Loved it! Great music, nice layout of seating, nice central bar, outdoor patio seating if desired (facing traffic). Torrey was my server and he was excellent, attentive but not overbearing. Pleasant but conversant. The nachos served as an appetizer was enough to make a meal. The pork was so tender…not stringy or dry at all. I had half boxed to take home. The Sangiovese I ordered went well with the pork but not recommended with the pasta.

The Cassarecce pasta with shrimp was excellent. Not often a fan of a white sauce, this one had a delectable combination of fennel, chive, and pickled mustard seed. I asked for the trout roe to be left out.

Finally, dessert. How could I not order the Chocolate Bourbon Tiramisu? This was heaven (and a strong glucose exploder!). Thank you, Oliver, for the delicious dessert! By the time I left, I felt really good.

Plenty of parking in this strip shopping mall. Food is top notch. Service is top notch. (5-6 p.m. review)

We went for our anniversary and were looking forward to it but were let down and disappointed in our meal and the experience, especially for the price we paid. I had a great glass of wine and a salad, but the $30 plate of gnocchi with crab and roe didn’t have an ounce of flavor and the gnocchi was barely cooked (hard and rubbery). It might be good place for a beer and burger but I would not recommend one of the costly entrees.

I wish the entree was as good as the appetizers. The rolls was soft like butter rolls with a hint of pretzel taste. The honey butter was incredible. Nachos was good, the pork tasty. The pimento cheese with the pickled onions was delicious. Unfortunately the entrees we lacking in flavor. Duck was dry and chewy, the pasta had a watery sauce and just bland. The waiters were great.

I did not have a good experience here. We (two women) were seated directly in front of the kitchen door, so there was a ton of traffic. We ordered appetizers and two glasses of wine each, and the cost was $104!! The appetizers were very small and nothing special at all. When I asked about the happy hour $2 discount on each glass, I was told its only for the bar, not at the tables. Major disappointment!

Stopped by with a local friend while in Bon Air and was very impressed with both the service and the menu; sat at the bar with welcoming bartenders serving fantastic cocktails; light dinner of Summer salads & sandwiches, which were delicious; definitely a spot to return to again.

I had the roasted pork shoulder for dinner. While the pork was tender, there were some pieces that were way overcooked and not edible. I was somewhat disappointed in the entree. However, my brother had the dry aged bone-in ribeye that was fantastic. I guess it was a bad night for pork.

Listen friends, you will not regret eating here. I’ve ordered a couple of times now and it’s been consistently great. Tonight, I had the snakehead fish (I know; it’s not what you might think). It was superb. The white fish was perfectly seasoned right out of the pan or oven; it was so hot that it stay very warm until the last bite. Astonishing. The dish came with pickled red onions; also delicious. In addition, there were super tasty fingerling potatoes, and perfectly cooked spinach. The spinach was cooked but not soft of wilted. It was cold inside so I only ordered hot tea with honey, which–you guessed it, was excellent in taste and temperature. It stayed hot nearly until I completed my meal. Service is good. I really liked the hostess. She was very sweet and knowledgeable. I liked that she took an interest in making sure I had the best dinning experience. I should have gotten her name but, I just left about 10 minutes ago–so it’s the young lady on duty at the hostess station tonight 5/17/2023. The waitress was also good; she just seemed hurried and not as friendly as the hostess (she said something was going that kept her from my table as often as she would have liked. I thought the two times she came were sufficient because I reading and didn’t want many interruptions. The server’s vibe was ultra pleasant. I liked how he presented my plate along with a very kind genuine smile that made me feel at ease. I didn’t like the music, I don’t think it matches the food style or the ambience. Overall, I’d rate this restaurant a 9.6 out of 10.

Full disclosure, this review was based on restaurant week, not the normal menu. After this trip, I will not be reviewing their normal menu. Initial observations were good. The waiter let me substitute the dessert for the Cobb salad and the first course, the mussels were delicious. The entree, it feels silly to call it that, was like the flank of a flank steak. It was pre cut into bite sized pieces (don’t know why we got a steak knife). The entree was mostly fries as the steak was smaller than most filet mignon cuts (might have weighed 8oz if weighed with caramelized onions). Since both my unused knives were taken during the third course and I couldn’t get the waiters attention, I didn’t get to try the Cobb salad even though he offered to box it for me. I just wanted to leave at that point. Most hungry I’ve been after 120$ meal for two (the lemonade was the same price as a beer). Nothing super offensive about the experience, but leaves one with zero interest in ever returning. Also, one should not be able to call it gratuity if it’s mandatory. I know this is becoming more normal, but it’s not 35$ a meal. Build it into the price please.

Went back to Southbound for RVA restaurant week. Small venue has large bar seating and outdoor patio. Inside acoustics can be on the noisy side. Food is prepared fresh, and offerings are well prepared and presented. Cocktails are exceptional, even in a town where we have great mixologist. Mussels, catfish, salads, very good..they do put a spicy spin on may southern dishes and staples.

