The only thing that ever disappointed me about the restaurant is that I WISH I KNEW ABOUT IT SOONER! $1.75 Oysters On The Half Shell, need I say more?

We came in during Happy Hour last month and we were treated INCREDIBLY by both the bartender and the manager! Also, Chef Tony knows what he’s doing because the food was unreal. We sat at the bar, but based on our experience the place should’ve been packed because of everything here was perfection. From the prices, to the service, to the food everything was fantastic. The food was cooked just right and well seasoned and I’m usually pretty picky. This place and it’s staff is a GEM that I refuse to gatekeep!

The bartender asked us if we wanted to paint pumpkins and of course as any two people in their mid-twenties would, we responded with “Yes please!”. She laid out a paper that covered the bar, paints, brushes, glitter and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Truly going above and beyond with exception service!

Even if she hadn’t given us that experience she still was a fantastic server and I just wish I caught her name. We ordered from the Happy Hour menu 2 draft beers that we’re $2 off at that time, the calamari and NC Pork BBQ Sliders. The drinks, food, service was fantastic, also you can’t beat $1.75 for their fresh Oysters On The Half Shell!

The staff and management gave terrible customer service when hosting a wedding event. They were unable to communicate with regular customers trying to be seated and were unsure whether they wanted to seat us etc. it was very rude and ultimately we left to go to a different restaurants happy hour.

Tony is the BEST chef here. His crabcakes are the best I’ve had outside of Maryland. I had to have my server call him out so I could personally thank him and just so happen he was walking by and I asked was he the chef. He was such a humble and kind gentleman. He was not only preparing food for tables but he had also been attending to a party in the area where events are being held and he was holding it down! Please give him his kudos and the kitchen staff for supporting him. He is a huge asset to this establishment. Looking forward to the next visit.

We chose Sam Millers for our large wedding rehearsal dinner for the location and atmosphere. Initially, the staff was great to work with and very accommodating. They allowed us to keep our cake in their freezer, which was very helpful. Unfortunately, our experience on the day of our event was very disappointing. The event space was not set up as previously stated, the staff did not listen to the requests of the hosts, the entrees were served extremely late into the evening, and not even bread was served while guests waited for dinner. The staff refused to take dinner orders until everyone was seated, which is very difficult to enforce with 60+ people (bathroom, bar for drinks, standing up while holding a baby, saying hello to other guests, etc.) Dinner for some tables weren’t served until 9:30pm when our event was supposed to end. We had several guests leave and order pizza to their hotel room because it was so late (we still paid for their meals they never received). The event started at 6:30pm. This was extremely embarrassing for the parents of the groom, and they were very upset. It’s not worth the money you will spend. In addition, the agreement contract states a microphone is listed under equipment included, although we still were charged $50. However, the staff working our event were nice – the execution was poor. These complaints and frustrations were brought to the managers attention, and we were offered a complementary dinner. Our family will not be returning to this restaurant and I would not recommend hosting an event here.

Stopped here while visiting Virginia and unfortunately had a bad experience. The food was very bland and took forever to come. The service was non-existent. The waitress came to take my order and never came back to refill my drink, ask how the food was etc. I was about to get up to ask another server my bill when my waitress finally showed back up. When waiting for her to run my tab, she proceeds to loudly tell a story to a friend/costumer where she used the F word probably 20 times.

Still sitting at Sam Millers having an awful experience. They’re incredibly short staffed with one waitress managing three sections and the bar, I don’t blame her for any of this. Drinks took 40 minutes to come, and when they did, one had a gnat in it. The “famous” crab soup was bland. And we’re waiting to see what the entree will be like. They should have closed for the night.

We had rehearsal dinner for my son and daughter in law at Sam Miller’s Restaurant on 4/7/23. The manager, Ken Wall, was so professional, helpful, accommodating and made sure everything was perfect!
Todd, Chef Tony, Will & Alli were awesome and ensured everyone was taken care of. The food, service, & atmosphere was wonderful!

Never in my life have I ever experienced a dining experience like this. The restaurant was empty. One party of 8 and one 2 two top. 1 bartender and a hostess. No one took our order for over 30 minutes. Then after we finally ordered we waited another 45 minutes. We could hear the cook cursing and screaming and fighting in the back and throwing things. A kitchen worker sat at the bar the whole time. Then came an overwhelming smell of marijuana. Our kids were so scared and uncomfortable that we got up and just left without ever getting any food. I called to discuss the experience after and was told the chef was overwhelmed. I was like there was no one there and it was a Saturday night-what was there to be overwhelmed about. How do they get off charging $42 a steak with that type of atmosphere. Unreal. Ruined Saturday night.

