My husband and I discovered Momotaro while walking around Carytown, and we decided to try it a couple of weeks ago. He’s from NYC, so he’s had a lot of good Japanese food over the years.

We tried the miso soup first, and we immediately knew we’d found a gem of a place. Next we tried their Angie roll and Double Rainbow roll – perfection. The shumai was literally the best we’ve ever had. We also got a pot of hot green tea, which normally I’m not a fan of. Theirs was SO good we finished the whole pot together. We ordered shrimp hibachi next, and it was just as delicious as everything else. We had strawberry mochi with ice cream for dessert (honestly the best mochi I’ve had).

Service was great – prompt and polite. The chef came out to check on everything a few times and he was super polite and grateful.

We both agree this is one of our new favorite restaurants we’ve ever eaten at. We went back again tonight and ordered the miso soup, Angie roll, shumai, green tea, and mochi ice cream again, and tried their shrimp curry bowl. Of course we loved that too! I can’t recommend Momotaro enough!!

My wife and I first ate at Momotaro about a week ago and we immediately fell in love with it! I’ve had a lot of Japanese food over the years and I still love all the food I’ve ordered so far. I don’t frequently come across good miso soup, but their miso was so good that I was excited to try everything else. And it didn’t disappoint! Their shumai is like nothing else I’ve ever tried–light, sweet, and savory all at the same time. Their Angie Roll and Double Rainbow Rolls were all the way across–I mean *delicious*. We tried their hibachi and curry bowl, which were both so flavorful. I loved their green tea and their dessert as well. The atmosphere was great, the service was quick, and the quality and amount of food you get for the price is simply amazing. We’ll be going back a lot!

Came in at 630 on a Monday and grabbed appetizers (miso soup and ginger salad) which were great and then ordered a crazy dragon roll along with a volcano roll. Both came out in orderly time and tasted amazing. The service was quick and polite, never pushing to order or leave. Would come back anytime!

Shellfish allergy warning: I think this is the only bad review I’ve ever written but I wanted to do it for other people with food allergies. I really wanted to love this place but honestly I was given a real scare and will not be coming back. I was searching for an appetizer with my friend and I asked the server if the Shumai (just shumai on menu) had shrimp. I know they traditionally contain shrimp but I’ve always seen “Shrimp Shumai” on menus and really wanted dumplings. The server replied that they did not have shrimp. I said that was fantastic, expressly mentioning that I have a shrimp allergy. Appetizer comes out I take a bite and immediately know it’s shrimp, slight taste of fish with pink and white meat. I pointed it out to the server who had to check with back-of-house themselves if the dumplings did or did not have shrimp. They comes back to apologize and explains that there were 2 varieties of dumpling—one with shrimp and one with pork. They said the shrimp shumai would not appear on the check, I asked if we could just have the pork dumplings as long as it’s a different recipe. I ended up calling my partner who was at our home a 5 minute walk away. If my partner wasn’t home and if I wasn’t familiar with the museum district and where the nearest drug store/corner store was-then I would have been in huge danger. I was already in danger but fortunately my allergy is not as deadly as it could be—still serious but my partner was able to deliver some antihistamines in time. Sushi was absolutely fine but perhaps a little low in quality for the price. Our server was completely absent the entire time but I’m not sure what their team was telling them to do so I won’t hold it against them. My friend and I joked that the most disappointing part of it all was that the dumplings weren’t even that good and they did not comp the pork dumplings. Please inform all staff of common allergens from day one. Not everyone will have the same luck as I did

    Ordered via GrubHub:

Got two simple spicy rolls ($6.50 each) and a Kani salad ($7.50).

Did not get what I paid for, and the taste isn’t lacking, it is just missing. Rice tasted funky, and no flavors in the tuna/salmon. The spicy wasn’t even there. The salad was mainly a leaf of lettuce with very little fake crab meat as it was. It was flavorful, but wasn’t much so definitely a loss on almost $30. I did save $3 since it was my first, and last, time ordering from this restaurant.

