in the way of customers leaving needs to changed. The exit needs to be opposite the entrance.

A nice casual-fancy quaint restaurant with incredible staff.

I ate here for the first time and am very pleased. Our server was truly perfect, made great recommendations when asked, came by the table the right amount at the right times, and was generally very prompt and friendly.

They also treated us well as we had a birthday, bringing a dessert out with a candle that matched the person’s dress. (I only hope it was intentional)

The plating was beautiful and the food tasted great, I recommend the scallops. The only reason I give it four stars is due to the two appetizers that we got. They weren’t bad by any stretch, but were very, very average. I would give 4.5 stars, if I could.

Perfect date night restaurant. Located in Richmond’s historic Church Hill this unassuming little restaurant delivers on atmosphere, food and drinks. It is a small space so I recommend reservations. Food was delicious. We shared the cornbread appetizer and then got gumbo and steak. Everything we are was cooked perfectly. The menu changes fairly regularly so we are looking forward to returning to try new options. The cocktail menu is well curated with fun options for a special night out. I moved here from Cali and love trying new places!! To be honest it was a cute scenery and the wings were hellaaa good but I also got the salad and yes it was good – loved the dressing, but it was very soggy. My boyfriend got the scallops and he liked it but whatever the green sauce it was tasted old like moldy. The water was immaculate.

Took my girlfriend to The Roosevelt for her birthday this past week, and to say the least we were FLOORED. If I could give them 6/5 stars I would!

Everything was fantastic and flawless, and the service was attentive but not overbearing. They even offered to pay for her desert for her birthday despite the year they’ve had with COVID.

If you’re looking for excellent food, excellent service and a cozy atmosphere in the heart of historic Church Hill this is your place. We’re so happy we chose The Roosevelt for her birthday and we will absolutely be returning.

The setting is absolutely perfect, from the lighting, to the decor, and topped with a beautiful fully stocked bar. Each dish we tried was just as delicious as the next. Do not skimp on the apps! We tried (and highly recommend) the Crispy Lamb Belly, Fried Oysters, and Pork Rinds with Pimento. For Entrees, we decided on Rockfish, Bistro Steak and Braised Pork Shoulder, all of which were absolutely amazing! The Chef gave us a special treat, sending out the table a sampler of the three desserts that were featured on the menu that evening. I, for one, being a Crème Brûlée aficionado, found the Hibiscus Crème Brûlée absolutely delightful. Ultimately, the decision was made that ‘Drumstick Dreamin’ (a chocolate a peanut butter desert) was the group favorite.

  124. Brian Williams 2021/08

The sum of the experience: mediocre.

Perhaps the staff was “off” during our visit, but I was underwhelmed about every part of the experience. There were only 2 servers for the whole restaurant and it showed. Took a long time to put our order in, and an equally long time for the food to come out.

The small plates were probably the best part of the meal, the large plates were ok. The chicken was plenty flavorful, but the steak was overcooked and pretty fatty. The mushrooms were way too salty.

The dessert (peanut butter cup) was just ok.

I’ll give points back for the staff comping part of our meal when we shared our feedback, but overall, definitely disappointed with the experience and honestly wouldn’t go back.

Tonight was my second time going to The Roosevelt and I have to say it’s my new favorite restaurant. We did not have reservations but were able to find seats at the bar. Our bartender was Zach and the other bartender was Jackie. Both of them are ABSOLUTELY fantastic. Personable, attentive, and knowledgeable. I can’t say enough good things about both of them. On top of the amazing service the food is amazing. We only got appetizer but every appetizer we got was phenomenal. We got adventurous per the recommendation of Zach and tried the frog legs. So so good. The atmosphere in this place is great. The food is excellent and the service is top notch. My husband said it’s his new favorite place and wished we lived closer. I’m only thankful we don’t because I’d be broke eventually lol. But y’all…you need to go here!

The restaurant is so cute. You may need to drive a bit to find street parking. The entrance is wheelchair accessible with a ramp. The small dining room gives this restaurant and intimate vibe. We tried the half roast chicken, seared halibut, cornbread, and wine. All were delicious. The potatoes were similar across the two entrees. The portions were appropriate with no leftovers. Service was fairly efficient. Servers wore masks. They also had a cute bar for those who want a bar setting.

