Edo’s Squid has delicious Italian food. Everything I have had here is perfectly executed. Be prepared to wait in line though.

  6. Ryan Johnson 2023/12

    Had a very disappointing experience.

    1. Service was poor:
    – Waitress left us mid order to go run food to another table.
    – Waitresses asked us if we were done and wanted boxes about two minutes after receiving our food.
    – Took us twenty minutes to get our check after we asked for it.

    2. Food was mid at best.
    – Its an Italian place that sells boxed over cooked pasta.
    – They also don’t tell you just how big the food is.

    3. Atmosphere was terrible.
    – They shoved way too many tables in there. The pictures on their reviews are inaccurate they have at least twice as many tables in there.
    – It is clear they are just trying to shove as many tables in there as possible. They leave people waiting in the stairs and it is definitely a fire hazard.

Overall would not go back. I think a Chili’s would be a better choice.

What started out as unique slowly turned into a lack luster experience. This was my first time so I needed some coaching from my table and the server. We were a party of 5, so we were forced to order “family style”. This was something that I personally wanted to avoid, since it’s cold and flu season and my friends can be forgetful about used utensils when having wine. Back to the “family style”, it was explained that we could order as many appetizers as we want and choose up to four entrees. This was a confusing process, the server’s explanation of the appetizers was unclear. I suggest the restaurant to consider having an explanation of their rules on the back of the menu so that there are no surprises. I personally did not enjoy this “family style” concept because my table had different desires from my own when it came to picking food items. I ended up being the person who did not get to pick an entree, which is our own problem but I can see how it’s an issue for any party of 5+. I did get to pick two appetizers, the fried squid and oysters. They were both delicious. In fact, I asked for more oysters. One note would be some sauce served with these items. One friend picked the conch and roasted red pepper with mozzarella, both were fine. Now on to the entrees. The Rockfish: VERY over seasoned, (way too salty to enjoy), and the skillet they served it on must had been extremely hot because the fish stuck to it and dried out most of the fillet. The Pork Chops: Dry and overcooked, the sauce or Demi glaze did not add much flavor for me but the white beans served with it were tasty. The Monkfish: Zero flavor and odd texture. I’ve never had monkfish before but the way it was prepared and served was odd. It was offered roasted (which is what we should had done) or in their spicy red sauce. I was not a fan. The Hanger Steak: Ordered rare but cooked medium. It’s such a huge piece of meat that you would hate to complain about the temperature so I let it go. Why complain about that when the rest of the food was unpleasant. All but one of these entrees were served with pasta, which the red sauce was not tasty and had a slight burnt taste. I recognized that flavor because I’ve done it before. You are supposed to either dump it in another pot or throw it out if you stirred the burnt stuff in.

I did not enjoy that the only light in the small apartment room was from the street light outside. I like to see what I am putting in my body and to do this would mean whipping out my phone light and annoying the entire world. What if there was a bug? Extra protein I guess? Give me a break. I truly wanted to enjoy this restaurant experience but overall, I was disappointed at every aspect. Would I try it again? I’m unsure but I definitely won’t come with a group larger than 4. Couldn’t provide pictures of our food because it was so dark in the dining area and I wasn’t going to draw an audience with flashing lights.

AMAZING food and great portions for the price. Everything we have tried has been delicious!!!

Only downsides are you need a reservation and there isn’t much standing room to wait for your table. Even with a reservation we waited over 30 minutes for our table. — food was absolutely worth the wait though! It isn’t handicap accessible and need to go up a long flight of stairs. It is a tight fit and very loud, so not a good spot for chatting.

I think this place is amazing and such a wonderful local find! I would highly recommend it!!

The food is so good, but it’s often SO salty. Whenever I eat here with folks, we all feel it the next day – for example, my fingers and toes are always swollen, which only happens after eating a lot of very salty food. It’s a shame because otherwise, the food is incredible. Favorites are the braised fennel, broccoletti di rapa, and the squid, white bean & arugula. We try to eat here less frequently specifically because the salt always gets us (we’re all in our low-mid thirties, so this isn’t typical with most food…)

This was the second time I tried Edo’s Squid. I wanted to make sure that I was correct in never wanting to come back here again. It worked. It is TOO crowded, and the food (in my opinion as a first-generation Italian whose parents were from Italy) was beyond mediocre. I think THEY think that if they serve you large portions, it will makeup for the poor taste of the food. Among me and my friends (both times) we sampled at least eight of the pastas. All were beyond mediocre. The food was also EXTREMELY salty, something that is SO TOTALLY NOT necessary when preparing Italian-type cuisine. Also, despite reservations, had to wait for 45 minutes to be seated AND another 30 minutes before the mediocre food arrived. Full disclosure…I did ask for left overs to be boxed NOT because I wanted them later but because I LOVE the takeout containers! So, if you are looking for great take out plastic containers and do not mind a crowded, loud place that serves beyond mediocre food, but has great take out containers, look no more! This Italian-American will NOT be returning.

Food was GREAT, portions were huge (like, really big, it seemed like people around us were sharing things). The only thing I could say it the seating arrangements are a little tight, but it’s also not a big space in there— it wouldn’t stop me from going back. We were a party of two on a Friday night and we didn’t have a reservation and we were able to get it, but I would recommend a reservation.

Unfortunately I have to redo my excellent review after our most recent trip to Edo’s. The service has gone way downhill. Our waitress was the rudest waitress we’ve encountered at a restaurant in a very long time. She was so nasty, that we actually skipped dessert and left. We did leave a decent tip(25%) despite her poor service but we don’t drive 3 hours round trip to be treated like that. She treated the surrounding tables the same. The food was ok but not as on point as it’s been in the past. Maybe the rude service didn’t help the taste;). We will give it another go the next time we’re in town but I hope a manager conveys to the staff that walking up to a table with an angry face “do you know what you want and rolling your eyes when they say they need more time isn’t a great approach. We had only been seated for a few minutes! It makes people feel unwelcome. That snotty hipster vibe is lame and people don’t appreciate it.

Fantastic spot, an old restaurant vibe (in a good way), food that lives up to the hype, and the staff are friendly & helpful even though they keep busy. The squid, white bean, and arugula salad has an unbelievable amount of flavor, follow that up with the braised fennel and you’ll be quite happy. Plus the price is great for the size & quality of dishes.

We thought we were entering a broom closest by the looks of the door, the place had no room, tables were literally 6” apart. You had to slide you butt cheeks along the next table to get in and sit. The appetizer, calamari had no dipping sauce with it, the bread was cold and no seasoning in the oil, and food was just ok. We have had much better meals and atmosphere at much cheaper prices elsewhere. The wine wasn’t even in a a wine glass it was in a votive cup.

This is for my poc’s and white allies – I took my dad out to eat here for his birthday. He was really excited to try this place because he heard about how delicious the food is & how great the service is. He works in the restaurant industry and strives to find good quality restaurants that treat all of their customers equally. We were the only black people in the restaurant and our table was treated like an afterthought. We were trying to think positively (as the restaurant was very busy), but the final straw was seeing our server take her time to box the table behind us’s food (took it to the back and everything) while she just dropped our to-go boxes off at the table for us to do ourselves. I enjoyed my meal, but will not be returning. We paid for quality food AND service. Just not worth the money.