This used to be a great downtown spot for lunch meetings and it is a shell of its former self. I’ve been coming here about once a week for meetings for the past year since it’s one of the only options open within walking distance. The “signature” crab soup now just tastes like a bowl of liquid flour. I got fried oysters and they were cold and had an extreme amount of cornmeal breading with literally no seasoning. The lettuce for my Caesar was old and wilted. It had very little dressing and little flavor. The croutons were stale. I’ve been going here for a very long time and I held off for a long time to write this review hoping they would improve and it’s sad to see the state of this restaurant. I hope it can return to its former self. I hope they see this review as a challenge to improve to proper standards rather than to tear them down.

It is a noisy environment mainly because of very little sound absorbency. I was there for a group event and they served a Buffet. I think this was one of the worst buffets I have ever had. I would label the quality as acceptable, but the variety as miserable. For some place that expensive I would’ve expected better. did have a good bar though.

On vacation and we tried out this restaurant. We should’ve turned around as soon as we entered because it was dead on Saturday night and stinky. The decor was nice but there we smells of grease and marijuana. The rockfish was salty in some spots and lemony in others, not consistent flavoring and pretty basic. The fondue was just a crab dip with stale bread and the cheese tasted burnt/old/bad. The crab soup was bland. Asparagus tasted spoiled and the steak was bland. All the food was below average and the bill was way too high for the quality of food. I would not recommend anyone eat at this place. Service was good but didn’t make up for awful food.

My Sister took me here for my Birthday while visiting in Richmond. We had a wonderful time. The crab-cakes were wonderful no filler. Tony the Chef heard it was my birthday and came to say hello. He not only wanted to know what kind of cake I liked but brought me a piece to go on the house! I am sorry I do not remember our waiters name but he too went above and beyond. Great job on his part.. It was an enjoyable evening. Thanks. Gail F.

Went for Restaurant Week Fall ’22.

    Pros:
    – friendly staff, our waitress was very nice and attentive
    – fantastic dessert, highly recommend the key lime pie or strawberry cake.

    Cons:
    – food is dated. Our main courses had anemic, overcooked, unseasoned vegetables with giant portions of meat. Steak sauce was too sweet. Rockfish sauce was curdled and overly tart.
    – very disappointed with the oyster trio. The raw oyster and the two cooked oysters arrived at the same temperature – lukewarm. Oysters were not separated from the shell.
    – atmosphere was confused. Could hear the loud bar music from the separate section they put us in that had no music.

    Nitpicks:
    – our waitress was unfamiliar with the etiquette of wine service, was not offered a taste of the bottle before it was poured. Not her fault, she was great! But perhaps a lack of training.
    – wine list was limited

Overall, there are better restaurants in Richmond at the price point. This restaurant needs a revamp in the kitchen to keep up.

The service was amazing but the food was literally inedible. We were only allowed to pick off of a special Valentine’s Day which had good options so not a big deal. The fish was disgusting and extremely fishy. I had to send back my filet I asked to be cooked medium and it was even less cooked than medium rare. We took our desserts to go and still couldn’t even eat those

We went during Richmond Restaurant Week and all they had was the RRW menu, and the restaurant was not full. So it shouldn’t have been too hard to handle service, right? A bit of a wait (ten minutes) to give the order, but more than a half an hour between the appetizer and the entree. As to the food, the soup was quite good, but the crab cake was nearly burned on one side. The chocolate cake dessert was dry, possibly sitting out for quite a while. Disappointing.

Parking was an issue. Being handicapped and a veteran I parked in a spot (not being able to get an explanation of the no parking sign) that appears to convey it was ok to park there. Once in the restaurant I sat at the bar to await the others I asked the young bartender if he believed I was ok where I was parked, He stated they won’t bother you this late and on a weekend night. He also stated that he didn’t have a parking problem as he was parked in front of the entrance door…
I belive management needs to establish a parking policy for employees, public spots that are available for the customers should not be utilized by employees.
With that said I will say the Crab Cakes were Amazing..

I had high hopes for this place, and reserved a table for date night with my fiancé. Unfortunately, when we got there we were rudely greeted by a hostess that seemed annoyed we had come in. We asked if we could sit outside, and we’re brought out to a table. We sat for 30 minutes outside without menus or anybody coming to check on us. Considering the rudeness of the hostess, we decided not to go in and ask what was going on so we got up and left. Hopefully it was just a bad night for the restaurant and we went at the wrong time.