Sushi is an art. It’s a rice dish as well. You absolutely have to get the rice right or it’s not good. The rice was so wet I couldn’t even tell if it was sushi grade rice. Fish was not fresh.

Everyone in the restaurant was kind and courteous. I wanted to like this place, However, the food was terrible. They only offer 3 beverages, and no ice, I had warm tap water in a small plastic cup. We ordered multiple items and every single one of them was bad. The rice was mushy, the rolls were missing imgredients, and they all tasted wrong. The portions were small. The bathroom has no toilet paper, like not even an empty roll or an empty holder, just nothing. I probably won’t return as Richmond has a bunch of better options.

  22. David Flodstrom 2022/08

Awful sushi. Don’t waste your time or money. I wish I had read the reviews. Delivery was fast but now I know why. Rice was disgusting, completely mushed, more like a paste than actual rice. I’ve never seen sushi repel soy sauce like it did from this place. Rolls are sloppily covered in sauce. Fish is gross, rice is gross, the soy sauce they give you is unusually bad. I got a side salad and it was pathetic, it’s a simple salad but it should be 3x the size.

I’ve passed this spot a few times with my partner, but when we finally decided to go in and check it out it was when they were closed between service hours. The owner invited us in to dine anyway, and was super polite. We had the carytown and volcano rolls, along with the salmon and flying fish roe nigiri. We also had some plum wine. Everything tasted great, and the ambiance was nice too. Had a great meal and really enjoyed ourselves, 5 stars for sure!

The service was ok… Not stellar, but ok. The food was flavorful, but the sushi and sashimi was … Anemic at best. It was, for the amount of food provided very expensive.

I don’t know what these people are talking about that didn’t like it. It’s friggin delicious! No I don’t work for them or know anyone that works there I swear! I’m simply a customer that ordered off door dash and while reading bad reviews got nervous but I was beyond pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. If I had to give one bad comment it would be that it was a little pricey but I can completely understand with all this inflation!

Wow. I don’t know what to say. My fiancee and I were strolling down Carytown. We passed by the restaurant at first and by the time we were ready to eat and walked back to the restaurant they were ten minutes past closing time for their lunch service. They saw us looking at their menu again and invited us inside. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the music was perfect for a date day. I started by ordering plum wine and salmon Nigiri and flying fish roe sashimi. I personally start with nigiri and sashimi at any new sushi place I visit to get a feel for how thier sushi will be. The salmon was perfectly prepared and the roe sashimi was a great transition to some special rolls. After that we had the carytown roll, volcano, and finally ordered the tornado roll to-go. I am terribly grateful that they opened their doors for us. It may have been the best sushi I’ve had Richmond, so far. The service was great, too. It wasn’t till after we had our meal that I looked at the reviews; I can only go off my experience but I would 10/10 recommend people go here and will definitely be going back myself!

I was there for lunch today. The staff was friendly, the food came out fast and I had a relatively good experience. I had what I thinks may have been a new item on their menu called miso ramen (the waiter also kept asking what I thought of the dish so I am sure that it is a new item on the menu). It’s not ramen. It was stir fry noodles in miso soup with some broccoli and a boiled egg ( not soft boiled and seasoned but hard boiled). It was a cold day and it was a nice soup on its own but it most certainly was not ramen nor was it worth the $14 I spent on it (I would have paid maybe $6-8 for it). When I see ramen (which normally is sold between $10-12) with a $14 price tag I am expecting springy ramen noodles, thick creamy soft boiled egg, and a rich broth to go with it (or at least something that can be called ramen). Ramen takes a lot of time and effort, even if it isn’t made with meat, so it was disappointing that I spent $14 on stir fry noodles with miso soup broth. I got tofu on my miso noodle soup (which is what it should be called) and I was delighted by it. It’s battered and deep fried tofu cubes. They tasted sort of like chicken nuggets to me. If I come back I would order the fried tofu on its own as an appetizer and ask for some sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. Normally I tip but the $14 miso soup made me not want to so I didn’t. Since this is namely a sushi place I may come back and try the sushi and give this place a better rating.