Probably the best meal we’ve had since moving to Richmond 9 years ago.

    Excellent atmosphere, drinks and food.

Only snag was that we were served food without plates or silverware – but as a former industry worker… I used to forget things all the time on busy nights, so i get it.

Will definitely be back and looking forward to future meals here.

I was just blown away by the place. The ambience is execellent! Service was absolutely efficient! The food phenomenal- being a vegetarian my expectations not high – was I wrong or what ! It was one of the best dinners I have had this holiday season , the Butternut squash masala was delicately seasoned, the rice colked to perfection and the combination was a heavenly marriage! The dessert carrot cake was just divine , it was not your regular run of the mill kind, it was so fabulously creative in taste!! Delicious!

The whole experience was flawless! Definitely will be going back again !!

Southbound is definitely unique. The menu is seasonal and creative but not enough options. My daughter and I had a hard time finding what we want for dinner. I am giving a four stars for the menu lack of selections, entrees are very expensive but not memorable. They do offer a good selection of wine and mix drinks. Service was great.

A solid American/Southern restaurant located in between the Bon Air and Stony Point neighborhoods. The bar has an excellent cocktail program, and often the nightly specials are really good. The fried oysters app is also very good when it is on the menu. Otherwise the majority of entrees are very good but perhaps a tad pricey.

Me and my sister went there for Valentine where they had a selective menu their choices were good but could have been better the the shrimp salad was delicious the crab cakes were a little burnt and pair with coleslaw and potato salad I have sensitive teeth so pairing cold and hot bothers me so I only ate the crab cakes the desert choices could have been better I didn’t like any of them but I chose the tiramisu I didn’t eat it. My sister had the lobster bisque she didn’t like the croutons it was too hard and she also got the salmon with brussel sprouts which was a little burnt she didn’t like the taste of it but the salmon was good she chose a chocolate dessert that she did not eat

Top notch all the way. Steak was cooked to perfection and I have never had mussels cooked properly at any restaurant until now. Most places over cook or to the point of almost over cooked. These were done but still soft on the inside. That chili sauce was the bomb! The criticism I would have would be the selection of mushroom for the steak dish. That type of mushroom is very chewy when cooked. But still the flavors on everything was superb. Don’t forget to try the brussel sprouts. The restaurant itself is simply decorated which is nice but the noise level is rather High.

Me and a friend came here over firebird gril and because latitude in stony point said they had a 2 he wait for 2 people lol. The ambiance is simple yet romantic (low lighting and smooth music) loved the Peninsula bar and yellow lights. We were glad to not have the server run to us as soon as we sat down because it allowed us time to look at the menu u and the drink options. I ordered the Faerie Blossom and my friend had the Speak no evil. Both delicious mine was refreshing and his was smooth like a Pina colada. Next I ordered the fried catfish and added a crab cake and he had the homemade rigatoni and added the burrata. Both were good; mine need seasoning (salt and pepper) but the hot butter sauce was a great sauce. His paired great together but the noodles were undercooked . We def recommend coming here and was very surprised it wasn’t packed.

Our server was one of the best we’ve ever had. I never got his name unfortunately, but thank you to the server with the mullet and glasses.

The curry cauliflower ‘steak’ and ahi tuna were perfect appetizers. For entrees, my boyfriend got the hangar steak and I got the mushroom pasta with a crabcake. The steak and crabcake were amazing but my bowl of mushroom pasta was really bland with some of the mushrooms in it still being a bit hard. It was great quality in-house made gemelli pasta but it seemed it was only tossed in a bit of olive oil and chili flakes without any other seasoning. I think a little bit of lemon or even just some salt could have made the pasta worth trying again. My boyfriend also got the tiramisu which had a brulee’d sugar topping instead of cocoa powder which he really enjoyed and I got a glass of rainwater madeira. We will definitely be back.

Such a disappointment at this place.

The service is slow, our waitress was so busy serving so many tables and it took about 20mins to get our drink that we only just order a bottle of wine. Didn’t get to order food until half an hour seated and she was nowhere to be found.

The food was really bland for all the dishes, I had smoked chicken wings they are large size but very very blend really have no smoky taste and not marinated enough to have any flavor in the meat. I tried the mussel also the same, good flavor but very bland. The main I ordered from the menu said it’s squid ink pasta. But it came out a different pasta, and I asked the waitress they didn’t know, took 10mins for them to went back to the kitchen and my food was also getting cold, came back saying kitchen ran out of squid ink but without telling them. Well I think that’s the problem, that I didn’t order this and could have ordered something else. It was already late and we have 5 people in the party everyone already started 10mins ago so I didn’t want to exchange to something else. They can’t just serve me whatever they have that doesn’t match the menu. Its ridiculous.

And with the slow service and the messed up order they still mandatory charge 20% gratuity. And we have 5 adults and 3 kids. If that’s automatically added they need to make sure they provide the service that meets this standard. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

The restaurant is located in an upscale strip mall. The food was delicious, and our server was good. However, I ordered a $30 duck breast entree and received a half of a duck breast. I thought maybe the kitchen had forgotten the other half, but turns out that was the actual portion they were serving. It was about 4 bites of duck. I was very disappointed and felt kind of ripped off. The only saving grace was that our server took great care of us and even discounted the meal. I think this will be the last time I dine here though.