What a lovely dining experience! The menu may be small, but the imaginative and delicious preparations were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

What a chef! Never thought I would see such creativity expressed in simple zucchini pancakes, but the flavors were solid. Our mains were also equally great and we found a really wonderful Virginia Chardonnay. Service was as good as the food. Prices were reasonable and the vibe was relaxed.

This meal was delicious from start to finish. We ordered many of the small plates and honestly found it difficult to determine a favorite. The unique, explosive flavor combinations were very impressive. Our service was great and the cocktails weren’t too bad either.

I can’t say enough good things about this place!

The vibe here is incredible. The old timey feeling of the place makes you feel at home. Service here was also amazing. Eli was like an old friend, and had a lot of spot on recommendations.

I had the steak, medium. It was cooked perfectly. Honestly, when I got the dish I thought it was a piece of art. And it tasted delectable. I was very impressed with their chimichurri, and the sweet potatoes were very well seasoned.

For drinks, I had a Danville Rattlesnake. Whoever invented that drink deserves a Nobel prize and Eli made it perfectly. It was strong and sweet and sour and exactly what I needed. The wine here was also very good.

Overall I would highly recommend and would go back.

  145. Jessica P 2021/02

First time here. Nice atmosphere and kind servers. Short but interesting menu. Service was very slow but I think the covid restrictions had an effect on this aspect.

The three of us were all impressed with the flavors of our dinners. However the salt was pretty heavy on everything. This was unfortunate as it wasn’t necessary because they really did nail the flavors without it.

We had a little laugh when the shared dessert was also salty.

Overall a good experience and we will probably return. Just thought that it appeared to be a newer place and if they read the reviews I can only assume they see the heavy salt mentioned frequently. If not then it was a fluke and we look forward to a return without that part.

Charming spot in old Church Hill. Sophisticated, hip, and authentic southern charm. The food was outstanding. Bright flavors, contrasting textures and useful complements of garnishing with the main entrees. We really loved the scallops. Very highly recommend stopping by for dinner if you’re around downtown Richmond.

Our dining experience at The Roosevelt with Troy was incredible. We took all of his recommendations and ended up with the beet salad, chicken, pork, and rattlesnake cocktail. Our dishes were phenomenal. The Roosevelt was the best meal that we had eaten in the entire east coast. The decor was wonderful. We will be back.

  151. CJ Crane 2020/11

We were spending the night in Richmond and happened upon The Roosevelt. What a fortunate find. The atmosphere is very cool, old hardwood floors, tin ceilings, very high. The service was top notch and the food was even better. My wife had the chicken fried portobello mushroom and I had the pan roasted scallops…we shared the roasted beet salad for an appetizer and the peanut butter pie for dessert. We started the night with drinks and liked mine well enough to ask for a recipe which the bartender came over and shared. Turned out to way too involved to make at home but man it was good. We will eat here again in an instant, next time we are in Richmond!

I am updating my initial review. I was immediately contacted by The Roosevelt after I posted the prior review and they sincerely apologized and made amends. I will be going back and this restaurant remains one of the best in Richmond.

  174. Natalie Cheney 2020/03

We did the prix-fixe brunch (menu was different than on website) with the added mimosas for $22. This gets you a carafe of OJ, glasses, and a bottle of bubbly. The prix-fixe includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The pacing of everything was perfect. My friend had the Beignets de crevettes (3)-Rock shrimp savory beignet, guacamole, lime.

  175. Katie Schwienteck 2020/02

Should have gone else where for a burger, over priced and fries were soggy and cold.

  176. Shante Davis 2020/02

Food was good a little expensive for what you get. Staff was the best I’ve ever experienced in awhile. Visiting from Atlanta, GA.

  177. Jess Lauher 2020/02

Special Valentine’s Day menu. Every single bite was amazing from the lamb tartar to the scallops to the chocolate cake. Best scallops I’ve had in years! Must go!

  178. Steven Curry 2020/02

Best cocktails in town. Food is always amazing. Muscles is a must have dish. I wish the kept the red sauce muscles on the menu year round but they do seasonal sauces it looks like. But beautiful little resturant and bar. Recommend to anyone whi hasnt tried. Smaller menu but big flavor and presentation. Great work to front and back of the house.