The gnats enjoyed the sushi way more than we did. There were so many gnats. Everything we ordered was bland. The rolls were cut way too big. The plates were dirty. The waitress was very friendly, but I cannot return just based on that.

Ambience is really great and peaceful but the food was alright. Nothing spectacular but on a scale of 1-10 I’d rate it 6.7. The plates that the food was served on were…icky. They were dusty and the small saucer on my table meant for the soy sauce was severely so. Miso was watery and ok, I had to pour some soy sauce in mine to make it less tasteless. I’m asian and have tried grocery sushi to $70+ sushi tastings and was disappointed that this was slightly comparable in taste to grocery sushi. I’ve grown up going to restaurants where the hygiene wasn’t top-notch but the food was amazing- however this was not the case in my experience. I really wanted to enjoy this place more but the food falls short of expectations. The owner was very nice though

This was the worst food I’ve ever paid for. I got medium rare steak hibatchi. This is what came. It was $21. Over cooked to the point of resembling jerky and absolutely horrible. $4 salad. Just lettuce. $3 soup, looked and tasted like dishwater. I am flabbergasted that this place is even allowed to serve food. Spoke to someone on the phone and they blamed the Uber driver for “eating my food”. Disgusting place that hires an equally disgusting staff. These people are shameless and have no quality— food or service.

Worst sushi I’ve ever had in my life. Fish roe was an off color and tasted weird. Everything tasted weird. Rice looked like it had been smashed prior to being used for the rolls, you could see the seaweed through it. Rice also had a strange taste.

A waste of money. The sushi is worse than the sort you’d find at a gas station or grocery store.
Some pieces have almost nothing but rice in them. The rice was HORRIBLE. Like gummy-white-paste HORRIBLE.
This is the worst sushi I’ve had. Not just in Richmond. Anywhere. Ever.

  41. Sarah Johnston 2021/11

If I could give this a zero star I would. I received a LOAF of rice as you can tell from the picture. The tempura crisps were so stale. It is a 1:10 ratio of fish to rice. Really disappointed in this restaurant and have zero plans to go back and would not recommend.

I love sushi, have tried a million different restaurants and used to work at a great sushi bar for four years. This is the worst sushi I’ve ever had. I mean, i would rather get sushi from the grocery store. The rice was super overcooked and mushy. The roll was also practically all rice, with little to no actual fish and the roll was drowned in sauces that further contributed to the mushiness of it all. I also ordered shumai which were super over cooked (wonton wrapping was practically falling off) and there wasn’t any sauce for it?? Not to be dramatic but I’ve never gotten dumplings without sauce ? lol. I can count on one hand how many reviews I’ve written but I’m pretty annoyed with the quality for what I spent. That’s another thing… their prices are the same as way better sushi joints. if I paid less I would be more understanding but I paid just as much as I have at other places. Sticking to Miyabi and sumo San!

  44. Maya 2021/10

  46. Jon Emch 2021/09

I ordered via Postmates, and came to pick up. One of the items I ordered came with a salad and a soup, but neither were included. Sushi was very bland and did not look too great (some of it looked like canned tuna..) I ordered the nigiri dinner, and the fish was not super fresh either.

  47. Charlie Deckman 2021/09

Absolutely Horrible! Ordered take out tonight and had it delivered door dash. Salads had brown edged lettuce and ginger dressing was like water. My rolls that contained cream cheese were no good as the cream cheese was spoiled. The entire meal was thrown away in fear of getting sick. I would like my money refunded as this was the worst experience I have had locally with a Sushi restaurant.