Our reservation was for 7:45 pm on a Friday evening. We’ve been to Edo’s many, many times over the past many years, so we expect to have to wait for a table even with a reservation. But our wait was 45 minutes. The staff had an arrogance to their attitude that evening, so no apologies, no status updates, nothing from them. After we were seated, it took another 10 minutes to be greeted by our server. We were ready to order upon being seated, so once our server came, we gave our order. Another 45 minutes to get our food. Again, no apologies, no status, nothing. When we asked about our food we were given a shrug of the shoulder with an answer of “it’ll be here when it’s ready”. As much as I enjoy the food at Edo’s, that will be my last visit there.

Immensely enjoyed the food and can’t wait to go back. Very inconspicuous place, if you’re not paying attention, you’ll walk right by it. Even the entry is simply a staircase until you get upstairs. First impression, place is fairly small, but some of the seating is cramped. Your neighbors are so close, you’ll feel like they’re part of your party. Place will get loud when full. Don’t expect a quiet dinner. But the food.. Amazing!!

Portions aren’t only large enough to share, but you’ll have plenty for a second or third meal. I’m hoping they won’t have the Spaghetti and Crab next time on the menu so I can try something else, because I’ll be tempted to get it again. Can’t wait to make my next reservation.

Delicious group birthday dinner! Our party was large enough to require family style service – order any apps, but we had a max entree limit (for us, 4 max entrees), any of which could be multiplied to fit the needs of the group. So! For apps, we got the braised fennel (a must!!!!!), roasted peppers with fresh mozz, duck salad, and broccoli rabe. For entrees, we got the crab spaghetti (double order), eggplant parm (double order), rockfish special, and broccolini ricotta pasta. Tiramisu and cannoli for dessert. Everything was so delicious, we couldn’t stop dancing in happiness! Thank you!

Great food. Our waitress was amazing. I had shrimp fra diavlo & husband had mixed seafood. I would have liked my entree to have a little more sauce & wish more bread was served when entrees arrived. The picture is a bit deceiving bc the tables are literally inches apart.

Extremely delicious dishes, generous sizes, and great prices considering the aforementioned qualities. I loved this place because it was unpretentious and a wonderful experience. The ambiance was also lively, friendly, enjoyable. I ducked a star because service was slow and they were distracted all the time. I get that it was busy but they just didn’t click with the rest. Although, worth mentioning, we did get seated on a Friday night as walk ins. Still highly recommend going. We ordered the arugula salad, the mussels with white sauce, and squid napoletana. Also great selection of wines, we chose a bottle of 100% sangiovese, montepulciano from 2018 because why not? Price was fair for the quality.

This place is way overhyped for no reason. The positives – good rockfish and squid appetizer. The negatives – the service (the waitress first accidentally gave us the appetizer the table next to us ordered and then gave us the wrong squid appetizer that she had put in wrong), the pasta (we had the broccoli raab, sausage and ricotta and it was super bland and underwhelming), the bread (stale, cold, and hard), and how crowded it is (which would be okay if the food was good). I will say they comped us the squid appetizer though, which we appreciated since we didn’t get the correct appetizer until halfway through our entree course (over an hour after we sat).

When you’re here you better have brought your appetite because let me tell you their dishes are delicious! This place almost prides itself on not being a pretentious restaurant in the heart of VCU country with its precarious old carpeted stairwell, bathroom that looks to have once been a broom closet, no decor except for the bottles of wine adorning it’s back wall and wine served in children-sized glass cups. It’s true Italian as you will get here in VA if you ask me. We took full advantage of coming in early and smorgasbord several dishes. Rockfish was beautifully cooked with a bit of a pepper spice seared on top to keep you awake. The penne perfectly al dente. Squid bean arugula had surprising flavor and texture – well worth eating. Mozzarella was nothing I had before. Like eating good chocolate, you never want to go back! Lastly v the tiramisu hit this joy ride out of the park – the balance of cream to sponge all surfing on an espresso liqueur wave that left all of us speechless and begging for more. Who knew that the such a stairway lead to food heaven!

You can’t get over how adorable the venue is. Appears like a broom closet from the outside, but inside is cozy and rustic! If you can get a window table, try to swing it, the view is so nice!!
The food used to be mind-blowing and is definitely not the same as pre-Covid, but it’s certainly still a very good option for what’s around!

Stopped in about 5 pm first time ever after an afternoon at the Fine Arts Museum. Greeted enthusiastically by Holly who welcomed us. She brought us to a table by the windows, and within 30 minutes the place was packed. Holly provided menu information, specials and took our beverage order. Vanessa soon came by to serve us and she was prompt, professional and very nice. The food was delicious, servings very generous, and Holly circled back to offer desert options. Edo’s is a place that holds great memories, as a place to gather w/good friends to eat, @ our own pace, drink, the red table wine is Great & goes w/everything, & enjoy the food. I’ve always been in a group of @ least 7 & in that case, Family dinning is the experience. From apps to dessert, you can’t go wrong. I highly advise a reservation as this place is always SRO & the wait can be long. This is the kind of place to just sit, eat, drink & be Happy.

Absolutely the second or third best place in Richmond, second to none in terms of quality. The place feels very much like something you would find in a basement in Greenwich Village up in New York, with the variable service (although not as much these days), dim lighting, crowded atmosphere, and entrance that makes you think you’re about to accidentally enter somebody’s home.

  96. Eugene Kovshilovsky 2023/01

Walking through a non descriptive door to go upstairs takes you to an upstairs that reminds you of maybe a college apartment you and your roommate have stayed in years past or an authentic little Italian restaurant somewhere in Italy. It’s a decent size hall with a bar to the left with nothing separating any of it. You immediately know that this place is no frills place where people come for the best Italian food at relatively decent prices. Funny enough, one of their best dinner items on the menu was actually Ukrainian borscht as it had a great beef taste and just the right amount of sweetness. The other amazing dish was the tiramisu because it tasted IMHO as all tiramisu should, without a huge amount of whipped cream and with a nice amount of soaked cake to where it feels juicy and delicious. The steamed mussels were great as well but I am sure each person can find something on the menu that will fit their personal taste.

Terrible service! Waited an hour and 20 min for our food and the waitress didn’t stop at the table once after she took our order. Finally part of our tables food arrived, ended up canceling mine so we could catch our show. 5:30pm reservation ended up leaving at 7:00pm without eating. Watched as waitresses’s would take used breadbaskets off customer tables stack them back on the bread counter without changing the cloth napkin and send them back out to another table. Don’t waste your time. Party of 4 and paid $215 for three entrees and a bottle of wine since mine never made it out. The rest of our table got to enjoy reheated microwave food when they got home.

  103. Wayne Stone 2022/12

Very very nice little spot in RVA. They share the billboard with another restaurant so you have to pay attention to find the place . But once you do you are in for a treat. Frendly staff, clean atmosphere and the food is great.

Overall it’s a great Italian restaurant and we really liked it, the only thing that I did not like about was too much seasoning on some of the dishes. The one that I ordered had too much garlic. Their fried squid appetizer was amazing and highly recommended. Their portion size is huge and it can easily fill two people per dish.

A small restaurant that sits on the 2nd floor with an entrance that makes you think you’re walking out of a maintenance closet. Very unassuming. Don’t let it fool you though, as soon as you walk in it has a very cozy and classic feel.
Wife and I didn’t have to wait long to be seated and the servers were very attentive. I would highly recommend making reservations, the room was practically filled at 630pm on a Monday evening. I was able to make a reso after 3pm the same day.