  179. Rev. Ted Smith 2020/02

Some things really good, & some things not so good.
    * really good reservation system;
    * great staff, very attentive;
    * Great, tender, flavorful scallop; but only 3 or 4 on an over abundance of slightly under cooked black eye peas;
    * Great fries & really good corn bread;
    * a generous portion pork loin, but brought out very rare when ordered medium well;
    * a nice size spice cake but too heavy on the slice;
A really tough call on whether I’d try again.

  180. Joel Burton 2020/02

Excellent service, cozy atmosphere, awesome people. The food is full of uniquely paired flavors. A must try for date night!

$14 for a double cheeseburger, after the city of Richmond gouges you in taxes and you leave a tip you have just paid close to $20 for something you could have gotten from McDonalds for $2. I will not be back, I would not recommend the Roosevelt.

  182. Barb Nelson 2019/12

Food was undercooked, sent back and still raw hamburger, UGH!

  183. James Thomas 2019/12

Outstanding meal. A little disappointed they were out of mussels at 5:30 on a Friday

  184. Jessica Crespo 2019/12

I tried calling as I wanted to do take out but had a few questions. I was put on hold. I waited 15 minutes before finally hanging up. I tried to call again twice and it went straight to their automated message. I will never give my business to them again. Terrible customer service.

  185. Patrick Muller 2019/12

If we knew how good this place was we would’ve eaten here twice. Due to Covid-19 they only had about 6 tables in the dining room, which we thought was a great idea. Contactless menus and all staff wearing masks. Our server was also the mixologist and recommended some choices for cocktails. Drinks were exceptional and we ordered two rounds. The appetizers were spot on and included the corn bread and fried green tomatoes. Both were perfect segue ways to our entrees. While all of the entrees looked great we went with the halibut and double cheeseburger. Burger meat super tender and juicy. Cooked perfectly. Shoestring fries. Soft sesame seed bun. Bacon jam was a nice addition as well. Excellent. The fish cooked perfectly over cabbage and country ham, sweet potatoes, kale and creme fraiche. A lot of flavors that heightened the Halibut. Ended the meal with the oatmeal cookie which was a nice sharable sweet to conclude the night. Highly recommend when visiting RVA.

  188. Emily O'Hare 2019/11

Great food, good service. The restaurant did get very loud when it got more crowded.

  189. john warrick 2019/11

Love the atmosphere of this casual dinning room. The cocktail program is first class. The menu offers something for everyone in an upscale VA farm to table concept. The wings with Alabama sauce and the roasted cauliflower were great starters. I had the pork loin special, tasted the scallops, and the steak – all were fantastic. Dessets were great too. Lastly the service was friendly, attentive, and helpful with wine pairing.

  190. anne joseph 2019/11

Great cocktails. Nice service. My husband liked his burger but the fries were just average. My main problem was the vegetarian option. The roast zucchini was still hard and the accompanying onion-tomato relish was unbelievably acidic and salty. Whoever designed that dish never tasted it before putting it on the menu. I don’t usually give bad reviews, but this is a warning to all non-meat eaters to stay away.

  191. Nick Heymann 2019/10

Food was flat-out amazing. Southern classics with some creativity. Atmosphere was dark and laid back in a historic space. Service was over-the-top. HIGHLY recommend.

  192. Megan Rickman Blackwood 2019/10

I started by ordering my regular drink. Its kind of complicated and if they get that right it’s a good sign. Somehow, they managed to bring out a flavor profile on the Appleton i had never imagined and it was good! The place was packed on a Friday so i take back all my doubting of my husband for getting a reservation. GET A RESERVATION. It’s a small venue and word is out about how good everything is. Appetizers are interesting combinations, we shared the oysters and they were fried to perfection. Next was entrees and the fact that hanger steak was even an option already had me excited. My only complaint with the steak was that someone had definitely seared it just a smidge too long. The outside had a bit more crisp than i would have wanted but the inside melted in my mouth. Overall really great experience with great staff and a chef not afraid to take Richmonders to a higher level of cuisine. We will certainly be back.

  195. Jean M 2019/10

Very relaxed and cozy atmosphere to meet up with friends at the bar. Buttermilk Fried Oysters and cornbread were great to share for two. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

  196. Shyam Kandoi 2019/10

The cocktails are awesome, the presentation for the drinks are awesome. The menu had limited option and didn’t cover all the bases. My previous visits to the Roosevelt where amazing. The current menu basically boiled down to
    1. Fish with red meat
    2. One Veg option
    3. Remaining items on menu where red meat

I believed it lacked options on white meat and just simple fish.