  48. Kaylyn Tucker 2021/09

Each roll was either incredibly bland or outright disgusting. I’ve never eaten sushi with ground fish instead of whole pieces or sushi that had what looked and tasted like Velveeta cheese drizzled over it before and I’ll certainly never do so again. Additionally, the miso soup tasted like water that was shown a picture of real miso soup.
Honestly, I’m not sure whether I’m more disgusted with the quality of the food or with how much they charged for four rolls of pure disappointment and a cup of beige water.

Really NOT good sushi which is extremely disappointing considering it was rated 4 stars on google. I am unhappy to say it was by far the worst sushi I have ever had. The rice was complete mush and no seasoning and the fish had no flavor and looked as thought it had been blended up in a food processor. I usually don’t leave bad reviews but I was very disappointed. The seaweed salad was yummy and the green tea was good but those were the only 2 good things.

Took myself on a little date here tonight, I sat by the window and watched a few K-pop videos on the television. I ordered the miso soup, shumai and sprite to start, all of which came out in a timely manner. I asked my server, Justin, to help me choose between two rolls and with his advice landed on the Wutang roll. It was tasty, a good sized roll, and had a good filling to rice ratio.

Overall the food was tasty and filling, the atmosphere was chill and the service was on point. I’ll have to start making trips here a regular thing.

Daughter and I love to try new sushi restaurants. We wanted to go down to Cary Street on a Saturday night to be able to walk around and check out some of the other stores. We had never been to Momotaro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were a tad worried since it was like 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the place and only ones the whole time we were there. We did see quite a bit of to go orders to go though. We ordered a Eel Dragon roll, eel roll, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp roll. The gentleman that waited on us was super nice and quick to help us out. Our order didn’t take overly long to get made why we’re waiting though they have a pretty cool saltwater fish tank setup for my daughter and I watch the fish for a while which was kind of fun. The decor is pretty cool, not a very large place maybe 10 tables or so and they had 1 table set up out on the sidewalk. Both my daughter and I thought the sushi was really good. I thought the quality was pretty top-notch and the size of the rules we’re pretty filling. Don’t know if it was a fluke and just a time and when we went with no one there but this place should definitely be much busier. When we venture back down to Cary Street again for sushi, I’m sure we would be stopping in.

Stopped in here a couple times. First time I got some sushi which was ok, average at best and absolutely not worth the price per portion. The second time me and a friend decided to stop in and try the pork ramen advertised on their a frame out front-not only did the waitress not even know if they had ramen available but when she asked they didnt even have pork. As if to punish us for ignoring all the red flags up until the food arrived the ramen itself tasted like they threw maruchan noodles in their miso soup, the veggies were under cooked and the chicken tasted boiled. I was genuinely insulted they were charging almost $11 for it. The staff was fantastic and the only thing saving them from a one star.

    Great place

We’ve always had a wonderful time at Momotaro. Friendly staff, albeit slightly understaffed but with a business that size, you can’t justly blame them. Fresh food, delicious rolls, great atmosphere and the lead sushi chef/owner? is always there with a genuine smile. I recommend this place to everyone.

  70. Erica Pompey 2020/06

The staff is nasty and the one time I ate from here food was sloppy and in prepared.. they also messed up my order and have yet to replace it or refund me.. do not risk your money here doing the covid-19.

This was a bizarrely bad restaurant visit. Our waitress presented us with two torn paper menus that had been written on to order from. The bar and other table in the room we were in were empty, but dirty. When the waitress returned, she poured water all over the table when pouring water for us. She left the mess without acknowledging it for us to clean up. We ordered a pot of tea and were given a cold pot of tea. When she brought the replacement, it was less than half full. She brought the miso soup I ordered then asked several times in the span of 15 minutes if I ever got my soup. Meanwhile, an agitated family of 2 from the adjacent dining area left saying that they had been waiting for an hr and ten minutes for their food. There were 6 seated booths, including our party in the entire space, so the restaurant wasn’t packed. The service was so unnervingly bad that we paid for our tea and soup and left.