Meal portions are super generous, expect to take to-go if ordering individually. Fried squid was deliciously seasoned and texture was on point.
The Sausage, Ricotta, Broccoli rabe w/ penne was good and flavorful, was only a little disappointed that it came out just luke warm. Staff was quick to fix and to my surprise brought out a freshly made plate.
Wife got the Mixed Seafood pasta. Big bowl of pasta in a light, fresh tomato sauce with a layer of mixed seafood on top. Seafood pasta done right!

Although the setting was intimate, it was a little bit too intimate with the tables for 2s sitting close together like a setting for 4. But I guess that’s the charm.

Overall, a definite must try! We hope to go again and try the many more options on the menu.

Visiting from out of town so not sure on how things go at this particular restaurant. Looked online for Italian cuisine in downtown Richmond and Edo’s looked like a great choice until I called the hostess. The website says call to make reservations after 5 pm. I called at 6:20 p.m. Hostess told me to call back because the staff was in the middle of service; unacceptable.. If a restaurant is open then it’s always in service. BTW I hate posting bad reviews but this was a bit much and I had a feeling this young lady knew she made a service mistake by answering the call in this way but she rode with it so here we are. I also worked in the industry for 25 years as a server, assistant manager and manager.

Extremely busy hole in the wall restaurant. I was lucky to snag a bar spot. Monday is an especially busy night as many other restaurants are closed. I had the Seafood Pasta and it was perfect. Overflowing with delicious clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, and fish. The broth was a rich seafood explosion, and the pasta was great as well. Not sure if they make it in-house, but either way no complaints. All in all a fantastic well rounded dish, and plenty of it. I’ll be coming back next time I’m in Richmond which I hope is soon. Al was a true professional behind the bar, thanks Edo’s.

The food was amazing. We had duck breast, steak, carbonara, and spicy shrimp spaghetti. The white bean arugula appetizer is great. It’s a small restaurant and gets loud and very packed.

  125. H P 2022/09

Fun place with a hip vibe. Very hard to get a table here. Small place but very good Italian food. Keep an eye on the bar a as most people seem to be sitting at the bar waiting for a table. We were able to grab a seat at the bar when it vacated and eat dinner at the bar. The place is a little bit noisy but it has a interesting vibe. Worth trying out when you’re in the area

A Richmond treasure. You think you are entering a scruffy broom closet but after you walk up the steps it’s a low key cosy place. It has a family, student and neighborhood clientele. Italian cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and fish, it has well prepared food with generous portions and good service.

Perfection! Amazing everything! Love the ambiance, love the service (they’re very busy, they’re listening to everything you say, trust me and them!).The broccoli rabe pasta with ricotta is a big favorite. Tiramisu is freakishly good. All of the antipasti dishes are worth trying. 10/10

One of the BEST places to eat in the city and I would even say Virginia! Servers are hilarious, attentive, and fast paced! Workers are treated and paid fairly which makes the moral enjoyment of the establishment fantastic! I’ve even heard local and world wide celebrities make sure to take their time to reserve a table for Edo’s which is no tall tale! Pricey, but for the experience you will share with yourself or loved ones it is worth every penny. Creative new items are added every few weeks with care and love in every mouthful. Definitely a must have of the city!

Everyone said this place is great so we decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. You get a ton of food with each order.

Pictured are the crab meat spaghetti and the fried squid both were great. Also ordered the brocoleta which was ok but I am more into crunchier vegetables than soggy. Regardless I’d come again

Fun old-school Italian spot with great cooking, generous portions and efficient, friendly service. We tried a number of different plates, fried squid, squid with beans and arugula for starters. Then for the mains: veal scallopini, polenta, beans and cotechini, and several pasta dishes. It was more than we could eat so we ended up bringing a lot home, but all very tasty. The restaurant has a GREAT atmosphere. Will definitely visit again when back in town.

Worst Customer service and Service ever.

Made a change to a reservation with 2.5 notice before they opened due to a surprise homecoming and was told over the phone “oh, that isn’t gonna work.” When I explained it was an extra child seat was told “it’ll be a tight fit but we can make it work.”

Showed up 8 minutes early and was accosted by the pretentious host. Smug and snarky remarks of being early. The idea being I wanted to ensure things were OK. Was told “it is going to be awhile since you added 1 extra seat.” Then told “you can’t wait here.” “You can’t wait at the bar.” “You need to wait outside.” “You might as well wait in your car and we will call you when you can comeback.”

I’ve eaten here before and the food is ok, but not worth being looked down and talked to like I asked for the world. Your service and understanding is lacking and with any establishment the word gets around.

Canceled the reservation and left. They will not get a dime of my money ever again.

  140. John Duke 2022/07

Excellent Italian flavors with creative menu. Garlic lovers will be happy. Dishes can be ordered family style and shared. Fried calamari is the best I have had. Can be crowded and noisy. Be prepared to bring home leftovers.

Ok food, but service was nonexistent. The server took a disliking to our table almost right away. Maybe we didn’t fit into the type of clientele that usually frequented the restaurant. First time visit! Entrance to the place can be deceiving. It feels like you are in the wrong place while walking upstairs to the 2nd floor. Once you open the door, it’s a different vibe. The pictures tells it all. Like my son say, “I haven’t had a great meal for a long time.” Trust me, you will not be disappointed. PS, you need to order the tiramisu before you leave.

I am not the type to leave reviews at all, But the staff at Edos Squid are some of the rudest people I’ve experienced in a restaurant setting. The food was just okay. Tables were so crowded together. It was not a pleasant time at all. And saw the wait staff be mean to other customers. It made me sad that I had already ordered my food.

  148. Eric L 2022/06

If I could give only one 6 star restaurant review, it would go to Edo Squid. The Italian pasta and seafood is unparalleled. We have eaten Italian in the North End, NYC, SF and multiple cities in Italy. Edo Squid is at the top of the list. It’s hard to describe the experience. It’s a casual crowded setting, upstairs in an eclectic part of the city. Go if you have the chance. You won’t be disappointed.

  149. Dominic Carpin 2022/06

It’s the closest you’ll ever get to Mamma Zu, which is sad in a way. The food here is exceptional. Eggplant Parmesan, softshells, fried oysters, broccoletti, “try the veal Mike, it’s the best in the city”. The rockfish and tuna steak are culinary things of beauty. Generous cocktails. Good wine list. You can’t go wrong. The pasta dishes have heaping piles of epic proportion. Keep in mind, this place is LOUD, and is almost always crowded. Tons of festive energy going on all around you. Definitely a top Richmond dining destination. Mangiare!

  150. David Koslow 2022/06

Exemplary. It has been around forever for a reason. I thought I wouldn’t find a restaurant pasta that was good at all, all my old favorites had gone under. Edo’s has the best pasta I’ve had in a long time. Get the puttanesca. It’ll get you making great noises at the table.

  151. Forrest Lloyd 2022/06

I always have a fantastic experience here. The atmosphere makes me feel as though I were in little Italy in NYC. The place may seem chaotic but I feel that only adds to the charm. However, be forewarned, show up on time for your reservation but be prepared to wait ~15-30 minutes. I love this place and will continue to frequent it as often as I can.

The first time I ate here was in 1998. My fiancé and I went with a few friends for her birthday last night and everything is still absolutely amazing! Not to take away from the food at all, but the absolute best thing about this restaurant is that they have a big framed poster of Spagett next to the restrooms!!!