Southern cooking. Well cooked great presentation. Just not what I enjoy. I had an omelet with ham, cheese and peas. Yes peas in an omelet.

This place is great! The brunch menu may be small, but it is excellent and stays updated – a sure sign of fresh ingredients and ideas coming from the kitchen. If you enjoy restaurants that place true emphasis on the kitchen, you’ll enjoy Southbound…

  64. Chris Dodson 2021/09

We went for brunch at my daughters special request. She loves dinner out at Southbound and we decided to try the brunch, which was great. She had the biscuits and gravy while I tried some fried catfish and grits. All excellent. Staff was attentive and friendly as per usual. Come on to Southbound and you will not be disappointed.

Great service and food. I love their little takeout market next door as well. Nice little outdoor dining space. Bloody Mary, chicken and waffles, omelette with a side salad pictured. Happy to have some good dining options south of the James/hugeonot.

Very disappointing. Scrambled eggs completely bland. Biscuit with sausage gravy and eggs was mostly biscuit and little gravy. It was accompanied by potatoes that were like rocks, overcooked and obviously kept sitting for a long time. Clearly not returning.

Had not been back to Southbound since before the pandemic and can heartily recommend it based on the food we had 9/10/21. The fried oysters and autumnal squash/broccolini salad were delightful and the main courses were superb: porchetta (with pea puree and side of stuffing) and half jerk chicken with pineapple. No room for dessert (though we did stop at Gelati Celeste across the courtyard) but the Rostov’s coffee was sublime.

  74. Micki Milhouse 2021/03

I had the crabcake sandwich with slaw and fries. My meal was just ok. I did not enjoy their shoestring fries.

My wife and I have finally returned a restaurant for onsite dining the first time in 15+ months. We could not have chosen a better restart to our dining experiences.

Southbound never has disappointed us and we were so glad to be back at one of our favorite spots. Right here in our neighborhood.

We shares the experience with some out of town guests and everyone had a wonderful time. Fantastic food, drinks and service and great company.

Thank you Southbound for your wonderful hospitality. And special thanks to Rachel for her awesome service.

    We highly recommend Southbound!

Good atmosphere, delicious food, a nice little local place, especially for a date night

  84. Russ Jones 2020/12

We just moved to the area and had heard good things about Southbound, so we went for Sunday brunch. It definitely a date night kinda place. A little upscale but not too pretentious. The food was better than most restaurants around. They got my order and another customers order mixed up. While it wasn’t what I ordered, what I got was really good. They comped it from my bill, but I finished what I got. It was so good. Great food, good service, nice atmosphere, and just a tad pricey. All in all a good spot. Give it a try.

  85. Karla Paulino 2020/11

Amazing restaurant that exceeded above the scale, our server JAY did an amazing job she had great recommendations and was very friendly, the chief NICK put great time into our dishes everything was cooked just perfect. This restaurant deserves the highest of ratings and is the perfect spot if you are looking to eat good. Them short ribs hit the spot!
Will be coming back for more soon.

  86. megan benson 2020/11

I ordered the Bolognese to go, it was definitely cross-contaminated with seafood flavor. I called to let the restaurant know and was mocked by the manager and chef, and was offered more to remedy the situation. Save your money for a local business that cares about their customer feedback.

  93. M W 2020/08

The food at this location is actually good, but the lack of service and professionalism is what gets Southbound a one star. They are overpriced for the portions they give. Service was very underwhelming as I had to wait an hour and a half to get my order. The staff are also unfriendly given that I always tip when I come here. Unfortunately, that will not be the case as I will no longer patronage this location.

  94. Jim Buffey 2020/07

We arrived at 10:30 with reservations. Here is the list of issues.

    1. They didn’t have any more sausage
    2. They didnt have any fruit
    3. They didnt have any tea
    4. They delivered the wrong food
    5. Our poached eggs were uncooked
    6. The food was overly salted
    7. Bacon was uncooked
    8. Pancakes has spinach in them
    9. 2 orders came with or without the correct sides/ommissions
    10. The worst part was when we said something to the manager, we got scolded for being incorrect.

    Lesson learned.

What a cool restaurant to go to! I was celebrating my younger cousin’s birthday here and all you order is 3 course meals that are offered from the menu. I ordered a whole chicken meal with vanilla homemade ice cream. So good! Not too bad for a first time!

  101. Warren Demurjian 2020/03

Inventive dishes, including delicious salads and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had (squash tart). Short entree menu covers the bases from beef, pork, fish, and duck to pasta and burgers. Throw in a neat atmosphere and a funky soundtrack to make Southbound our favorite restaurant in all of Virginia!