The Roosevelt keeps on changing there menu which is great but current menu was is a disappointment. It’s a must go place and I would advice to check there menu before you head there.

  197. Isaac Brown 2019/09

The food was excellent and the cocktails adventurous and delicious. My wife’s non-alcoholic cocktail was sophisticated and made to pair with mine while not just being mine sans alcohol.

I had a great experience here on my visit. The interior is very nice and they have a good bar. We had the fried oysters as an appetizer and they were some of the best fried oysters I have had. Really enjoyed those. Wife got the Pork Chop and I got the Hanger Steak. Both were great and the steak was cooked to what I ordered. Loved the sauce and what came with it. Menu is limited but it does rotate and they also have specials to offer including a drink. Service was good too.

My first exposure to The Roosevelt was a quick phone call to make sure they had bar seating. My call was answered by a charming lady who not only assured me they do, but that I could get a full dinner menu. She even confirmed my arrival time to make sure I could be seated when I arrived. The drive from my hotel was somewhat I retesting because the neighborhoods I had to drive through were somewhat sketchy, but where the place is located is actually a very nice neighborhood going through a rebirth, with lots of young professionals, although the only parking available is on-street, but not metered. When I went into the beautifully restored building I was met by the woman with whom I spoke, and she greeted me by name. I grabbed a seat at the bar after she introduced me to the bartender, Jesse. The bar was extremely well-stocked with top shelf and local liquors and wines, but only three craft beers and one cider. Their mixing ingredients are all fresh, locally-prepared and extensive. Herbs for muddling are in a planter on the bar along with an entire collection of various shrubs and fruits which Jesse regularly utilized in the creation of a number of high-end signature cocktails. And even as busy as he was, he still made time to chat with me about music, drinks, and whatever. The menu was diverse and matched the online version, so I was able to order based on what I had seen online. The harder part was selecting a wine from the extensive menu. I ordered the seared scallops, which were excellent, although for the price, I would’ve hoped for a larger portion. Since I was still hungry, I went back for dessert, an excellent little dish of absolutely decadent chocolate mousse. Overall, an excellent meal in great surroundings hosted by great people.

High end place. Very good. I had the hanger steak and a side of grits. Very well prepared and presented.

  226. Rick Jones 2019/04

The cocktail is delicious. Expectations rise of the meal to come. The short ribs arrive, and you realize the expectations are unwarranted. The dish looks attractive, the ingredients are well-placed, the temperature is right yet the beef itself is overcooked and obviously so – mealy – a misuse of the good ingredients – no one bothered to ask. At this point you realize there’s no point in posting a review at all because the restaurant’s best days are behind them, and they now trade on reputation. My guests exclaimed their appreciation, but I wonder if it’s genuine.

  227. John Bosworth 2019/04

The cocktails are interesting. They have one with miso in it. It’s funky, it’s smokey, but it’s actually delicious. The pork chop is where it’s at. Such a great flavor. The grits that came with it were amazing as well. The service is good. It was kind of busy when we got there so we did wait a little. It is a little expensive with most cocktails costing $12+. By the looks of their menu, they change it every season. I’d like to the the different menu items when the seasons change.

  228. Manuel Redoble 2019/04

    Amazing burger!

  229. Neil Robinson 2019/04

Where to start with the compliments? The menu – stellar, the cocktails – standout, the service – charming, the atmosphere – relaxed and local! Oh, and then there’s chicken wings (if you’re lucky enough to find them on the appetizer menu) – the chicken wings are kinda the best damn wings I’ve ever savored. I managed to leave for San Francisco with a pint of their secret rub but don’t pass up the chance to taste the original if you’re in the neighborhood!

Never disappoints!! Stellar meal as usual. Although I was unable to substitute the chicken livers with the beef tongue (they were out of beef tongue) the Jewish Sailor was probably the best sandwich I’ve had in a very long time…although I did substitute the rye for a sub roll. Even better were the crispy brussel sprouts!!! Best EVER!! Even if you don’t like brussel sprouts, these are amazing!!

I went here for the first time recently. We had tickets to see Jackson Browne and wanted to go out to eat prior to the show, and we thought this would be the place to go. The Service was a little off with our primary server, but the secondary server more than picked up the slack. The cocktails were nicely prepared, Tom Collins, frothy, made with egg whites, so good, and so was the Seersucker. The IPA Selections were good, and I had a Sour-IPA, first time for everything, and it was outstanding. The foods and appetizers were nicely prepared, and so were the desserts. I’m glad we visited.