We were very disappointed by our first experience there with my boyfriend. We asked for recommendations and we got lukewarm advice from the waitress. We ask questions she wasn’t really interested in helping us. The pasta dish with shrimp was not well dressed I had looked like someone through six shrimp on it and a little garlic and have no flavor.I don’t know if we ordered the wrong dish but I walked away completely disappointment. The veal masala had a nice sauce. And I have to admit part of the disappointment was the terrible service we got cannot get the waitresses attention for assistance we sat in for about 20 minutes I even tried to stop her several times. Don’t see what people see in this place!

Tables are right up on each other, if you turn you are breathing on someone elses food. The food was undercooked and inedible. Carbonara is supposed to be an easy dish not sure how you can mess that up. I’ve had carbonara from lots of places but never have I smelled or tasted one that was reminiscent of fresh throw up. The server did take one order off the bill but we paid $27 for two bites of disgusting food.

We’ve been going to this place for a long time because like the food, service always been a bit questionable, to put lightly. Highly disappointing this evening when we came across town to eat there after confirming hours on Google were to 10 PM, walked up the stairs at five till nine, and waitress tells my wife and I we couldn’t sit because they “made the call“ to close early this evening. Explained to her hey it’s not even nine we’re longtime customers, just drove a ways, really like to sit just two of us can you squeeze us in, “no sorry guys“. We won’t be back or recommending anymore, service has gone too far south. Not charming guys, obnoxious!

The menu can be a little confusing but just think family style with the dishes, the portions are pretty large and easy to share with the table. Edo’s was so so good. My fiancé and I went for an anniversary dinner and had just the perfect experience with our meal. We got the fried squid (I would recommend 2-3 times as much lemon as they give but we are fiends for citrus so that’s more of a preference thing), the white bean and arugula salad was also delicious, every bean was perfectly cooked. We also shared a plate of the puttanesca, so good, great level of spice and Al dente pasta. We also shared a bottle of wine, and the whole meal came out to just $90. We were honestly surprised it wasn’t more expensive considering how large the portions are. Definitely already want to come back and try more menu items.

Great food and reasonable price! The seafood pastas are hard to beat. And I am almost shocked to find the tab at end of night is more or less what I expected, which has increasingly been hard to come by these days. Quality and value is excellent! Only knock was the tight space, which maybe part of the appeal, and why they are able to keep price in check, or just simply great fanfare. Still a five star mention in my list.

I’ve been hearing about Edo’s Squid for a couple years but this was my first time there. Was surprised to see it on the second floor, but that didn’t matter. We were there on a crowded Saturday night (with reservations, and I wouldn’t have expected to be able to just walk in, at least not that night). It’s not a large room and was packed to the gills with diners, but the staff was cheerful and helpful. The only negative for me (not sure how they could do better) was the line of people, apparently waiting for tables, lining the wall by the door, and the many-people-deep crowd at the bar, which gave us a feeling of claustrophobia. Having the bar right at the entry door seemed to compound the issue. It was also difficult to see the extensive specials list, put on a chalkboard on one wall that we couldn’t see from our table. The waitress could not (or would not) list all the specials, and just said that people usually just take a picture of it and then look at it, but I was not ready to take photos of the diners under the menus while they stared at me. They should have a better way of announcing the specials. The food was good, with a number of nice squid appetizers and entrees on the regular menu, which was good for this cephalod-lover. I try not to eat pasta entrees, so that part of the menu, although having a lot of choices, did not interest me, unfortunately.

  189. Ashlee Sawyer 2021/09

Absolutely delicious IF you can get them to answer the phone, which has seemed nearly impossible for the past few months. Sadly, these days, I’ve had to settle for food from other places every 2 out of 3 times or so.

    Food: 3 stars. Decent pastas.
Value: 5 stars. Huge portion size, each plate of pasta can easily feed 2.

Separately on a COVID safety note, it was packed inside, diners elbow to elbow. It was a bit concerning given the high case rate in the county and the Delta variant. Staff also had no masks on. Looking back, we should have turned around. I understand there are no dining restrictions in Richmond, but being this densely packed is a bit scary during this point in the pandemic. Cautious diners beware.

They do not know how to make Carbonara. Many Democrats are leaving Richmond. Cut back on the vampire level of garlic on your dishes.

Such a classic Richmond haunt! Locals know that the somewhat dingy, carpeted steep stairwell leads to this cozy, intimate, surprisingly elegant setting. This romantic restaurant carries some of the best Italian food in Richmond- the dishes are not overly complex and not the typically Italian dishes that one might come to expect- they’re just extremely well done and gratifying. Get the fennel appetizer-even if fennel doesn’t call your name, you’ll be glad to have the creamy cheesy broth it’s braised in. The calamari was the best I’ve ever had, crispy and fresh and so good it didn’t need sauce accompaniment. My favorite pasta so far is the shrimp, kale, pine nut spaghetti.

I would say one of the best dinners I have had in the Richmond area.

Atmosphere: loved the upstairs location and the brick walls gave the restaurant a unique feel. There wasn’t an open seat in the place and I can see why. The place did have a energetic noise, but I loved it. Made me think of some of the fun Italian places in NYC.

Service: Was perfect. When we got in we had a small 5 min wait and the bartender was aware enough to ask if we wanted a drink. Bonnie was very knowledgeable about the food and wines and made great selections. She was also able to engage with the table to make it a fun experience vs just taking our order and coming back like some servers do.

Food: wow… the what bean, squid and arugula salad app was amazing with the perfect amount of acidity, we had the soft shell crabs to split as an appetizers witch was also very well cooked and light. I’d also recommend the fired oysters. For dinner after trying the tuna, halibut and eggplant which I loved the taste of I would have to say that I would not have traded my selection. The veal scalopine masala (sweet sauce). The dinner ended (unfortunately) but before we went, I tried the tiramisu which was again very well done. The one positive of leaving is that there was plenty of leftovers.

Been going to Edo’s since high school and it’s always so dependably and consistently good. I usually make a reservation- it’s always busy but easy to get a seat if you can plan a little ahead. Its sweet to go with a couple other people and order food and wine family style. I love edo’s

Food was pretty good. Had a table for 12 reserved and we were seated immediately. Multiple groups waited awkwardly around to sit. Very loud and no elbow room.

Hidden gem! It’s a must go to in Richmond. I can’t get enough of the broccoli rabe and fried squid. I take everyone that’s visits here! They definitely know how to cook and make the best combinations of flavor I’m each meal. The staff so friendly and welcoming. It can be noisy when busy but the food is so good it doesn’t matter!