  86. Olivia D 2019/07

waitress was rude and only came over for our order with room temperature water. the food was just okay but the waitress counted our money in front of us when we paid the pill and walked away without a word.

  87. Alexis Mixon 2019/07

The sushi portions were the smallest I have ever scene and did not taste right. Quite possibly the worst sushi I have had. The miso soup was good and my delivery was fast.

First visit… we always test new places with ordering Chirashi. This was excellent here… but minimal fish/protein for this dish. It included miso soup and ginger salad which was expected. A bit pricey for so little fish… but we will most likely try this location again and explore a sashimi dish next time.

  89. Md Hossain 2019/06

    Good

  90. Roy King 2019/06

The service was terrible and the food was sub par at best

  91. S McKay 2019/06

Good rolls. Good miso soup. Look forward to going back.

  92. Justina Choo 2019/06

The rice that was used was one step below mushy and was bland. The flavor of the rolls was lacking; the only way I could get any flavor out of my meal was by pairing the rolls with soy sauce and ginger. Furthermore, the roll was not rolled well and consistently threatened to fall apart. I got the dinner special for one- the miso soup was lukewarm at best and the seaweed salad was excessively oily.
The laminated menus were edited with marker and falling apart. The wait staff was very friendly but was not able to clarify something on the menu for us. The atmosphere and music was really pleasant and the wait staff very attentive.
Overall, I would not come back to this restaurant and spend more money there.

  93. Ed C. 2019/06

    Terrible dark space, poor food

  94. Marlene Sanchez 2019/06

The food is good but the portions are very small and overpriced.

  95. Sebastian Nair 2019/06

Small menu but great food, nice vibe. They have good prices on their sushi and some nice specials to choose from. Their miso soup is a little plain, without any tofu, but nothing here I’ve tried has been anything less than good. A great sushi place to go to on a budget or even when you have some good spending money.

  96. Eve Rogers 2019/04

I’m a driver for ubereats and I picked up a few orders from here. The staff was super friendly, even recommending a local bookstore around the corner. The food was ready when I arrived, so thanks for prompt and pleasant service!

  97. W_Evie Ambrosius 2019/04

Good sushi for my first time. Good service. Relaxed environment to sit down and eat your meal. Would recommend, and will be go back.

  99. brandon grimm 2019/03

Best sushi in town! Even had sea urchin in stock.

  100. Ben Ramage 2019/03

Sushi was great, but the fish tank alone makes a visit worth it

  101. Emma Foster 2019/02

This might be the worst restaurant experience I have had in Richmond. May I suggest Sticky Rice, Foo Dog, anywhere instead.

It was expensive, portions were small, my friend had uncooked chicken in her ramen (because they were out of pork for the “Pork Ramen”??), and our waitress could have acted like she cared less that we were there. We were the only people in the entire restaurant on a busy Friday night, now I see why.

  102. Karrah Avocoedo 2019/02

We popped in here for lunch on a Sunday. We were delighted with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and fantastic food. We ordered:
    Tempura Chicken bites
    Pepper Tuna Roll
    Yellow Stone Roll
    RVA Roll
    And a few drinks!

  103. Jack Miller 2019/02

Went on a Wednesday night for the happy hour with a group of 4. Took over an hour to get our rolls. Essentially no staff present.

Rice on rolls was cold, taste was bland, and the crunch was stale. Had to ask for water. Overall very sub par and won’t be going back.

Bumping up to a 4 star, because again, I really do love the food here! the chef is good and friendly. They were out of the Hana Awaka saki again, but hopefully next time they will have it. Overall, if you live nearby, it’s a good spot. It’s always quiet and the fish are great to look at. We live a short walk away, so this is still likely to remain our sushi spot.