Delicious food and great service. Also, the cocktails were incredibly tasty. I liked that there was a nice space in between getting our appetizer and entrees. Some restaurants tend to rush and bring out entrees before you’ve even finished with the app; but The Roosevelt staff were all very attentive and the pacing of the meal was perfect. Perfect place for a nice night out when you want to enjoy your meal and company and not feel rushed.

  252. Dusty Boyd 2018/12

Very good. Attentive waite staff. Great cocktail selections. Entrees interesting and savory.

  254. Darius Reinikovas 2018/12

Great upscale restaurant in Church Hill

  255. Jonathan Murdoch-Kitt 2018/12

Great Neighborhood Restaurant. It has an active bar scene, and wonderful entrees. However, their seasonal menu is often very limited in selection.

  256. Kevin Rudnick 2018/12

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the RVA. Chef Gregory has a true understanding of southern cuisine and blends it perfectly with his modern take on cuisine. Everything on the menu is there for a reason and its all delicious. From the most expensive entree to the chicken wings… You will pay a fair price for a fantastic meal.

  257. Jacob Wesson 2018/12

Great atmosphere, good service, awesome cocktails, and most of the food was delicious. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Cornbread was dry, but everything else was delicious. We had the wings with white sauce to start, and I had the daily special: lamb chop and a kale salad. Lamb chop was seasoned perfectly, and the fatty part of the chop melts in your mouth. Kale salad was refreshing, and way better than the salads I make myself. Great place eat if you’re in the area.

  259. Ben Ford 2018/11

Rock fish, scallops and cocktails were wonderful!

  260. robyn young 2018/11

Great place to dine. Award-winning cocktails. Park on the street.

  265. Brennen Keene 2018/10

Excellent food, excellent drinks and wonderful service. The Roosevelt is a RVA gem.

  266. Kostadin Kushlev 2018/10

Some of the best cocktails RVA has to offer, alongside a classic, romantic atmosphere and delicious food. Not cheap, but excellent! Book as it gets busy!

  267. David Kellner 2018/10

    Delicious

  268. Nancy Jones 2018/10

great food and service. just wished there was more to the portions because it was delish!!!!!!

  269. Wei Styer (Wu) 2018/10

My husband surprised me with dinner at the Roosevelt for my birthday and it was absolutely lovely! Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh tasting, and the service was wonderful. The restaurant was much smaller than I expected, but the tables are well spaced and the high ceilings makes it feel very roomy and open, so you don’t feel crowded. Highly highly recommend trying.

  270. Jerry Molstad 2018/09

Very noisy inside. Music loud and tall ceilings make it hard to hear.

  271. Dennis Fletcher 2018/09

Great experience, food was superb and delicious. Service was great.

  272. Karen Weinberger 2018/09

Not much on atmosphere, and the decibel level is high, but the food is wonderful and the staff super friendly and attentive. Parking is on the street so that can be a little tricky
Definj9should reserve if you are going on a weekend night

  273. Garreth Blackwell 2018/09

Consistently, some of the best bartenders in the city. The gluten free fried chicken is fantastic, but goes quickly. Four stars because I have (as well as have some of my friends) had less than positive experiences with the service staff when bringing our children to the restaurant.

  274. Neil Spoonhower 2018/09

If you’ve read any of my reviews you’d know that for fine dining I am super stingy with 5 stars but at the Roosevelt I freely award all five.

The bar tenders are mixologists and cafe about their craft. The servers are there to give you a great experience. And all that is nothing compared to the food.

Our dinner tonight was exceptional. We started with three apps…wings and homemade pork rinds. How excited could you get about that? For the Roosevelt’s wings and pork rinds you can get VERY excited. The smoked wings are drop dead amazing. The pimento cheese with the pork rinds was superb.

I had one if the best fish dishes ever it was incredible. So flavorful and everything done to perfection.

  277. Christy 2018/09

Over-priced signature cocktails that were barely palatable. Didn’t bother with the food.

  278. Sandra Trapp 2018/08

Excellent craft cocktails and great food and service! Will be back soon.