I noticed many others have similar comments regarding the wait staff. I don’t know if the owner, Ed Vasaio, simply does not read the reviews or does not care. We had a reservation for 4 at 615 pm. Except for the veal scallopini, which was veal at the bottom of a plate filled with over an inch of oil and lemon (really bad), the food was good. The waiter however was the real problem. He was rude from start to finish. Asked about a cocktail and instead of saying we don’t have juices he repeated twice that they had vodka and gin. Asked about decaf at end of meal and instead of saying we don’t have decaf he said we have very strong coffee. So we chatted for a while after paying the check and he came over and asked us to leave at 8 pm because they had a line of people waiting to be seated. We are in our 60’s and never in our life have we been kicked out of a restaurant. Our guests were in their 20’s and had noted how belligerent this older waiter was. He should not be in the people service industry. Even though this restaurant is extremely popular you must have pleasant and helpful waitstaff who treat guests with respect

  228. Campbell Chatterjea 2020/10

While on a few occasions dining at this establishment i was not taken care of properly by the wait-staff overall the service has been adequate. But the service isn’t why i’m giving the place 4 stars, the food is what it makes it a fruitfully memorable experience. Granted i never was fortunate enough to bring a hot date there, but i did enjoy the food enough that i even have eaten there alone on several occasions. 🙂 thats life c’est la vie. DEFO TRY IT OUT

  229. Sarah Hardin 2020/10

Though we enjoyed the food, the service is absolutely terrible. We were told we weren’t allowed to make a reservation if our party was smaller than 8 people. However, there were several parties of 2 that claimed they had reservations, so we ended up waiting about 2 hours for a table (people who came in after us got tables…even one person just tipped the manager and was able to push through the rest of the line). That led us to believe that it really just depends on the mood of the staff or the person who answered the phone if you’d get a reservation or not.

This was my second experience here…and really, I won’t be back. I was embarrassed that I had suggested this place to my company. The manager was super rude to us during our 2 hour wait…just a poor experience overall. Once we were sat, we were rushed out after our entree was finished.

  230. Geoff 2020/10

My favorite pasta in the world, garlic and olive oil with broccoli rab and Parmesan! Very very small venue, I would never go there without making reservations. My only complaints are they don’t have sweet tea and some of the staff don’t seem too friendly. Edos is on my top 10 favorite restaurants

  233. M Catalla 2020/09

I was told this was a local gem. If I hadn’t been told it was great, I may have been turned off by my early experience.

To access the restaurant you have to walk up a flight of stairs, which is a little dark, dirty and dated. But once you enter the door you’ll find it is one big open room, nothing fancy but it is inviting and quaint.

The menu gave no description of the food. I had to ask the waitress to explain what some of the dishes were. She seemed to get a little frustrated so some items I tried to Google.

The food was good. My friend had to send hers back as it was smothered in red pepper flakes (which the waitress did not mention when we asked what was in that dish, which we had stated we didn’t like hot/spicy dishes).

The lunch portions were very generous. My friend and I shared the salad, which was still plenty. We should have shared an entree too as it was quite a bit of food, so you do get your money’s worth.

IMO the best/most authentic in town. Fra diavolo is amazing, and huge portions. Broccoli rabe is excellent, probably the best thing on the menu. Tiramisu is great. Only complaint would be that the pasta is nowhere close to al dente, for those who like it that way.

  239. Hank Bowry 2020/07

  242. Jessica Hamway 2020/06

Dark, dingy stairs. Long wait time. Hurried staff. Tables closely packed together. You are nothing special here, but that doesn’t matter. They know you will be back for more because they make the best pasta in Richmond. Every selection our first visit was so good, we haven’t deviated (mussels and squid appetizers with broc rabe pasta, hold the ricotta on mine). I’m an addict now and get cravings periodically where going to Edo’s is non-negotiable. Is it the pine nuts? Extra garlic? I’m not sure but I’ll be there when doors open so my tum doesn’t have long to wait.

  243. Aja Jones 2020/05

  248. Matthew Rathbun 2020/03

Way underpriced for what you get! My daughter and I were looking to catch a quick bite before the symphony at the Alistra and this place came up in reviews. It’s only about a 9 minute walk from the theater.

Admittedly, we weren’t sure we were in the right place when open the door and see a sketchy looking walk-up you assume you’re going to the employee entrance of the restaurant that’s downstairs. We were going to pass based on the entrance until we saw happy faces coming out.

I’m glad we went up that sketchy walk-up. It’s a single room restaurant, with moderate bar and you can see into the alley kitchen from the dining area, but those quirky things make it charming.

The servers were fantastic and the menu is simple. The food was incredibly good and I especially liked the steamed muscles. The portions are very large for lunch and the price was much lower than I had anticipated.

It is a small area and were literally sitting side-by-side with other diners, so if you’re looking for a quiet restaurant to have a private conversation, this isn’t it. However, everyone we sat near was pleasant and happy.

Mediocre food at best. Rude staff, you’ll wait a long time even with reservations, not worth it

  255. Angela Armstrong 2020/02

The food was most excellent! Finding the place, or rather, knowing we were entering the correct place, was a little tricky, and even on a Wednesday night, holding a conversation was challenging because of the noise level from so many patrons in a small space with such tight seating. Waitstaff was attentive and polite. The atmosphere may come as a shock to first timers with no warning, or someone looking for a more intimate dining experience, but the food was amazing.

  256. Kenneth Atkins 2020/01

This is the kind of restaurant you wish to have in every town you visit. Unfortunately, something so good cannot be found in every town yo go. Food is great, menu is splendid. It is like eating at a relative’s house in Italy.

  266. Ben Hurley Scarbro 2019/12

My ONLY “problem” with this amazing spot: the noise. And they’ve tried to fix it. But if the pace is worth going to, it’ll be crowded and Edo’s Squid is worth going to.

Ive only ever been with 5+ people so we always do family style and get the hanger steak, and fried oysters, etcs.

Absolutely worth traveling across the city for. Parking can be tricky but head to one of the side streets.

This is easily and hands down the best Italian restaurant in the area. The atmosphere is cozy and at night down right romantic. The food is great, the mussles marinara is the best I have ever had. The serving sizes are massive so expect to bring your dinner home with you.

The only downside is the staff, they are respectful enough but since the place is so busy they are very short with you, bordering on being annoyed that you are there, the waiters are the same. I would suggest to management hire a few more waiters and possibly one more chef to take the pressure off the staff but I would still recommend going!

  280. William F. 2019/10

There are very few options aside from pasta. I wanted to order a salad, but the only dressing available was either straight olive oil or olive oil and balsamic vinegar, neither of which sound good to me. I ordered the broccoli rabe dish thinking it would have more veggies but it was mainly pasta with a little veggie in it. The pasta was fine but it was just like any other pasta. If you like pasta I guess this place will suit you. I personally think they need more options. The squid appetizer was quite good though, and the fried oysters were okay. The rockfish was great but the only side available with it was pasta….. not exactly a great choice when everything else has to come with pasta. I think they need to get a little more creative.

  281. Robert Costa 2019/10

All Hype. This dingy upstairs old trap apartment gives the nice feeling of “ we could really care less about you. In fact, You should be so lucky to eat here” The door above the bottom of the grease stained stairs, is a bathroom door. light enough to rip off the wall with ease, and inches within crashing into a table. Not convinced they hate you? The table layout only reinforces the statement. You like elbow room? Not here.. Wanna see up some greasy stairs at night as you walk up them? Nope. Want to be greeted as you walk through this, weird front door upstairs? No, stand there. Like a jerk..with a reservation. They won’t say anything. At least have a suitable restaurant to eat in thats clean. Overall lacked in cleanliness. This old building should not be a eating establishment.

  283. Patricia Moore 2019/09

If you can find the door and make it up the narrow staircase, your meal will be well worth it. Their fried oysters starter is one of my favorite dishes in the city. Not sure what makes them so delicious (maybe the breading) but they are heavenly. Their pasta dishes are also fantastic, as well as their fish. This is a Richmond staple and it’s obvious why.