  102. Mark Schumaker 2020/02

Food is great and atmosphere is cozy. The happy hour burger and brew is by far the best burger and beer related deal in the area

  103. Curtis Reisinger 2019/12

Southbound is one of the very few small and thoughtful restaurants in the Midlothian area, or south of the river, really. It’s a soft-spoken place with mood lighting and small cups of water. Beautiful bar, and everybody has a seat with a view of their open kitchen.

The menu changes frequently and they take some chances with what they select. I’m a fan of Sichuan foods in general, so I was excited to see Dan Dan noodles on their menu. They put their own twist on it by selecting fusilli pasta as their noodle of choice.

Service is always great, you can very much tell it’s a place that cares about the food and treatment of customers.

  104. M BH 2019/12

I have dined here 5 times, simply because it is close to my house. Menu is nothing to get excited about, portions are extremely small and unless you order full entrees and drinks, the staff can be very rude and make you feel unwanted. My opinion has always been that this restaurant takes advantage of the fact that there are limited dining options in the area. My suggestion would be to drive a bit farther and go elsewhere.

  105. Dave Crowder 2019/11

A little pricey for what they give you

Have both dined and drunk here on several occasions. Food is always great – pimento cheese and nacho appetizers are excellent well beyond their humble origins. Drinks are well crafted but served up by a fairly inattentive bartender whose strong yet dated beard game seems to give him the confidence to act like a complete dbag. Southside used to be a foodie desert and this place was a gift. Times have changed, and availability of close and diverse options now will result in my passing on the attitude and frequenting some more chill sources of a good cocktail.

I had high hopes when my wife and I went into Southbound tonight. I have been there once before about 3 years ago and was not pleased then either. Tonight, I ordered the bacon pasta dish with the added cheese (which is new on the Spring menu). First, the big blop of cheese on top was cold. They took it back to warm it up, but it just didn’t taste that good. Second, I could not taste any bacon at all in the dish. I don’t think I ate 1/3 of the plate. I also ordered the Mac and cheese side dish. I love mac and cheese, but this one, not so much. The smokey cheese flavor was just not appealing. I felt like I was eating at Chopped – you know, where they take a basket of random ingredients and try to make something it of it? I guess I should have gone with my instinct and got the cheeseburger (hold the ”bacon jam,” whatever that is). My wife liked the potato gnocchi, and the service was excellent. We will not go back though. I spent $75 without drinks, and was highly disappointed.

I went there with my family recently to celebrate my birthday. I chose Southbound because it had an upscale menu, but also because it had a children’s menu. We were greeted and seated promptly upon entering. It was very crowded, but luckily we had reservations. Our waiter was very friendly and provided some recommendations. We ordered the fried oysters and nachos appetizers. The fried orders were just ok. Had a bit of a fish taste and not very well seasoned. The nachos were ok, nothing special. I ordered the sirloin, which was the most expensive item on the menu, so my expectations were high. What I received was a relatively small amount of food. I ordered my steak medium and it was chewy and not very tender. Also was not seasoned very well. The potatoes and greens were good. The catfish and shrimp pasta were pretty good. I was a little disappointed that to one offered to sing happy birthday or that they had any type of birthday dessert, as most places do. The dessert menu was underwhelming and I was not surprised when the waiter informed us they routinely lost business to the gelato store across the street. Overall, Southbound offers a relatively limited selection of food items at above average prices, which is fine, but none were particular great. I liked the location and atmosphere, but Southbound does not offer the taste nor the value that I seek.

  131. Bill Doran 2019/04

We and another couple went to dinner here a week ago. It was a Saturday evening. The weather was pleasant so we ate outside and inside seemed a little noisy. There are two things that tell you whether a restaurant is ok, good, or great. That’s the food and the service. Often the food will be great but handled by a waiter or waitress who talks too much, doesn’t know the menu, is poor at their job, or whatever. At Southbound both our waiter (can’t remember his name, as it John? Older guy been there 5 years) was phenomenal. He knew his stuff had a dry sense of humor and was on top of everything. Wasn’t the waiter that has to ask every time he does anything and disrupts conversation. Very pleased. Food was top notch. My favorite part of the menu was it’s brevity. Few choices that are all good is so much better than a giant menu that makes you wonder what is good!

  132. Kate Herr 2019/03

    Absolutely delicious, as always!

  133. Eddie Small 2019/03

It’s okay. Went during restaurant week. Nothing on the menu really stood out and portions felt a little small. I might go back for brunch

The food was simple and good (not great), the service was great and I really wanted to love this place… But at the end of the day, portions were tiny and it was very expensive/plain for what we got… We had a pimento cheese appetizer that consisted of five or six small tortilla chips with maybe a teaspoon each of cheese, which was good, but not better than anything you can get yourself at fresh market. My entrée was tortellini, fairly simple but good, not great, but four pieces each about the size of a tater tot…my daughter had mahi which was great, but again a cheap fish served over basic white beans and arugula….damage was $75 for one glass of wine, one tiny app and two tiny entrees (well, the fish came with a solid $.95 can of white beans 😉 Maybe we just ordered poorly…for half the price would be a 5-star app restaurant lol

  152. Whitney Robinson 2018/12

Edit: The owner was kind enough to take the time to reply, and it wasn’t the automated replies that you usually get so I appreciate that. However, it doesn’t change the experience we had, unfortunately.