I love this place, and it’s one of my favorites to be honest. I go here pretty often, but today I am leaving a three star review due to an odd experience I had there tonight. We had a fairly new seeming waiter, as I’d never seem him there before. I wanted to cut him some slack because he seemed like he was just new, but the man did not speak to us barely at all. Later I did catch on that he didn’t seem too fluent in english so I just tried to dismiss not being greeted or spoken to in general. Ordered hana awaka saki like we always do but then he returned to tell us they were out. Ok, that’s fine (they have never been out before) but I told him a coke would be fine instead. He leaves and then does not return for like 10 minutes. We decided what we wanted like, 2 minutes into sitting there. Did not return with my drink I ordered, but we just went ahead and ordered. Never got the coke btw but we ordered hot saki instead.

it takes another 10 minutes before our saki is brought out! and mind you, it’s pouring rain outside and there is no one else in this place so not sure why these things are taking so long.

he returns 8 minutes after our order and tells my friend (this is her first time at this place with us after we suggested it) telling my friend she cannot order the snapper by saying- “The snapper is, not so good. Can i get you something else” was very confused by that, but she said “Oh, no thank you, i like Snapper” he replies “ahh i asked him (the chef) and not so good, you sure?” at this point my friend just decides to give into what ever coercing this is and decides on the tuna instead.

maybe they were out? or the fish was bad? I dunno. I’d have been ok if they had just said they were out of it but this seemed like an underhanded way to talk my friend out of the snapper. Mind you, the tuna was $2 more so….

Once we got our food we enjoyed it as we usually do, which is why it saddens me to make this review. People remember the bad experiences they have, and I recall once before my review for this place was a shining 5 stars. I hope next time I go to my fav place I can edit this review by saying this was a one time experience, but only time will tell.

  106. Jessica Weindl 2018/11

Great sushi and a really amazing aquarium to stare at while you eat. It’s usually pretty quiet and zen compared with the other sushi place on Cary and the happy hour half off special on Wednesdays is pretty good. They’re also super friendly even when you have fussy baby.

  107. Trish Burnham 2018/10

Service was terrible by the older blonde lady! She was so rude! The food was yummy, but the portions were minuscule for the price!

  108. Marvin Bonilla 2018/10

Love the wine and sake combo

  109. Michael McAllister 2018/08

Waiting on a response as to why the total I was charged was not for my meal. All I had was a coke and shumai. 6 bucks tops and now have a charge for $24. Once I get this fixed I WILL NEVER BE BACK.

  110. Quinn V 2018/08

Small portions, high prices, low quality fish and poor service. Our waitress gave us 4 dirty glasses with tons of water spots, and insisted since they were just washed she won’t bring us new ones. I got the peppered tuna roll for $8.95 and it was tiny pieces, with rice in the center of the roll (hardly any fish, poor technique). Salmon roll didn’t have any white strips of fat in the salmon.

    First and last time going.

  111. Alexander Skinner 2018/08

I have always really enjoyed Momotaro! Just ask the chef for recommendations and enjoy.

  112. J T 2018/07

They are very friendly. The specialty rolls are where it’s at. The Sushi chef is truly an artist. Great sushi for a reasonable price!

  113. Olivia Dennehy 2018/07

My friend and I ate there on a Friday evening. The water was room temperature without even ice and the food was okay. When we went to pay, after being stared at by the waitress who came to check on us once, she came over and opened the black book we had put our cash in and counted the money in front of us after saying “everything there?” So rude and insulting. Won’t be going back

  114. Cory Pete 2018/07

My second favorite sushi spot in Richmond. The oshinko rolls and dank veggie roll are fabulous.

  115. Chuck Gallagher 2018/07

Will definitely eat here again. Good sushi!!!

Good Thai food at reasonable price And nice ambiance.

  119. Donita del Rosario 2018/04

Our server was an older lady with white hair, she was incredibly kind and very patient. Great customer service, good cheap options for all of their classic rolls, quick preparation, awesome chill house playlist. Only took 1 star off because the sushi rice was watery but the fish quality was awesome.