  279. Lauren Ann 2018/08

This is a great spot because the menu changes frequently but they keep their staples. Great cocktail list. I love their mussels; you get a large portion for a great price. I would recommend making a reservation during their busy hours or on the weekend. It’s kind of a small space so tables fill up fast.

  280. Brian Jamieson, MD 2018/08

Cocktails are well done, food was quite good if a tad overpriced.

  281. Pete Price 2018/08

My favorite restaurant in the city. Laid back place with a top notch cocktail list, and the best food. Been 15+ times and each time there is something new and wonderful to discover.

  282. Joe Mahaffey 2018/08

In my opinion, this place is serving the best wings in Richmond. The bar is fantastic. I’ve never eaten anything here that wasn’t (at the very least) cool to try. Plan in advance to eat here, they have seats for less than 50 people. I go back every time I can.

  283. Trace Woodbury 2018/07

    One of richmond’s finest restaurants

  284. mercy robertson 2018/07

Has wonderful food plus have excellent gluten free choices! On Tuesdays, they have gluten free fried chicken that anyone would love!

  285. Tia 2018/07

The menu here changes often and everything I tried at this place has turned out to be amazingly different and delicious. The drinks menu changes often too but I think the bar tenders play with their recipies too much and getting a good drink is a hit or miss. Personally, I found all four different drinks that I tried in one night very sweet.

  286. Corson Witham 2018/07

Recommend the crostini, corn bread and roasted vegetable risotto. The drink selection is good but a little pricey. Would recommend making a reservation and it tends to get busy close to the weekends. I visited this restaurant 3 times in the one week I was in Richmond.

Lovely remodeled restaurant that maintained old decor. Friendly staff, vibrant atmosphere. I am new to the area and the neighborhood looked sketchy a few blocks away and I would advise guests to stay cautious.

The price for the drinks seems steep but it is definitely worth it. Easily top 5 for cocktails in town. Be sure to get there early on Tuesday for $10 fried chicken, not available any other time.

    Worth the trip across town.

  301. Sean Lowry 2018/04

Food was pretty good. Goat cheese grits could be saltier and cheesier (plz use Anson Mills). The steak and mashed with homemade A1 was fantastic. Food service was a little slow though- some big time gaps between initial drinks, and apps/entrees.

  302. Douglas Fuchs 2018/04

We went for restaurant week and were fairly disappointed. The mussels were not cooked very well. The pound cake was one of the items we were looking forward to most from photos online, but when they arrived at our table it didn’t look at all like the pictures. The two cakes we’re very different in size and they had run out of their fall flavored whipped cream. The entree was delicious, but also missing a couple ingredients.

I know it was restaurant week so the Roosevelt was trying to pump as many people through as possible. However, if we had a complete and tasty meal, we would have come back. We will not be coming back.

  310. Maggie Johnson 2018/03

Service was middling at best. Mussels were bland, gumbo even blander. Flounder special was quite good, although the cheese grits were cold and the coleslaw was warm.
All in all, this place is way overrated.

  311. Sam Jones 2018/03

Without question my favorite restaurant in town. BUT when I took my parents there for brunch on New Year’s Eve (after talking the restaurant up all week) the service was disappointing. Once seated they forgot to give us menus. They sat the table next to us and immediately gave them menus. We had to flag someone down after several minutes. They only refilled our coffee once and only after I had to get up and ask someone to come refill them. After the table next to us, who came in after us, was almost done with their breakfast, our server came over and asked what we ordered again, then it took another fifteen minutes or so to get our food. I was a little embarrassed after talking this place up so much. But the food was great, as usual. I gave five stars because they are typically five star quality (so good), but their brunch service was two stars that day. Hopefully they will address their service issues (and put the poutine back on the menu!).

  312. Michael Boyd 2018/03

Great food in a non-pretentious setting. The dishes at the Roosevelt are always presented beautifully and taste delicious. The service is terrific with creative mixology offerings at the bar. I have never been disappointed at the Rtoosevelt.