Old: The one time we want to go eat brunch they are closed for a private event with a lot of screaming children running around outside in the vicinity. Quite disappointing as we were looking forward to it.

  163. Stevie White 2018/09

Southbound features tasteless, extremely overpriced food on a limited menu. This is easily one of the worst restraunts I have ever visited in my life.

I paid Southbound a visit with my mother since she really wanted to try their crab cakes. Much to our dismay, they had sold out earlier in the week. It was a Saturday night when we went and from the look of it, very busy. I cant help but feel they dropped rhe ball since they ran out of their most popular item before such a big night.

So instead of crab cakes, my mom got the “pork steak” which ended up being a dry, greasy piece of pork that had no flavor or sauce. It came with some dull lentils and flavorless rice. It also had a slimey ball of kale which sadly was the tastiest thing on her dish.

I faired a little better with the rock fish. The fish itself was OK. The sauce however was weird and either had no flavor or was sweet. It came on a very skimpy bed of couscous which was almost tasteless save the carrots and the 5 tiny pieces of potatoe.

Both of our meals were small and left us hungry. They suggested we get some kind of salad to tide us over. This thing was the worst salad I had ever had in my life. The dressing was basically a thin coating of Crisco and the rest of it was a bunch of bitter greens that looked like someone pulled out of a weed garden. The croutons had the texture of small pieces of cinder block. They were equally as hard as cinder block and you could not get a fork through them. And the best part was the croutons tasted horrible. You would find better croutons in a bag bought from the grocery store. I am not sure if this salad was supposed to be sophisticated or something else, but as I said it was garbage.

Anyways, the total bill came to 85 after the tip. We didn’t even get any drinks (save a Coke and a tea). The only positive was the waiter, who did a stellar job. The place was busy though and I could tell he was spread thin.

As I said, this was one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune of eating. I am definitely not coming back. I only recommend going here if you want to pay a lot of money for small portions of bad food .

  164. Wade Cameron 2018/09

We love Southbound! We’ve eaten here 3 times and the food and drinks have been awesome every time. The half chicken and hanger steak are favorites. During our last visit, they accommodated our request for a grilled cheese (our 4-year-old is a picky eater). It looked fine (maybe a little over-toasted but not torched). The server came by and said they weren’t happy with how it came out and compted us a different dinner for our daughter. Very generous!

This place has a great atmosphere and is convenient whether you are coming from Midlothian or Richmond. We highly recommend it!

I attended this restaurant with my sister and my daughter. I am normally very conscious of where I take my family since we have little ones and not all places are accepting. Immediately when I walked in I was concerned. Also, of all the times for my daughter to behave like the 2 years and 3 days old that she is, this was it. She was fussy and yelled out “no” when just sitting. In typical mom fashion I started to wrap things up. We asked for our check and were closing out our tab when a lady yelled across the restaurant (which is not very large) “be quiet”. It was not hard to identify who she was and my sister saw her when she yelled. I wanted to address her and politely inform her that if silence is what she desires, coming out in public was not in her best interest. My sister suggested otherwise and that we just leave. After the incident the waiters all attempted to be very kind, thanked us for coming, and waived us right out of the door. However, I have to wonder, if this were my family yelling across the restaurant at one of their posh customers would we have been addressed or asked to leave. I don’t believe we are the “type” of customers they value and we will not be returning to this establishment.

    **UPDATE**

I really appreciate the response from the owner. An apology is all the restaurant can provide and what I’d hoped for when I was there. I felt it was well heard when the lady yelled out but I understand the waiters were all working and it may not have been as glaring to them.

The absolute best restaurant in the southside and one of the top 5 in Richmond. Always great service and the food is amazing. One of the best burgers in the area.

I have heard nothing but good things about this restaurant so we were very excited to eat here. I will say that it has taken me over a month to write this review because we were so disheartened about our experience.
We were sat quickly and our server was attentive. The food and timeliness is where this place fell flat.
For our appetizer, we had the fish dip, which was something that I could have found in a grocery store as it lacked freshness – we are from the west coast of Florida where fish spread is everywhere so we were highly disappointed by the lack of freshness form this spread.
After the appetizer, we waited, and waited for about 30 more minutes until our dinner arrived (we ordered the appetizers and dinner at the same time) For dinner, we ordered the scallops, the mahi and the market fish. The fish was okay but nothing to write home about. Kudos to the chef on the mahi – this was be best item we had for the night. The scallops were absolutely horrible and were not cooked. The outside was completely burnt and the inside was almost raw. I question why the chef decided this was a plate that would leave the kitchen. I will be honest and say that I didn’t send this back due to the time it took for it to get to our table the first time. I was able to eat off the plates of my family – which they weren’t to keen on 🙂

Overall this was a lack-luster experience. I would like to recommend that you give more attention to the preparation of your food if you continue to charge so much. We will not return

Food is amazing. If you haven’t been here….. Go!