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant here. Her sugar was dropping fast, she’s an insulin dependent diabetic, and the whole restaurant came to her aid and gave a place to get her comfortable and stable, and kept checking on her. They went above and beyond. Deserve more than 5 stars…

Overall a really great time for an intimate conversation or business meeting. For the price I was expecting a little more flavor. The chicken picatta was fried perfectly, but the sauce was a little odd. Salmon and rice was much better dish and had great reviews from friends. Potatoes were a perfect consistency but slightly bland. Same with vegetables. Simple, but good one time dinner. May just expand to new menu items next time.

We had a reservation, but were late trying to find a parking spot. They held it, and when we got there we were pleasantly greeted and had a flawless dinner with drinks, appetizers, mains, and shared dessert.

We had crab soup, the rockfish, and oysters Rockefeller. All of the seafood is fresh and perfectly cooked. The crab soup was excellent –full of crab and probably the best and most flavourful we’ve ever had at a restaurant.

Seating is comfy, and the music is good. The chef, whom we knew was busy, even stopped by our table. The waitstaff is friendly, and ours has a delightful personality. We’ll be back soon!

Ordered the crab dip for pick-up and was extremely disappointed to get a container of what seemed to be cream cheese with some crab bits thrown on top. We had to add our own seasonings as there was almost no taste to the dip. Two stars b/c at least there was a good amount of crab.

We had the Cosmopolitans, the classic and Manhattan drink with the oyster samplers mashed potatoes crab soup with a chicken Caesar salad. We only had light meals because we had previously eaten 1hr prior to going. However everything was still filling and really good! Our 2nd time eating here.. The 1st time was not so good maybe because it was take out but we decided to try it again… Pricy but not to bad for 2 people close to $100 including tips.. The staff was awesome and so was the owner! I will go back for dine in.. If you are visiting the area like we are you should try it.

I was excited to find raw bar right around the corner from my hotel. On my visit, I inquired about the oysters on the half shell, and was more than a little surprised to be told they “don’t know what kind” of oysters they are, they just “know they’re from VA”. Not a great look for a place whose business is seafood. (I’m skeptical that these aren’t just gulf oysters, given the size and the mildness.) Any raw bar worth their salt will have at least a few varieties, and any place that even calls themselves a seafood restaurant should at least be able to identify what variety of oysters they’re serving (Louisiana gets a pass, but you know, we’re two hours south of DC, and this is a foodie city). Regardless, I tried a half dozen, but only ate two – though they were served on ice, they were clearly not chilled in the kitchen, and came out tepid, which anyone can tell you is a very dangerous game to be playing with raw shellfish. They were also not well shucked, and most of the liquor was drained or had been spilled. Finally, I was excited to get some mignonette this far south (harder to find in the south than NE or PNW), but this was perhaps the worst mignonette I’ve had – it wasn’t gross, just terribly bland.

I gave three stars because the drink specials were good, the staff was friendly, and the space definitely has potential, but as a seafood junkie who travels about 10 months a year and eats all over the map, this was pretty disappointing.

This place…🔥🔥🔥🔥 the oysters were absolutely amazing, the crab dip some of the best I’ve tasted. Calamari was great, but the rockfish… WOW! Ducked into Miller’s to get out of the rain on a slow Monday night in early October, there were all of perhaps four of us there at about 7pm.

Decided to try the “Ocean Cob.” It seemed like a good idea, since I like both Cob Salads and shellfish. Nice idea but disappointing execution. The crab, scallops and shrimp were all pre-cooked and chilled, perhaps the entire salad was pre-made and refrigerated-it tasted like it anyway.

Based on other comments I’d say stay away on slow Mondays.

Had a wonderful dinner tonight at Sam Miller’s on E. Cory St. The meal was phenomenal, especially the crab cakes. I read a review here saying they have no flavor… they are not saturated with salt so that they produce a very delicate taste. The head chef is personable and engaging and our waitress very prompt and attentive.

Unfortunately I had a bad experience. The service was slow on an empty Monday night. I order the Crab soup bowl and they brought me a cup with old crackers and a dozen oysters and they came out at the same time with the soup and for my main dish I order the Rock Fish. The presentation of the food was nicely arranged unfortunately the Fish was too salty that the only thing I could taste and the broccoli was over cook. The building and location is beautiful I just wish the food and service would be better.

So visited Sam miller’s 2 days ago on a business trip. Inside the place is very upscale and nice. We where seated and I ordered the filet Mignon, scallops, asparagus and mashed potatoes. When I received my plate the portion was a bit small for the $50 tag. No scallops…I quickly told the waitress I was missing the scallops she said they would come right out and sorry. I started cutting the Filet, a bit underdone from Medium but edible. Took a few bites but noticed a really big strip of fat/gristle I couldn’t even cut through. I mean it was so bad a Sawzall would strain to cut through it. I alerted the waitress and chef came out to immediately apologize and take the meal off the bill. I thanked them. Asked about my scallops and was told they ran out. So my dinner that night consisted of asparagus and potatoes. Nothing else was offered.