  316. Mary Young Chinn Tracy 2018/03

I don’t want to give The Roosevelt any stars but that was the only way I could get into the page to rate it. There were ten of us from our garden club with reservations for 7:30 PM on September 25. We arrived about five minutes early so our table was not ready. That was okay but we had to wait outside. Finally someone in our party went into the restaurant to check on our table at 7:50 and it was ready. No one bothered to come out and tell us that our table was ready. That was the beginning of a VERY LONG EVENING. This was not due to our party being slow choosing from the designated menu but the restaurant completely ignoring us. We finally had the waitress take drink orders and we had to choose from a limited menu because the size of our party. The price of the dinner was pre decided by the Roosevelt ($35 plus 20% tip). The 20% was fine which we all are use to for parties of 6 or more. Our orders were finally taken and we waited for our meals for at least an hour and a half. All evening we watched tables being served, eating and leaving and we sat there waiting. No one ever came to the table to explain the delay. Finally a member of our party asked TWICE if there was a problem and the answer was that they were busy. We finally finished our meal and carried our desert with us because it was now after 10 PM.

Food was just okay but you can bet this group of ten will NEVER return.

Dim lighting created such a romantic setting at 9pm. Our server knew all the dishes and since we were not very hungry, recommended brussel sprouts with white anchovies and buretta cream. OMG, it was so unbelievably good we wished we’d ordered another one before the kitchen closed. We ordered vodka with cranberry juice & ginger ale. Vodka & ginger ale brewed in house. You have to try the appetizer & drinks. They let us stay even after the official closing time, just like your neighborhood bar might, except they have world class food, service & drinks. I will make it my neighborhood bar, seeing as it’s so close to my home.

The Roosevelt serves the most consistently delicious high end food in Richmond. Our group of seven all orders different stuff and from drinks to appetizers to main course to dessert it was all completely without any fault and delicious. So many places get a few things right and miss on a few. Not the Roosevelt. Straight A’s Everytime. Prices are more than fair for the quality of product and service you get.

  338. Robin Pernice 2017/10

Outstanding. The food is imaginative with very smart combinations. Extremely well executed with attention to detail. We eat here every time we come to Richmond. Every choice has been a winner. Can’t praise them enough. Service is friendly and efficient.

Amazing food, well designed specialty cocktails, fantastic service from knowledgeable staff. Great atmosphere. We will absolutely return.

  362. Rochelle Fisher 2017/05

The Roosevelt in Church Hill is always amazing. What I love: 1) brunch menu and coffee 2) cocktails (the best margarita of my life!). Their (ever-changing) dinner menu is also great, but I consistently dream about their pancakes and bloody mary’s.

The atmosphere is dark, yet warm. The staff are friendly, but not overly doting or intrusive. I highly recommend this for date nights, birthday dinners, or just because you are in the mood for an amazing meal. I would describe it as new American and trendy (think bourbon, books, and maps). It is a standout spot in RVA for me.

  363. Dan Potter 2017/04

I was very excited to eat at this restaurant for my birthday dinner. We drove to Richmond to eat at The Roosevelt, in particular. Upon arrival, the manner in which we were “greeted” completely turned us off. So much so that we refused to bring this place the profit of a large dinner party. We cancelled our reservation, turned around and left. We’d rather spend an hour waiting to eat where we felt we’d receive great service. The food at The Croaker Spot along with the service was AMAZING!

RVA’s #1 foodie spot. Great food great bar. Make a reservation if you can! Worth the wait otherwise.

    Very delicious southern style cooking.

Outstanding creations! Have been here for brunch, cocktails, and dinner – and have had a memorable experience each time; each time I left thinking about when I’d be back.

Enjoyed the wonderful Sunday brunch. Exceptional service and great atmosphere with the feel of a great niche neighborhood find.

    Quality food, interesting cocktails.

We just had the greatest food and accommodating service at our son’s wedding and reception. Everything was exceptionally high quality. Tickled!

  401. Joe Anderson 2016/02

Great atmosphere. The steak was perfectly cooked and the cornbread is great.

  402. Chris Fillmore 2016/02

Great brunch and drinks. Can’t go wrong with a spic you bloody Mary and hash. Drinks are some of the best in the city. Almost always a wait buto worth it, I recommend sitting at the bar.

Nice and small atmosphere, tasty food, attentive service. Liked hummus, scallops, soft shelled crabs; cornbread was meh. Entrees $16 to $24. New menu every few weeks. Street parking.

Food, cocktails, and service was top notch.

  405. George Gitchel 2015/12

Outstanding cocktails, inventive and delicious food, and some of the friendliest bar staff in town. Absolutely one of my favorite places to eat and drink!

  406. CC Satterfield 2015/12

Love the food. Sometimes the noise level is too high.