  179. Randal Watkins (The Herbs Place) 2018/04

Eat here often and the food and service is a delight.

My review is conflicting because elements of my dining experience were really marvelous concerning the FLAWLESS fried oysters with tahini sauce, and a few waiters who came to take care of my husband and I when we needed the help. When I recall the rest, however, it reminds me why I wanted to give this place a 2.

The place is WAY too loud when you get enough people inside, giving its open feel a bit of chaos. We chose to sit in the heat hoping it would lose some of its swelter, which it did. But then it was like we didn’t exist. Our server was apathetic and didn’t do as much as to even tell as the schedules. We had to listen to a different server tell his table and then beg him to give us a rundown as he was hastily trying to get away. Our server also couldn’t tell me what he loved about the food, and looked like he was disinterested with doing his job. For that matter, just about every server I met (except for one really wonderful man who happily cleaned up our table and connected with us at the end of our meal). Stress levels are obviously high here, and it seems that there needs to be a focus on the ambience and environment.

My food came kind of late, but it was hot and the texture of the chicken was right. It was just underseasoned. Really fresh and simple tastes. Just underwhelming.

My Breckenridge Stout, the Oysters, tempura broccoli, and my need for a date with my husband saved the date. Please do better Southbound by slowing down and paying attention to your customers.

I’ve had dinner here 6 times. The chef is so good, on more than one occasion I have ordered food I don’t normally care for and was very pleased. The decor is rustic, but elegant. The ambience relaxing. The bar meets expectations. I ate there this evening and am already anxious to return.

My only criticism is not uncommon in restaurants of this calibur. The menu is seasonal. Which sometimes means if you eat something incredible and don’t return quickly enough, it’s not there to eat again. C’est la vie.

  183. Geoffrey Thomas 2018/03

Live in Stratford Hills and need to patron this place more often. Galley, Ruang Tong Thai (usually takeout), and Southbound are my top three food destinations in the area. Drinks and cusine are outstanding. Brunch is also great and I usually opt for the Bon Air Beast with eggs over easy. Had a hanger steak breakfast bowl special that was so good a few visits back (please bring it back). AND THE COFFEE IS GOOD! Never had a bad experience here with service or food. And to the people complaining about a limited menu… Really? I guess you can go to Fridays or some other chain that has hundreds of frozen entrees to choose from. Only thing I will complain about is a $32 rockfish entree I ordered not too long ago. It was absolutely delicious but the rockfish portion was smaller than a cocktail napkin.

  184. Nathan Clark 2018/02

Go for the cocktails stay for the cocktails
Edit: the food is great too, but the cocktails really are amazing!

  185. Molly Kaufman 2018/02

The food is always excellent, and dependable. The service is wonderful. Great ambiance. We live the fact that it’s a family place as well as being a bit more upscale.

  186. Fred Wintrich 2018/02

Recently celebrated our anniversary with dinner at South Bound in the Bon Aire area of Richmond VA. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the service is crisp, efficient and attentive. For appetizers, we enjoyed the Oysters Rockefeller (a special) and the always available and tasty Pimento Cheese crackers (both outstanding!). Our entrees (duck breast and Mahi filet) were perfectly prepared, deliciously seasoned and beautifully presented. This neighborhood restaurant is a gem and highly recommended. It will not disappoint!

  187. Robert Moore 2018/02

Pros: Excellent service, very fresh ingredients, obvious attention to detail.

Cons: A little bit disorganized at the hostess stand, very limited menu of both food and beer, and the #1 con: maybe the whitest, blandest, desperately-in-need-of-a-seasoning food I’ve ever had in my life. Everything needed more seasoning, which was nowhere to be found. Only the freshness of the ingredients made it edible. It’s not “bad” food, it’s just country-club white “bad.” Every dish (we did 2 apps, 2 drinks, 2 entrees, and dessert) was characterized by inexplicable blandness, like the entire meal had been boiled.

TLDR: Lovely people, overpriced super boring food. Take your grandma. Don’t go on a date.

  188. Catherine Faulkner 2018/02

    Excellent!

  189. Cora-Semmes Bryce 2018/02

Delicious food friendly and courteous staff. Will return and bring friends

  190. Kelly Jones 2018/02

Ask for Mike… best server. Food is delicious. Fried catfish was lightly battered to perfection. Great location.

  191. Jenna MSW 2018/02

DON’T GO HERE FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY!! I was just there yesterday, made reservations and all that. My family told our waiter it was my birthday and he said: “oh happy birthday, we don’t sing or anything” okayyy i appreciate that I thought, but I still want a scope of silly ice cream or tiny something right?? Incorrect. Dessert menus came out and the waiter wanted me to pay for my own dessert on my birthday. I know I probably sound like a brat, however I wish someone warned me so I’m posting! I don’t know about y’all but I look forward to silly free things like that. SO DONT COME HERE FOR YOUR BIRTHDAYS BECAUSE YOU’LL FEEL VERY SMALL AND UNIMPORTANT. It’s simply too much money to not have a somewhat special evening.