Went for dinner on a work trip, was specifically after some fresh oysters. Almost didn’t try this place – usually don’t venture below 4.5 stars in a new city.

Walked in at 6pm on a Monday, was seated at a two top at the very back of the restaurant next to the kitchen/alley door at a wobbly table with a paper tablecloth that barely covered the table. The table next to me was being used as a temporary office space and had a laptop and various supplies set up on it. The front half of the restaurant has so much character…the back section I was seated in felt like what I imagine a bowling alley crossed with a Red Lobster would be: cheap carpet, cheap furniture, etc. The menus were cut by hand (poorly) and printed in some undignified font (not comic sans thank god) with clip art pictures. I ordered 1/2 dozen oysters and an old fashioned, and decided I would wait for them to come as a test run before ordering more.

The oysters were massive, that’s about the only good thing about them. In fact they were so massive I’m not totally certain they were local and not gulf oysters but i’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on that one. They were not super fresh but not awful, but none of them had been released from the shell, and most of the liqueur had been spilled on the ice. Two or three had shell fragments.

The old fashioned was actually quite tasty (esp for $5), though served without a citrus garnish- unless you count the 4-5 things floating in it. I’m choosing to believe they were very dried out orange pulp for my sanity.

I tabbed out after that and went elsewhere rather than risk a main course.

We had my son’s rehearsal dinner here on 9/24 with over 70 guests. I can’t say enough good things about Ken and his staff. Things that were important to me that mattered: 1) excellent communication with us on menu and ideas 2) great set-up 3) they worked with us on within our budget and were extremely flexible / willing to work with us / and through-out the event they did fantastically well. The food was on point, and they were very accommodative to some of the guests that had dietary restrictions as well. Great job, Ken and your crew! I highly recommend them if you’re considering a gathering.

We did not enjoy our food. The steak was overcooked and the chicken had a thick coating that was fried too long. The service was inattentive at best. Our server was more interested in chatting with her friends or regulars than checking to see if we needed anything. Never asked if our food was okay or if we needed refills of our drinks. What makes that even worse was that it wasn’t a busy time that evening. We would not return.

Easily the worst food I’ve had in RVA yet. Went here for Valentine’s Day as we heard great things about this place especially in regards to their seafood. We spent upwards of $200 dollars for two 3 course meals that had little to no flavor. Very unpleased with the ‘special menu’ for vday. Service and drinks from bar were ok, but the food was absolutely horrible… would’ve had better luck with a frozen microwave meal. Will not be coming back.

  138. Jessica N. 2020/10

Staff was so friendly. Food was outstanding. My kids are their mini sliders and my husband and I loved our meals. Delicious food. Very clean and took many Covid precautions. Felt safe.

  139. Tammy Campbell 2020/10

The hot appetizer sampler was pretty good for starters but it ended up being the best part of the meal. My husband got the fish tacos with fries and I ordered the teriyaki salmon with cucumber tomato salad in tzatziki and a side of sweet potato fries. We wanted to try the crab cake too so we added that on to our plate. While the salmon was cooked perfectly there was no tzatziki and I’m pretty sure there was no teriyaki glaze on my salmon. The crab cake had a good taste and lots of crab meat but i had a bite that had a big shell in it and then my husband did the same. We did not finish the crabcake for fear of choking on a shell. The taco was pretty horrible with a fried piece of fish that looked like a large chicken tender drenched with their sauce over very chunky pieces of purple cabbage in a soft shell. There was supposed to be a jalapeño salsa but it was a couple pieces of tomato and a couple slices of jalapeño. My salmon was also suppose to have a salsa but there was probably 5 little tomato chunks and a couple pieces of onion. As someone in the food industry I didn’t want to complain but could not pay the full price for these overpriced and overhyped dishes. I asked our server if we could speak to the manager once he came back to check on our meal. The manager took care of the bill but I don’t know that we will ever return for entrées.

Also, the restaurant team has maintained all restriction and mandates put in place but the state government so you can rest assured you will feel safe and well taken care of.

They also offer take out and from what I heard will be offering delivery very soon.

We walked in with plans to have dinner. We called beforehand and were told they were open for dinner. When we walked in, everyone in the bar area just stood there and looked at us. It was sort of like being in an episode if Alfred Hitchcock Presents. No one seated us. No one greeted us. They all just stood there and looked at us sort of like they were all retarded., so we left and had a great dinner at another place down the street. Avoid this place at all costs.