  120. Trip Young 2018/04

    Surprised by the sushi quality

  121. Colin Walker 2018/04

Excellent sushi. My wife and I shared an order of shumai and it was incredible. The only issue we had was unpeeled shrimp in one roll, easily remedied. Between us, we tried 6 different rolls, shumai and edamame. Absolutely a top notch place and one we intend to frequent.

  122. Christina Huther 2018/03

My favorite sushi spot in Richmond! The food here is fresh and delicious, and service is fast and friendly.

  123. John Gunst 2018/03

So friendly, so delicious. Sake and miso soup have become our go to on cold night and every time I try a new roll it becomes my favorite

  124. Daniel Squitieri 2018/01

The server warned us the food was bad. It was her first day, and she was right. Also onnoxuohs and kept telling us they were hiring. The meal sent me into a spiraling depression.

  125. Kelly Hendry Cotting 2017/11

I’m entitling this post “pregnant lady craves sushi”. Basically, I found myself battling morning sickness and food aversions and literally only wanting to eat a California roll. The good news is that even though a California roll doesn’t have raw fish and is pregnancy safe, super risk averse mommy boards and doctors and such advise that you only eat it if the chef uses a mat and knife that haven’t been used on raw fish. And like a lot of first time pregnancy people, I couldn’t strike that small, probably irrational fear from my mind. Still, I NEEDED sushi, so I went to one spot where they said they couldn’t guarantee a clean knife and mat. I walked into Momotaro hoping for the best, but feeling self conscious for asking for such a paranoid accommodation and also knowing I would likely cry if I couldn’t get some sushi! (I’m blaming it on hormones). The chef heard me making my request to the server and immediately volunteered that I could eat lots of rolls, including shrimp tempura, and that he would be happy to clean everything and change it out for me. Their menu also has all the items that do not involve raw fish starred, so its easy to navigate. It was a small, but incredibly kind gesture on his part and it meant a lot to me on a day when I needed that. They’ve permanently earned my business by choosing to handle my request gracefully and making me feel welcome. Also, the sushi was yummy and very reasonably priced.

  126. Paige Reisenfeld 2017/11

Loved the atmosphere. It was very serene and quiet and the host was the same, but welcoming and friendly.

Sushi was very good. Not cut “expertly”, but fantastic. This may be my favorite sushi place in Richmond now.

  127. David Koslow 2017/10

I want this place to be better than it is. As it stands it is a hole in the wall that smells like long forgotten cigarette smoke and the feint odor of the Sea. It doesn’t help that they have a live fish tank there. The sushi itself tastes alright although it is a little overpriced. Certainly beats Kroger. Haven’t tried any of their specialty rolls as they just plain cost too much. Can’t compare it to Carytown Sushi because I’ve never been. They look about the same; in need of a make over

  128. lenise robinson 2017/10

sushi was good and service was good. location was meh.

  129. Joseph Dobb 2017/05

Ordered a 10$ item. They didn’t take credit or debit so I offered cash. They couldnt give me change for a 20. So I had no way to purchase my for at the fault of the business.

  130. James Mitchell 2017/05

The sushi was 4 star quality and relatively cheap, but significantly better than every other nearby offering, hence the 5 stars. Significantly better than nearby options with plenty of space, only real downside is no liquor license

  131. Debbie Wilson 2017/03

You want sushi? Come here! Small place with a big selection of locally named rolls…The RVA and KATRINA rolls are fantastic

  132. Stefanie Powell 2017/01

Our favorite sushi spot in rva. The owner knows I have a gluten allergy so there is always gluten free soy sauce available and he modifies rolls so that I can eat them.

  133. Brian McBride 2016/12

Very fair prices and great sushi.