  192. Richard Schellenberg 2018/01

    Burger was dry

  193. Denise Green 2018/01

Great atmosphere and delicious food!! Michael was an excellent server!!

  195. Ed Ellis 2018/01

Great meal and great service. Every time not just now. We love this place! My wife’s birthday and she picked Southbound.

  196. Brand Inlow 2018/01

South of the river delight! A casual upscale dining experience with local sourced foods, excellent cocktails and a pleasant staff. We went early but reservations are a good idea after 6 PM.

  197. Yvonne Wilkins 2017/12

My boyfriend and I went to this restuarant this evening. He did a search on new places and Sountbound was one of the results. It is very close to our house in the Bon Air area. It was small but decorated nicely. Lots of windows and an outdoor patio. It had an open kitchen so you could see everything being cooked. I had the pan seared trout W/risotto and the sorbet with a glass of water and he had the duck also with risotto, veggies, a glass of sangria and the ice cream sandwhich. Both were awesome. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly. The portion sizes were good also. The bill was $78. Not something I would do everyday but I feel like it was worth it. The only issue I had was I did not care for the sorbet. The server apologized and asked did I want to try something else, which I did not. He took the sorbet away and brought some homemade nutella ice cream back on house which I thought was very nice of him. I did like the ice cream.

  198. Lloyd Brucher 2017/12

    Creative menu great experience

  199. Isela Ramirez 2017/12

Drove into this shopping area and stumbled upon this place. Very friendly staff, relaxing decor and atmosphere…it feels out of place in this area but I highly recommend. Big selection of wines and delicious food. We had oysters, nachos, and pasta – and we cleaned our plates. Big servings.

  200. Ginger Allgeier 2017/11

Amazing food! Specials were on point! Loved it.

  201. Scott Mackay 2017/10

Easily one of my most favorite restaurants. I’ve never had a bad experience or even remotely close to one. The food is so good that I’ll try things out of my comfort zone. The cocktails are made just as meticulously.

  202. Frederick Fleming 2017/10

Amazing food, excellent service! Can’t ask for more! Breakfast about, Wow!

  203. John A Giglia 2017/07

Great food, great service, what more can you want?

  204. Pam Tripp 2017/07

We visited Friday night 11’17-17. Short wait ..seated and 10 minutes later they wanted us to move to the back to accomadate a larger Party. We did. I ask for Blue Moon Beer didn’t carry and didn’t have a comparable Beer. I ordered the Bread Starter Plate when set down at original Table took forever and when the Bread Arrived, not impressed 4 different kinds of awful. I ordered Hot Tea since I couldn’t get a beer and so did 2 other people in my PARTY, served in small pots and mine did not have a lid ?? Server said just put a plate over it, I did and it just stayed cold. 2 of us ordered the Special Pork with Spiral Pasta with Mushrooms. Waiting..waiting..1st plate arrived Cold..sent back. The Pork and Mushroom were so tough and way to much Salt in the dish and it had a very strong taste. Southbound is missing customer satisfaction, it seems the customer has to accomadate the Resturant not the other way around. What a disappointing experience.

  205. Dick Bishop 2017/06

    Great

  206. Joe Hatchel 2017/06

Top quality southern farm to table. Nothing but great things on the menu.

  207. Joel McCauley 2017/06

Mussels, wings and macaroni were amazing. Old fashioned and the Spanish fly were delicious.

  208. Hank R. 2017/05

Great, great food. Fresh, unique food combinations and they make a great Old Fashioned to boot.

  209. April M. 2017/05

Never disappointed! Great service and great food! Went for brunch today and discovered that they have the best Bloody Mary in Richmond! Made fresh every morning and we could tell. You’ve got to check this place out!

  210. Patrick S 2017/04

You will not be disappointed. Service was great, and love all the different types of food.

  211. Chelsea H 2017/04

Great service; really knowledgeable, personable, and attentive bartender–not overbearing, but helpful. Food was less than stellar. The “Smoked,” wings exemplified this: they tasted fried with a little liquid smoke in the sauce.

  212. Sandra Cox 2017/03

    Great signature drinks and appetizers!!

  213. debbie harp 2017/03

Food is amazing. Drinking are very innovative. Service, fair at best

  214. Glenn Thamas 2017/03

This place has been reviewed many time favorably in the newspaper, so I’ll just add my 2 cents that it is a fine local place with a great bar, and fun menu.

  215. velver bishop 2017/03

They finally got the catfish straightened out I will be a returning customer

  216. Susan Sowers 2017/02

My husband and I starred of with the butter bean hummus and crudités which were super fresh from the garden. We also tried the smoked trout dip with homemade pickles and pita, Delilsh! My husband got the seared scallops and veggies, all cooked perfectly.. our waiter was johnny and he was fantastic,

  217. d courtney Chapman 2017/02

Had brunch with another couple. Three of us ordered pouched eggs. One asked that his be cooked medium well. the waiter made no comment to that. All the eggs arrived with extremely under cooked whites. I asked to have mine cooked more The waiter said that is how the poached eggs are served her and they do not take requests to cook the differently. He suggested an egg over easy which I accepted and he brought back. Also, my wife’s dish was served cold.