  157. Alan Minor 2020/05

I know Sam Miller’s reputation has taken a hit recently, but we really enjoyed our dinner there for New Year’s eve. Appetizers, entrees and desserts we’re all very good. My daughter had the pimento cheese appetizer and it was out of this world good. Steaks and salmon were very flavorful and the peppermint Oreo pie was delicious.

My partner and I were staying next door at the Berkeley (which is a wonder hotel) for his birthday. The front desk had seen my comment about champagne for our room and said that though the hotel kitchen was closed she knew a wonderful place I could get some from. She called Sam Miller’s for me and I spoke with Andrea who helped me pick out a bottle of champagne and said she’d bring it over in 15 minutes (to give us time to park and get to our room). Not only did she bring the champagne but also champagne flutes and even a piece of cake which tasted wonderful!

Later that night we decided to go here for dinner. Andrea was our server and she remembered me from before even wishing my partner a happy birthday. It looked as though she was the only waitress in the restaurant. She was very attentive and bubbly, kept conversation up with us and recommended an appetizer which didn’t disappoint. The chef came out from the kitchen twice to make sure everyone liked their food.

I ordered the rockfish which was a large portion with a delicious sauce, rice and broccoli. My partner got the steak with fries (out of this world, so amazing!) and asparagus. He also got a side of scallops which were fresh and very well seasoned. The sides could have been a bit bigger especially for the price (about $30 per entree) but they were very well made.

I would eat here again in a heart beat. Amazing food and sweet staff. Every was wearing masks and keeping a safe distance.

Stopped for lunch while my partner had a meeting down the block. We are traveling with our dog and the staff was wonderful to get us our food and some cool water for him at their adorable sidewalk table. It has not been easy for restaurants lately, but this one was clean and doing it’s best with likely a reduced staff. Glad to help support placs esike this.

Jamie Braxton is excellent! He does the Oyster social and it’s awesome! He also prepared a Oysters Rockefeller that’s to die for!!

  174. Stephen Sanna 2019/12

Very disappointing, service was slow, and there were only 4 tables occupied. Good was over salted and expensive.and no desserts ?

  175. David Hand 2019/12

Came department luncheon with a group of 30 people. The service was great. The food was fine. Since I did not pay for the meal I cannot give a value for what we got.

  176. Ari Fisler 2019/12

Come here often on Thursdays where they have an amazing oyster special. Jamie the oyster guy is the best. Very friendly and does a great job with the oysters. Great experience every time. Great oysters. Friendly staff. Lovely crowd. Thanks

  180. Halle Crider 2019/11

    small portions
their main course lacked flavor, and the amount of fries you get is the bare minimum.
i had like 3 waiters, so i didn’t know who to tip.
i sat for a while before i got my bill.

  181. Paul Puccinelli 2019/11

staff not the best, food was okay…. maybe it’s good for the hotel crowd… I could prob send 8o dollars better elsewhere

  182. DaVida Davis 2019/11

Convenient location for downtown workers. Good menu choices but the portions are a bit small. The crab cakes are delicious!

Will never give this place my business! I made an online reservation for me, my wife, and daughter. When I got there the host told me they were not seating the public, because the had a party going on. When started to respond a lady walked up that looked like a manager ,and proceeded to say the same. I finally got to respond and said then why the hell are you still taking reservations if you cannot honor them? They just stood there looking dumbfounded. I walked out, and made my mind up to never give my business there. Also the lady was very rude with her tone of voice when she told me. No sorry or nothing from either of them.

  184. Adriana High 2019/11

Went here on a school trip today, I ordered a burger and asked for a sweet tea…. I never got my tea… my burger was undercooked. When we asked to have the burger cooked well done they told us they “don’t do that” and gave attitude. Keep in mind we were high schoolers who had to PREPAY for our trip… my table drank our drinks until they were empty, when asked if we could get a refill we were told that they are trying to get dessert to us they will get them soon…. we never got refills, we got nasty undercooked, soggy dessert. I would not recommend my dog to eat here….

  185. Dennis Joebgen 2019/11

I wish I could give it a better review because I like to see local businesses succeed. Only reason I give it the second star is because the food was mostly fine. Went there for Valentine’s dinner which was a prix fixe menu (should’ve seen the writing on the wall when we had no trouble getting a last minute reservation). With almost every course, starting with cocktails, the server brought the wrong thing to my partner… I was lucky and mine was usually correct. At one point a completely different server tried to serve both of us the wrong salads after which there was a very long delay before we received the correct salads. This was actually a pattern for the rest of the evening, we ended up being there over 2 hours! Another couple was seated 30 minutes after us and they were done 10 minutes before us. (They had a different server and didn’t seem happy with some of the service miscues either, like getting their dessert while they were still eating their entree.) I would chalk this up to it being a busy night but the place never seemed that busy. As for the food mine was mostly fine though the Chilean Sea Bass was the driest I’ve ever experienced. Then there was the mess with our wine orders being reversed — twice! All in all… I won’t be back.