  286. Anna Kelbert 2019/09

The place has a nice ambiance. I ordered fish from today’s specials that was really high quality. Unfortunately it was covered in black pepper to an extent that I couldn’t eat it. The server never mentioned the pepper when I ordered… it was also super salty. I ordered a veggie dish that was salty, too… like, 6 times more salt than comfortable. As well as overdone. Not sure what this was, looks like a nice place but I couldn’t enjoy a thing.

Calamari cooked to crispy perfection, Italian food was incredible, atmosphere was unique. However, the seating floor is small and crowds together too many people, so it can get loud at dinner time. I took someone on a date here and found myself saying ‘what?’ a few times, leaning in trying to hear better, and eventually giving up and smiling, nodding, and hoping it wasn’t a question.

  299. Tyler Ayers 2019/07

Don’t let the looks fool you, some of the best food in Richmond. The specials are on a poster board on the wall to try something new but their pasta and sauces are always delicious. Came to Edo’s after a long roadtrip back home. One of my cousin’s had found it on Yelp and had fairly good reviews. I had decided early on what I was ordering for dinner, arugula salad and pasta carbonara. Unfortunately, they were out of arugula salad. They were also out of other items on their menu. But I ended up getting their mixed greens salad which was fine. The pasta carbonara was delicious. HUGE PORTIONS. Definitely able to share a plate with two people. Someone else from my table ordered a penne pasta with sausage that was also very delicious, not too saucy. I would definitely recommend this place to others when in the Richmond area.

Not worth the hype or wait. You’ll walk up a severely dated, dingy, and narrow staircase to an overcrowded room. You’ll stand around awkwardly watching others eat for 30 minutes to an hour, maybe a bit less if you made a reservation. Once you are seated, you’ll be talked down to like they are doing you a favor. Entrees were the one decent aspect of our experience. My wife had the carbonara and I the squid, which was tasty. We asked for a tiramisu to go, but it was very mediocre. I don’t see why the glowing reviews. Honestly, Costco’s tiramisu is much better. Overall, not worth the 2+ hours affair again.

Un buen lugar para comer espagueti!! Buena atención… Algo ocupado algunas veces y la comida demora en salir.

    Exquisite food, lovely ambiance.

Best food ever…. no place to seat

  319. daniel molina 2019/05

I’ve tried many a steak across the states, and this has by far my favorite. Whenever it’s time to celebrate, I do it here.

  320. David Glick 2019/05

This is currently my favorite place for Italian food in Richmond. The whole experience is top notch (as long as you have a reservation, go early, leave extra time for parking)

  321. Matthew Fehrs 2019/05

The stairway up is unassuming (to say the least), but the restaurant is legitimately great. From antipasta through the main course to the dessert, the food was uniformly excellent. Parking is frustrating around VCU, but that is hardly the restaurant’s fault.

  322. Gunnar Larson 2019/05

    Fast and courteous service.

  323. Stefan Stefan 2019/05

Very fresh seafood in an authentic Italian way. When yiu get there, yrs, yiu go through thebgkass door and up some stairs like yiu are going into a storage area but yiu find yourself in a vibrant and tasty dining spot. A great find.

  324. ava browne 2019/05

Some of the best food in the area, be sure to make a reservation as it gets very busy. 100% my favorite restaurant – recommend the white bean and arugula salad and the fried calamari is perfect!

  325. Jillian 2019/04

    Favorite restaurant in RVA

  328. Lissa Searfoss 2019/04

The food was fabulous. The fried oysters are the best!

  329. David Stewart (Davy) 2019/04

I love this place me and my wife had the quail it was phenomenal and the fried oysters were the best I have ever had

  330. James Goodwillie 2019/04

Just another “this is the best Italian food in Richmond” post. Everything here is delicious. Super small space and often crowded but the food is 100% worth it.

  331. Cox Joseph 2019/04

I would give it a two star but I liked the way the hostess handled the busy back to school dinner crowd. When we asked our waitress if she could check to see if it was possible to speed up our appetizer order, (people who came in and ordered after us already received their meal) she replied with, “oh, why? Do you like need to be somewhere or something?!”… Furthermore, when asked about the Richmond hefty food tax and googling articles about it, she walked by and snidely remarked, “oh, do you finally believe me now that the tax is as high as it is?”…

I’ve been going to Edo’s since they opened. They’ve changed for the better over the years.

The food is outstanding. I can’t recommend the broccoli rabe, with penne and cheese enough. And their fried squid (no calamari here!) is the best I’ve ever had, lightly battered and tender. No sauce needed.

They have always been, and always will be popular. So you will probably be in for a wait if you go at peak times. However, one change they’ve made is allowing reservations, which are highly recommended.

Their service was questionable in the beginning. More like European servers than what we are used to. But the last time I went in, everyone was so nice. I was greatly surprised.

The seating is the same, although I not only don’t mind it, but enjoy the crowded dining room. If you want a quiet, intimate evening, this is not your restaurant. It’s noisy, busy and tables are very close together.

Overall, Edo’s is one of my all time favorite restaurants!

  333. Nicole Davis 2019/04

Fun atmosphere, lively, Not a large restaurant, the food was excellent and the variety gave everyone something to choose. The calamari was incredible. Nice choice of wines and liquor. Because of the size the noise level is higher then quiet but not at all a problem. It was very busy when we were there but the service was fine. The food was as good as you would expect from a fine New York City restaurant. We will definitely return on our next trip to Richmond.

  334. PB FISHING 2019/04

Always the best food in town, never been disappointed.

  335. Ben Dalling 2019/04

I loved this spot! Simple, no frills, nice staff, great food!!

  336. Pebbles Santiago 2019/04

Staff was friendly and helpful, food was delicious and atmosphere enjoyable. Will definitely go back.

  337. Pat Rogers 2019/04

Why does Edo get the squid? I’d like just for once, the squid to be mine. With that rant out of my system, Edo’s is a great place. Funky entrance, rustic, new york-ish atmosphere, (Brooklyn, not Midtown) Interesting, flavorful food, reasonable pricing. I’ll go back.

  338. Yuri Kim 2019/04

I’ve had their food twice now and the food is delicious and consistent. If you don’t like your noodles al dente then this is not the place for you. Some of the dishes here are a little too al dente but the flavor is always there. I would recommend the Seafood pasta which is more like a Seafood soup with noodles. Only thing I don’t like is that there’s only street parking.

  339. patrick pankratz 2019/04

On one hand the food here is great. On the other hand the service is very mismanaged. You can tell they should be in a bigger space and that they need to be more organized. I walked in with my SO and they told us it would be a 30 min wait. We ended up waiting 2 hrs before we left. We thought the tables they were clearing would be for us but then people with reservations would come in. They should have taken into account the amount of reservations when telling us the wait time. While this was going on the staff were too busy to help and we were given very elusive answers on how much longer it would be.

  340. Laura Maher 2019/04

Super unimpressive. Walk up a poorly-marked flight of dirty stairs to a 1-room, tiny, loud restaurant. Incredibly rude, hurried wait staff. The only thing on the menu (minus a very few exceptions) is differently prepared pasta for high prices. Noodles really didn’t taste homemade to me. Sauce was okay; nothing revolutionary. I truly think that if it wasn’t one of the few sit down restaurants within walking distance of the Altria Theater, it wouldn’t be open anymore. MUCH better options for quality, local dining downtown.