  134. Dustin Tippins 2016/12

My wife and I have been coming here for over 4 years. Sushi is consistently good, employees are nice, atmosphere is relaxing, and you never have to wait in line. We’ve tried other sushi in RVA but somehow always end up back here. It’s definitely a great low key sushi spot!

  135. Derek R. Austin 2016/11

My fiancee might disagree with me here, but momotaro is my favorite sushi restaurant in the RVA. The fish is always great and they have a good selection of rolls and sake. Plus an aquarium and friendly, fast service.

  136. Peter Corrao 2016/11

Great service and even better sushi! The spicy tuna roll and wasabi was fantastic. The sticky rice was cooked to perfection.

The avocado rolls and shrimp nigiri was excellent. I great experience.

  137. Nathan Murphey 2016/10

So went to kobe what a joke they served us warm sushi that was supposed to be cold. 15 minutes for drinks 25 minutes for salad 45 minutes then asked for check. Came here wondeful place awesome food great customer service

  138. Jennifer Lynn 2016/09

Tasted old. Was not impressed. Will not be going back. Might have had an off day. Felt out of place. Can soda was $2 a can and they ran out of them. The rolls fall apart when try to pick up.

  139. Edward Brentwood 2016/09

I buy Sushi from them at least once a week. I missed the cut off time for the lunch box by 4 min and was refused the “lunch price”. Very disrespectful towards frequent customers, and it also shows a poor quality of service. Cheap food – only during the lunch time – but at the end, not recommended at all.

  140. Tatyana Fadeeva 2015/12

I didn’t really care for the Sushi or drink selection. Good prices and nice employees though.

  141. Joni Watson 2015/11

Small place, not crowded, clean but not spotless. A little strange smell, which to me is expected in an old downtown building. We went in for half price sushi, several to choose from (spicy tuna, spicy salmon, philly, sweet potato, avocado, and a couple of others). The sushi was good (especially the eel), nothing amazing, but you can’t beat the price! $20 for 6 rolls! Just a heads up, others were correct still, no ice in the water (a little strange). And for those in the family that don’t eat sushi, not much on the menu other than sushi, just tempura shrimp and a couple of noodle bowls. A good place to go for a quick sushi fix when you don’t want to spend a fortune.

  142. Meg Gandy 2014/10

absolutely delicious. the fish was perfect–perfect texture, perfect temperature. definitely going back.

  143. Courtenay Leahman 2014/09

    Best sushi in town!

  144. Jonathan Schmiel 2014/03

Really slow. Tea pot didn’t have a top on it. They served us maki when we ordered nigiri. Tasted delicious but portions were small. For serious sushi lovers, stick with Akida for traditional feel or Osaka for modern feel. If its date night, head to Sticky and get the Godzira roll.

  145. Mike Kaplan 2014/01

Best fish in RVA. Stickyrice is a joke, Akida’s fish is no where near as fresh, and Carytown Sushi uses too much sauce. Highly recommend Momotaro for good fish and a relaxing environment. Service is excellent and efficient.

  146. James Grieco 2013/11

No-frills sushi done right. Wednesday’s happy hour is 50% off which is amazing… This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Richmond. By far the best avocado roll I’ve ever had, which is a weird thing to say.

  147. Adam Torborg 2013/05

I have eaten there on several occasions and I have always been really impressed with how good the sushi is. The rolls are some of the best I have ever had. While the restaurant is somewhat sparsely decorated, the atmosphere still feels appropriate for a bit of a diamond in the rough.

  148. Nickel Cobalt 2012/11

I’ve always had a good experience here. It can get a little warm, but it’s a great intimate spot when it’s not too busy. I thought the sushi was pretty decent, and plenty of it.

  149. Adam Parsons 2012/02

I find it mostly clean, great option for some good sushi!

  150. David Park 2011/08

Small pieces of fish. Sweet shrimp (amaebi) wasn’t very fresh. A cockroach made an appearance on the sushi bar which totally disgusted my wife so we won’t be going back.