  186. James Boehler 2019/10

Doesn’t even deserve 1 star me and 18 coworkers came for dinner. 3 hours later after a few cocktails which took 30 minutes or more between each drink then the appetizers came. About an an hour and a half we got our cold over cooked steak. Dont waste your time or money.

  187. Jesse L 2019/10

    Swanky!

  188. Susan Cary 2019/10

Always a good experience. Very good service, food and wine choices!

  189. Mark Masengale 2019/10

We went for lunch in a Saturday. Fairly empty restaurant. Nothing to hate about the place, but it’s definitely not great. Crab soup is yummy. Oyster Po boy sandwich ($15 and quite small) is good. Fried calamari is average. Shaved sirloin sandwich ($15) – don’t order it. It’s a dried out roast beef sub with a nearly unbearable taste. Service was good. The restaurant interior appears worn out and neglected, with wobbly tables etc. The building itself fits the historic charm of the Shockoe area. We enjoyed our lunch, but nothing here calls for a return visit or a recommendation to others.

  190. Aileen Lancaster 2019/09

First visit there but not my last. Very nice experience.

  191. David Elliott 2019/08

Jelly does not go on steaks.

  192. Ragan McManus 2019/08

Food wasn’t worth the price and service was just “ok.’

  193. Emily Sayles 2019/08

Average at best, frequently mess up to go orders, food is of lower quality that you would expect for the price. It’s a bar more than a restaurant.

  194. Matthew Hebb 2019/08

The food wasn’t bad from what I tried, but they had terrible computer issues and it took nearly an hour to get our checks delivered, sorted, and paid. Perhaps under normal circumstances this would have been better.

  195. Fernando Temple 2019/08

Food was good but took twice as long as it needed to. We had about 8 people in our group and other people around us ordered, received there food and finished before we got our food. Especially considering most of us had a salad or sandwich. The salad was huge and tasted good. The services was also good and they were really good about coming around to refill drinks regularly.

It’s a really nice space! I went to the, Tea Dance ( it was my first time there ) the service left a little to be desired… no. let me be honest! It was our first bartender that wasn’t very attentive everybody else was very pleasant. I hope that there’s many more of these tea dances to come over the next couple of months ,since the weather will be nice.

Just went for happy hour. They had a decent selection of local beers on draft and all the standards in bottles. They were out of a lot of the drafts, though. May have just been delivery day or something. The bartender/waitress was very nice and apologetic. Overall not a bad place to grab a drink. I’d go back.

  214. Stephen Northcutt 2019/05

I ordered the Crab Cake it was 17 it is Sam Miller’s signature crab cake on a brioche bun with lettuce and house tartar sauce on the side. It wasn’t really busy at all but we had to wait like an hour for our food. They forgot the side of tartar sauce. All-in-all not too impressed. The food was okay the service was good other that the wait. I won’t be going back or recommending to my friends to go here. The sweet potato fries were really good. That’s what is keeping it at a 3 star.

AMAZING food and the ambiance is warm and inviting.

I was actually visiting from out of town and just decided to make a reservation there, but had no idea it was in a fancy area of Richmond business district.

    SO…Why 4 stars?

    The waiter.

I had actually gone in there at 8 at night and they were closing by 10 p.m. so there was barely anybody in there.

The waiter seemed more intent on getting us to leave and it was only 9:30pm.

I was a waiter and I hate that behavior. It’s rude and kills a dining experience. No one likes to feel like they’re being thrown out after spending over $150 on food.

She-crab soup is a must have. I go to Sam’s as a treat on weekends. Venue is special, historic, and beautiful. Perfect for people watching. Would give it five stars, but parking makes this a place I visit for special occasions only, even though I would like to visit more.

  236. Laura Mowbray 2019/01

Went there as a large group. (They were expecting us as reservations were made and our meals were prepaid) Meals were disgusting. Burgers were barely seared on outside and completely raw. I told blonde server our table would like them cooked well done. Her response was they’re all cooked the same. My response was if they come out raw they’re going back. Meals were brought out and she only had my plate in hand asking who asked for the well well well done burger as she slammed it in front of me. Also chips fell off a plate at our table 1/2 on the floor 1/2 on the servers tray. She picked them up with her fingers and put them back on the plate and served plate as was. Where was the health inspector!?! Seriously!! Bad food, very slim portions, disrespectful, unsanitary all the way around!!! STAY AWAY!!!! AND SAVE YOURSELF FROM GETTING SICK AND YOUR MONEY!!!!
I did speak to the owner who apologized saying he would speak to the server that this was all unacceptable. Not to mention every soda ordered (different kinds) was completely flat. Dessert was gross as well……AVOID!!!!!