  341. Toni Jabson 2019/03

Waited 1.5 hours but the food was worth the wait!

  342. Abigail West 2019/03

The food is amazing. Staff was great

  343. Michael Lynch 2019/03

Our go to place in Richmond. Sat at the bar and got outstanding service.

  344. Isaac Pulkkinen 2019/03

We went twice in a weekend. Unbelievable food. Amazing staff. Phenomenal atmosphere.

  345. Sarah Yubeta 2019/03

The best real Italian food! My favorites are the rockfish and the hangar steak but you can’t really go wrong with anything!

  346. Nick Lynch 2019/03

Getting past the wait (despite having a reservation), the overly crowded dining room, and the crumbling state of the building took…a lot, but the food is excellent and the staff professional. Edo’s Squid truly makes you question what is most important to you about your dining experience.

  350. Allison Adair 2019/03

Loud and crowded but the best Italian in Richmond. I highly recommend the sausage, ricotta, and broccolini pasta with spaghetti. It is spicy and delicious!

  351. Kristin Twine 2019/02

Always a good experience. The food is amazing and there are aways too many delicious things to try.

Overhyped much. Much better places, like Zorbas.

  356. Mark Mancil 2019/01

Love this restaurant. Probably the best local place for fresh Italian meals. The pasta dishes are particularly excellent. My wife and I usually get on app and one pasta to share and it’s more than enough. Highly recommend

  357. Mike Stanek 2019/01

    Great spot

  358. Phil Lesh 2019/01

Delicious Italian food, a must eat in the VCU area.

  360. Dan Ridenour 2019/01

Great local Italian restaurant. It’s a small establishment so if you plan to go at prime meal time, reservations are recommended.

  361. Jim Uhlik 2019/01

Fantastic Italian restaurant with a fresh seafood menu. The menu is written on a chalkboard and as you eat items will be erased as they run out-you’re not being served some frozen piece of fish that was bought last week.

  362. JingTeng Liu 2019/01

Their squid tastes really fresh. Taste like a fresh cut squid not from the frozen one. Their pasta size is kind of 1.5x than one personal size. Will come back for other flavors next time.

This is my favorite spot in RVA. If it’s a special occasion we are there. If we have people in town visiting, that’s the spot. If it’s my birthday, no need to ask. I’m at Edo’s. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

  366. Michael Goddard 2018/12

Great food. Family style eating so be ready to share the delectable appetizers and mains. Good friends good food and short walk to the Altrea Theater. Great night out.

  367. John Smith 2018/12

Great Italian food, but the parking is difficult to find

  369. Rob Wright 2018/12

Overpriced food disguised in a family meal style experience. Crowded, cramped, noisy. I could get the same experience eating at a church function hosted in a basement.

  370. Maggie Meyers 2018/12

It may be a tiny hole in the wall but it is the BEST food you will ever eat! The Hanger steak and broccoli rabe spaghetti are my favorites and absolutely amazing!

  371. Kayleah St. Pierre 2018/12

Walking in to Edo’s Squid you think you’re about to walk into the sketchiest place but then you open the door and it is full of welcoming servers and hosts/hostesses. Great food. Branzino was fantastic and everything else was as well. Their menu is a little confusing but it is also more of a minimalist set up so it is actually very simple. Dont forget to check their specials (posted up on the wall). Lovely staff. I thought they had great service.

  372. Sky Valenti 2018/12

The Duck is amazing. Get the Duck! The food is generally very tasty. The service is weird, of course, as this is Richmond. You can only order so many entrees, etc… It’s loud, it’s crowded, but it’s darn delicious. It’s not my vibe, but if you are coming to Richmond and have never been, it’s a must stop! And try the duck.. I’ll be back for it because it’s just that good. No pics… I ate it all! Sorry, not sorry.

  373. Claudia Thomas 2018/11

The squid and arugula is to die for

  376. Geoff Wilson 2018/11

Delicious, classic Italian with primarily seafood based dishes. Can’t go wrong with any of it, from basic spaghetti with meat sauce to grilled rock fish. They’ll give you some bread and oil dipping sauce to start, but I also recommend the fried sugartoads as an appetizer… and don’t be scared, they’re actually like a tiny fish meets a shrimp. Wine can naturally can get high in price, but there are some good Pino Gris options in the mid-30s among others. Also recommend reservations as it gets PACKED in tight.

  377. Tom DeCarlo 2018/11

  380. Tony Wilkerson 2018/10

Not only is the food very well priced it’s delish!!! Only earning 4 stars because the restaurant is a bit cramped. However, if you’ve never been then you’ve gotta go! You’ll understand why it’s cramped inside.

  381. Amber D 2018/10

Great food, real Italian! Fried oysters were amazing! Only complaint was that the bar didn’t have much variety.. Two different drinks we asked for they didn’t have the supplies to make.

  382. Drew F 2018/10

Unassuming exterior but once you walk in it’s a warm cozy restaurant. Staff are excellent, knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. The food was superior, full of flavor, and makes you want to dig in for another bite. Reasonable prices too, on an uncomplicated menu. Restaurants like this don’t come around often – here’s to long years of success for all involved. Buon appetito!

  392. Tyler Ferrari 2018/09

    Great Italian food

  393. John Haider 2018/09

Good pasta, not a huge fan of fish, but I enjoy the Rockfish! Small restaurant so definitely make a reservation.

  394. William Haneke 2018/09

Want to give more stars because the food is the real star, BUT the staff are known for being DICKS and they are super slow – hard to get a drink quickly. Sorry, but they need to work on that a LOT. Same with Mama Zu

  395. Scott Adams 2018/09

Soybean oil on the pasta. Never order takeout, or expect any service from the unprofessional manager. I’ve been to the restaurant many times to dine in, but attempting to order takeout took bizarrely long – I was told the order would be ready at 7:30. It was ready at 8:15. I had to stand waiting at the bar the entire time. The best part was the manager’s response when I complained about the wait – “this isn’t McDonald’s, buddy.” It certainly isn’t a professional restaurant either.

  396. Van Chin 2018/08

    Unprofessional manager and staff.

  397. Hervin Guidry 2018/08

Fabulous Italian restaurant! This is the real deal

  398. Dave LaBrie 2018/08

A local Richmond institution. Amazing food, huge portions, knowledgeable and friendly wait staff.

Expect a wait. This place is very popular and always packed for good reason.

  399. Warren Wallace 2018/07

As wonderful as all the exquisite entrees and specials are, I always come back for that spaghetti with meatsauce. One of my favorites.

  400. Antonia Freda 2018/07

The food was better than many italian restaurants I have been to and it had a great vibe!

  401. Jean K 2018/07

Fabulous meal and exceptionally friendly staff. Since you have to order family style, we got a double order of the seafood and pasta, which was huge and delicious. Highly recommend.

  402. pl f 2018/07

Week night dinner date. Good food, some of the dishes seemed a little higher in price than I expected. The the portion on the duck dish was large (enought for a full lunch the next day) so I’d say that made up for the cost somewhat. The bread was not good at all (dry and tasteless even with the olive oil) but that’s alright, I’ll skip it next time and have more room for food, ha. Service was decent, slow and inattentive but thankfully nothing as disastrous as other reviews mentioned. I’d go back to try some other dishes on the menu.

  403. pat frasher 2018/07

MUST make reservations! Family style dining is you may need to share table with strangers and all share all entrees. But, it is so crowded, you may not notice anyway ! Good service!