  218. Joe Monaco 2017/01

Meal was excellent. Service was great.

  219. charle wintzer 2017/01

Food was great, but wait for food very long,

  220. Antonia FD 2016/12

We aren’t on the south side any more, Toto – this is a restaurant that feels like it belongs in the city (and I mean that as a compliment)

  221. Tim P. 2016/12

Great food, great service, interesting flavor combinations. Ask for John for the great service, he never lets us down.

  222. Catherine Harold 2016/12

Great food and service. But, don’t get anything for breakfast that requires maple syrup. We were surprised that a high end restaurant would not serve real maple syrup. A quart of pure maple syrup costs about $20. Don’t understand why they would skimp. It’s like not serving real butter.

  223. Michael Stephens 2016/12

Creative menu, expertly prepared with professional, warm service in an enjoyable space. All the ingredients for a winning recipe!

Add Southbound to the list of RVA’s must-try restaurants.

  224. George Gitchel 2016/08

Consistently phenomenal dining here at Southbound, along with excellent cocktails, and a wide selection of excellent beer and wine. The staff are friendly, and trained by the best in the business. Think of Southbound as fine dining in a setting that is as laid back as Cheers. I’ve never been disappointed here, and always leave happy.

Don’t forget about brunch! (It might actually be the best brunch I’ve had in RVA)

  225. Robert Jones 2016/07

Likely the finest execution south of the James, sad that it took me 18 months to eat there though I live only 5 miles away. Smoked fish spread was superb, Steelhead it was, with warm toasted pita and housemate bread & butter pickles; Deconstructed Wedge salad was solid and burger & fries superb. Had a drink of Rye, Punt e Mes, Cocchi Torino and Mescal that was on point. Proper and efficient service, though I hate it when I thank someone and they reply “not a problem”. This was a light visit, just checked it out, will certainly return.

  226. Shashwat P. Baxi 2016/06

I held a private business dinner here for 17 people. The food was good. The staff was very helpful and polite. Fun atmosphere. Would definitely go here again!

  227. Karen Hudson 2016/06

    Excellent quality, service and atmosphere

  228. Jessie 2016/06

We booked the private room last week and I can’t say enough about how amazing the service was! The food, well it was delicious. One of the best meals and dining experiences I have had in Richmond in a long time. I will definitely be returning and will be recommending this place to everyone!

  229. Chad Williams 2016/05

Go to spot just south of the James.

  230. A. Nicole Blake 2016/05

Best. Mussels. Ever. Tender, perfectly cooked and paired with okra and sausage. Perfection.

However, be prepared to stay awhile. The kitchen moves slow…which is totally fine because perfection takes time.

  231. Megan Kirby (Megan Sullivan Kirby) 2016/05

5 stars for always delicious and well-priced food, 5 stars for exceptional bar and table service, 5 stars for friendly and attentive hostesses, and 5 stars for atmosphere. FAVORITE restaurant in Richmond, because it is consistently great. Musts: catfish, duck, pickled plate. Kat and Pete will make up special cocktails if you like to be pleasantly surprised, too! I enjoy dates here with my husband, or meeting up with new friends and taking my staff out after a long work week!

  232. Michael Quinn 2016/03

Over priced for quality, 2 mistakes on order

  233. JDLynda Donahue 2016/01

Great atmosphere. We love dining outside in the summer and inside in the winter. The carbonara was delicious and all appetizers are so fresh.

  234. William Stinson 2015/11

Had a great dining experience here last week.

  235. John Gibson 2015/10

Great place with excellent food and killer cocktails

  236. Ladonna Asher Hasty - Hair Cuts,Hairstyles, Hair Color & Color Corrections 2015/06

Enjoyed lunch here tremendously. Glad to have a great spot near my salon.

  237. Chris Bellamy 2015/06

Best food I’ve had in Richmond, bar none, with cocktails to match!

  238. Adam Torborg 2015/01

Richmond has a very crowded upscale comfort food restaurant scene. Unfortunately there are a lot of restaurants that just fill into the mushy middle of serviceable dining in said scene, but there are a few that are head and shoulders above the others. Southbound is definitely in that top tier. The dining room is charming with a comfortable but modern feel. The menu is short but sweet. We shared the pickle plate, and the house made pickles were a great way to get our meal started. The fried catfish and grits were top notch. The house made hot sauce was left to the edges to I could decide how much of its flavor to bring to each bite. It had just a little kick but lots of flavor so I didn’t leave much behind. Also, the pork steak was an amazingly savory dish. They take a pork butt and slow roast it and serve the slices on a bed of rice and vegetables.

Our dessert was a huge apple crisp with a scoop of ice cream, that was sweet, but not too sweet. The service was great and we can’t wait to go back.