  237. Damian Bucovsky 2019/01

Great ambiance, service, food and prices.
    I lived the crabcakes

  238. Lea *** 2019/01

Burgers were raw, when requested to have it cooked more we were told no until complaining, brought out a burnt burger on a burnt bun, all soda was flat, server spilt chips on the floor and all over her tray, left chips on the floor, picked chips that were on the tray with bare hands and threw them on the plate and served it, small proportions, rude servers (complained about each other in front of customers), dessert was rubbery and not good, one person at our table was brought out a half of a proportion of the mystery dessert compared to another person at the table, only giving it 1 star because I have to.

  239. DeNee Dickerson 2019/01

Headed over to Sam Miller’s for a team lunch earlier this week and couldn’t have had a better experience! Both the food and service were great and we will definitely be back. Highly recommend the crab dip and crab cake sandwich!

  240. Jaehyun Park 2019/01

Absolutely nice restaurant in downtown Richmond. Especially they serves really fresh seafoods and crab cake is the best which I’ve ever had before in Richmond~! And the crew was so kind and professional so that she can satisfy us all through the dinner. And steaks what my colleagues had were so nice too. I definitely reommend this place to anyone who come to Richmond, VA sometimes.

I attended a function with a bar setup and appetizers. Everything was great. Excellent bartenders. Old school atmosphere.

Came back for another event September 2018 still old school, bad food, over cooked meat, appetizers were bad. Coffee was horrible. I do a lot honest reviews I would not recommend this place for a business function. Way too many good places in RVA

Gave this place three chances. We really wanted it to work because its a cool little place in a great location. Bottom line-its cafeteria food at fine dining prices. My striped bass was actually white bass and was about a day from spoiling. My wife ordered the filet med rare…came out Pittsburgh…sent it back…same steak had been put back on the grill and was STILL Pittsburgh rare. Will not be spending any money here again. $160 last night for a terrible meal.

  296. Ken Blair 2017/03

  297. Megan T 2017/03

My family and I came here on vacation. The service was great. I got the Filet Au Poivre which was really good. My family ordered a variety of other things like the Blackened Shrimp Tacos, Surf & Turf Burger, Marinated Skirt Steak, and the Creole Hot Pot. The only edible thing out of those meals was the burger. 3 of my family members tried the tacos, all of which were sick as dogs the next day. 2 of them got the Creole Hot Pot which was $28 worth of tomato soup. Barely had any crab meat and no sausage like the menu states. Wouldn’t recommend eating here.

Food is good and priced at what you would expect for downtown Richmond. However, raw oysters on the half-shell are incredibly expensive. $2.50 per oyster, that means a dozen will set you back $30! I’ve been to many places that serve oysters by the dozen at less than half that price. This place is billed as an “Oyster Bar”, unless you want to drop some serious cash, get the poor boy oyster sandwich instead.

I’m giving a low rating because it’s not the type of place we were looking for. It’s really pricey and menu is limited.

Delicious food, impeccable service and hospitality, along with an awesome atmosphere of downtown rva without a million tables on top of you; such a classy joint! #1 spot for sure and Chef Ryan is a class A guy that truly loves what he does and will bend over backwards for your dining experience!

My peeps! Love the staff & the chef is extraordinary. Parking is easy right out front! Mussels in curry with bread! Ahh for a cold day & Sam Millers! Comfortable booths & ample seating. Go!

The crab soup was great! If I come back, it will be for that dish.

I came here for Sunday brunch with the family. We happened to be on the street while hunting Pokemon. (Lots of Pokestops near by, btw.). We had crab soup, breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg and Gouda), eggs Benedict, and crabcake sandwich. Each entree came with a side, which was surprising based on the menu. The crabcake sandwich had way too much bun, but the crabcake itself was basically pure lump crab, which is good. The breakfast sandwich was a pretty good deal for six bucks. The eggs Benedict came on a croissant, and my wife thought it lacked flavor.

Service was very nice. They put up with our fussy two year old. The location is in a charming cobblestone stoned section of Cary street near Shockhoe Bottom.

Smallish drink spot. Good beer on tap. They have food too, which is fine, but a good place to catch up with someone.

Good seafood and atmosphere, the linguine reminded me of Applebee’s.

The oysters are amazing and fresh. Enjoyed the crab soup so much. Drinks are definitely on point. This place will be a new permanent staple.

    The worst service ever.