  407. Alison Porpora 2015/12

Amazing experience. Everyone is so kind and attentive – delicious food! Great bar. What more do you want?

  408. Will Phillips 2015/11

Cocktails are excellent and the staff do great work. Love this place!

I have been to the Roosevelt a few times for brunch and dinner. I have always come away happy with my experience. The food can be a little offbeat sometimes, combining things that you would not expect, but that is part of the adventure at The Roosevelt. Just trust them, it will be good.

My only complaint would be maybe a small lapse in consistency. The last time I was there for brunch someone in my party got some very average, cold, sausage gravy and biscuits. I’m not sure if they would have been better if they had come out piping hot (probably) but that was an unfortunate and uncharacteristic negative experience.

Otherwise, this place is a great example of southern comfort food with a twist.

I got to say, I’m not sure about all the hype. There was nothing exactly wrong with this place. Sure there was some things on the menu that were out- but I expect that later into the night in a small restaurant. I thought the food was okay, as well as the service. Key word here being “okay.” So there’s no negatives here, just nothing to really make me go “wow, I can’t wait to go there again!” I’ve had much better experiences and food for the price.

Dined there with friends on a very busy night. The food is good but not outstanding–at least what I ordered. Good and friendly service. A problem for some may be the noise level which because of the ceiling height and composition makes conversation difficult, especially if you are a “senior” and have a bit of hearing loss. If I try it again, I’ll shoot for an early reservation before the crowd arrives.

GREAT, GREAT, and GREAT. Must try peanut butter pie!!!

Went for dinner Saturday night with friends and had, hands down, the best meal I have had in Richmond. The pimento cheese starter was delicious and the entrees were all wonderful, the pork shank especially so. The potato gnocchi and rock shrimp app was so good we ordered a second round before we even got to the main course! Do not miss the coconut cake and you can’t go wrong with any of the mixed drink offerings!!

Very disappointing experience. No less than 3 of our party of 7 found their food order marginal at best. The pork shoulder and scallops are items that I would stay away from. The skirt steak was ordered by 2 in our party and they both seemed satisfied. However, the biggest surprise was the attitude of our server. She basically took our order, delivered it and gave us the bill. There was no offer of entree descriptions or suggestions, pleasantries or even a smile. Congeniality seemed to be a foreign concept to this young lady. I commented to our party, “doesn’t she realize that her attitude and service affects her tip?” When the bill arrived, I realized why she didn’t seem to care as a 20% service charge was added to the total. I saw nowhere on the menu that this would be the case. Beware.

    Great food and drinks

  416. Brian O'Rear 2014/06

The best soup I have EVER had (and I am 49). The pork shoulder was surprisingly delicious.

The setting is comfortable and felt very “Richmond”; the waitstaff amazingly friendly and welcoming. Michael was our waiter, and he was helpful, pleasant, and charming. This was a phenomenal experience all around.

    Highly recommend!

Heard a lot about it but not that impressed. Oyster Chowder was extremely good and cocktails were interesting but otherwise food was ok to poor (scallops were bad). Have to try again to see what all the fuss is about because I don’t see it.

  418. Mitch Lee 2014/05

Killer brunch! The pancakes are amazing, the fries are great, the chicken sandwich looked delicious… I was very happy with the food here and would highly recommend it to anyone else. The service could definitely be improved, but we were also a large party and were probably a handful to deal with.

  419. Doug Lee 2014/04

Unique. Consistent. Great food. Great service. Great place to take out-of-town guests for a Richmond experience.

  420. Allison G. 2014/02

The menu is largely gluten-free (shhhh, don’t tell anyone) and completely delicious. I live in DC and keep trying to think of reasons to go to Richmond for the day so I have an excuse to eat here again. (Otherwise, I’m the crazy girl driving four to six hours roundtrip to eat dinner.) Very highly recommended!

  421. Jake Vogel 2013/03

Went here based off of the recommendation of a local. Couldn’t have been more impressed. Visited Richmond almost a dozen times over the past 4 years and the scallop dish with garlic sausage, toasted peanuts and a ramp salsa verde is the best dish I’ve had in RVA. Despite my strict rule of not eating at the same restaurant twice I will be breaking my own rule when I return in July. $30 price assumes one entrée and 2 drinks. Must try the foie gras pound cake with caramel ice cream.