Great Location, Great Food, Good staff. Pricey but worth it

Service was NOT acceptable. Took an hour to get food for a party of two when a party of 6, one of which ordered the same entree as me, received their food first. Never again.

Parking was easy (and only $2) in parking deck on 12th. Reception was cordial and dining area fresh and elegant. Server was attentive and friendly. Food was out of this world with a beautiful presentation. I greatly enjoyed the Filet with Crab meat, béarnaise sauce, and asparagus!

This probably used to be a pretty decent restaurant, but the food really wasn’t much to write home about. The best part of or meal was the burger and fries. Skip the world famous crab soup and ocean salad, the former was pastey, and the later felt like it had been on the shelf for at least a day or two.

Was eager to try a Richmond landmark for Valentine’s Day, but left disappointed. They had a set three course menu, but I was advised while making my reservations that you could order off the regular menu. Maybe it’s the cocktail movement in Richmond, but I was disappointed that they did not have a cocktail menu. The crab soup contained maybe two pieces of crab meat. The portion sizes of the entrees were laughable. I ordered the filet medallions and half lobster. I just went back to their website to confirm it said medallions because I got one that might have totaled two ounces and the half lobster was about three bites. On a positive note, the asparagus and fingerling potatoes were pretty good and were the highlight of the meal. My wife’s plate of oscar filet did look pretty good, but her medium filet was cooked well to well done. Service wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t good. Took too long to get refills on water and beer. A table next to us sat for fifteen minutes before a waiter realized they were there. I hope Sam Millers can survive but they might need to totally revamp their menu and service to do so. Or maybe it was just a bad night.

    Beautiful waterfront location

Old bar still has the ambiance. Service seems spotty but there are some good menu items

I think this place is perfect for lunch downtown. It’s quick, tasty and the server was very attentive. We will definitely go back and grab more of the delish sweet potato fries. I had a crab melt and my lunch companion had a burger topped with crab – both were great! Also, its tastes like the actually make the iced tea using tea not the cheap stuff.

Disappointing! Party of 4. Took 30 minutes to put in order. Another 30 to get food. (yes, 1hr before eating) Filet was DRY, over cooked and cold, fries limp. Date said it was obvious her meal sat under the heat lamp. There were only 3 other couples in the dining room. House Merlot was good! To many other places to go before returning.

    Just lacking

  325. Marty Martin 2011/05

The food was okay, but the atmosphere, style of menu, etc. would suggest a better quality of food. I was a bit disappointed.

Went to Sam Miller’s for Valentine’s Day with my wife. I chose the restaurant based on their Valentine’s Day menu, which had some good selections. We arrived at 6pm and the restaurant was not very full, except for a few patrons at the bar. There was an area off to the left with dining tables, however, we were escorted to the back of the restaurant and seated next to the kitchen and rear exit door. The table was a little wobbly and aside from the low lighting, there really wasn’t much in the way of ambiance. There was a two person band doing covers of various songs which was nice, but gave the whole experience a slightly less elegant feel.

We ordered the 4 course V-Day special. My shrimp entrée came out first, followed shortly thereafter by some bread. I felt the bread should have come out first and that maybe it was brought out as an afterthought, although I did enjoy the shrimp entrée. My wife had the brie, which she had never tried before and didn’t really care for. The second entrée was the crab & lobster bisque which was pretty good, but not as flavorful as what I’ve had at other restaurants. For my main course, I ordered the surf & turf with my steak medium well. The steak came out very pink inside and the juice was red. The “crabcake” was basically a mound of crab meat with very little to no bread. Neither was seasoned very well and as a result were both bland. The sweet potatoes that came with it however were pretty tasty. My wife had ordered the crab cake as her entrée, which was basically two piles of crab meant, with which she was disappointed as well. Finally, I had the brownie ice cream sundae for dessert which was excellent. My wife ordered the cheesecake, which was served plain with a strawberry on top. I’ve had better tasting cheesecake at Chik-Fil-A. I felt they could have at least added a drizzle of strawberry syrup or glaze to give some extra flavor. As it was, it tasted like it had been sitting in a freezer and hadn’t had enough time to thaw out and like the main course, was very bland.

Overall I was disappointed with my experience at Sam Miller’s. I don’t often spend $127 dollars on a meal for two and when I do, I expect to at least be satisfied with my meal. The fact that neither my wife nor myself particularly enjoyed our meal was especially displeasing. The wait staff was pleasant, although not quite as attentive as they could have been, considering the small amount of customer s present at the time. Maybe on a different day with a different selection of menu items, I might have a better experience, but based on my visit, I would not return to Sam Miller’s, nor could I recommend it to any of my friends.