  404. Rob H. 2018/07

    …ok

Food was good. Staff was nice enough. Table bread was a little hard, and could have been fresher. Cocktails were …ok as well, but no beers on tap. Atmosphere was soso… lacked an intimate charm. About what I’d expect from a no frills mid priced restaurant.

If you happen to walk by it’s worth eating there, although I’m not sure it’s worth extra effort to drive across town for.

  405. Andy Principe 2018/06

  414. Joseph Garcia 2018/06

Great Italian food, great service. Definitely will go again. Also it gets really busy, please make sure you make a reservation.

  415. Jenny King 2018/06

Best dinner we’ve had in Richmond. The black sea bass and scallops were perfect. Seating is tight, but you don’t notice it after a few minutes. Also had the biggest piece of tiramisu ever and it was also amazing. One of Richmond’s best kept secrets.

  416. FatherDavid Sharland 2018/06

Excellent food and good service. From the appetizers to the desserts it was all delicious. The fried oysters were cooked perfectly, the Rockfish was outstanding and the pastas are to die for. They have a fine wine selection at excellent prices.

  417. Antonio 2018/06

Lovely restaurant hosted on the second floor of a building. The space itself seemed to be meant for apartment living but works well for serving food as well. At least until a visit to the bathroom. Dear god, do not visit the bathrooms. The path leading to them runs into a couple of tight corners, but once there, you’re greeted with the pungent concoction of foul aromas. On a hot day, the temperature in this room match outside. They lost 1 star from me due to this, but enough about that. The food was delicious, the plates were plentiful, and the water was cool and crisp. A great place to sit and eat with friends while picking at a platter of calamari. The service was good and the menu simple but unique. Give Edo’s a try, just use the bathroom before hand.

  418. Shelley Campbell 2018/06

    Get the braised fennel!

  419. Dylan Heatwole 2018/06

Worth every second of the wait, the food was incredible and the service was great too.

  420. Jeffrey Rathbone 2018/06

Legendary, epic, still making history..must visit..definitely a favorite restaurant in Richmond

  421. Worth Becker 2018/06

It’s a staple of the Richmond food scene. It’s been around for a long time serving amazing Italian Mediterranean dishes.

  422. Thomas Loeber 2018/06

Great food, atmosphere is a little hectic though. On the weekend you definitely need reservation for dinner, even if you come early.

  423. John Burke 2018/06

I have been here now for times and the food is absolutely unreal. They’re are times when they feel a bit under staffed during a big dinner rush, but they are always polite and trying the best to serve you well. Recommend the shrimp fra diavolo, and any of the spaghetti dishes. Best pasta in the city

  424. Molly Hyer 2018/06

The food here was very good. The fried squid in particular was some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s a little tight and loud but that is part of its nature. The entrance does look like you are walking into someone’s apartment. Service was pretty good but they were so busy we were left hanging a bit. However, our waiter comped an appetizer due to the delay so that made up for it.

  425. Thomas Porter 2018/05

  426. Daniel Stipe 2018/05

Fantastic authentic Italian food at reasonable prices.

  427. Zach Cober 2018/05

Hidden little gem in Richmond. Actual restaurant can be cozy but the food is great.

  428. Richard Booker 2018/05

Totally an awesome restaurant. My GFs bestie from HS took us there. It is small and very busy. Reservations are a must and even then expect a wait but more than worth it!

  429. annette fiddler 2018/05

Lackadaisical and slow wait service; food okay, I suppose, but very skimpy, and the spaghetti sauce was runny. Asked for butter and was told to use olive oil and vinegar from an adjacent table. Had to ask three times for lemon slices. Don’t understand the high ratings others have given this restaurant, because, sadly–and I don’t like to say this–I was disappointed and would not return.

We had a group so the meal was “family style.” That means up to 4 entrees (you are allowed to double up on them but still) and they will only accept 4 cards at the end of it. Wasn’t for my group of friends, maybe it’ll work for you.

Food was pretty good. Atmosphere was loud.

One of my favorite places to eat in Richmond when I’ve really earned an enormous plate of fresh pasta. It is a slight hidden gem in that it’s small, in a small, second floor, hole-in-the-wall location, and has an unassuming exterior, but the food and service are top-notch.

  447. Jessica Brooks 2018/03

    The food was amazing!!!

  448. Afton Sleichter 2018/03

    Cozy & always delicious!

  449. Tempie Beck 2018/03

Very cool place. Great atmosphere and great food.

  450. Daniel S 2018/03

Had reservations, got seated and waited an hour just to place an order for drinks. No waiting area so everyone is just standing over you watching you eat.

  451. Norman Latva 2018/03

Sit at the bar and let the bartender or everything for you. Everything he ordered for us was delicious. Dont let the location and building put you off. Go and eat.

  452. Jonathan Nelson 2018/03

Delicious sounding menu and nice atmosphere. The pepper tuna is over seasoned and the sauce concealed any flavor from the fish.

  453. James Catlett 2018/02

The best food you’ll eat in all of Richmond

  454. Wade O'Neill 2018/02

Excellent Italian American Cuisine. Good price point. Good value. Reminded me of an old country run “New York Italian Style restaurant”. Best to make reservations if you intend to eat later in the evening.

  455. Mayra 89 2018/02

The food is amazing reminds me of Crete, Greece! Similar to the wonderful Mediterranean food I would have on the daily cooked fresh at the local tavernas on the island.

  458. Elizabeth Bradshaw 2018/02

The food was amazing and the service was impeccable!!! Our waiter was awesome!!!!

  459. James Ludwig 2018/01

    Noisy and great family style

  460. Chris Giles 2018/01

Fast service. Have a reservation though.

  461. Angelica Bega 2018/01

Popular lunch spot. Small place though so reservations are recommended for dinner. Tremendous calamari and exceptional pastas.

  462. matt alaniz 2018/01

Amazing seafood and incredible staff. Highly highly recommend the asparagus apps as well. Just ask the staff to recommend something and you can’t go wrong.

  463. Bruno Sultanum 2018/01

Food is awesome. Try the whole Sea Bass. Really good. The marinara mussels are also amazing. The pasta portion are huge!

  464. Daniel Radecki 2018/01

Very good Italian food, with a number of seafood dishes, in a simple space. It was busy in a Wednesday night by 6, so reservations might be a good idea. The fishes of the day were well seasoned and large pieces of fish. I had the squid genevese, which was squid in a garlic and herb broth. It was enough food for two people with tons of squid and pasta in a lot of broth. Definitely worth a trip for good food.

  465. Michael Norton 2018/01

Fantastic restaurant. One of our favorites, and one of the best in Richmond. Ambiance is cozy, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Everything on the menu is delicious, though they have missed the mark on some meat temperatures at times. But that won’t stop us from going back. Get there early or try to get a reservation. Even if you get a reservation, don’t be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes. It will be worth it though.

  466. Jen Taylor Scheetz 2018/01

Wow, surprisingly excellent dining experience. Fist you have to get past the awkward stairwell and hallway to this second floor city dining restaurant. Then the place opens up to a nice dining restaurant atmosphere. The food is exceptional, service on point. I would recommend plate sharing “family style” to get to try more of the food. The also have a board with specials. The dessert menu was a bit lacking, however we did order and try all and the tasted pretty good. The portions are good and the food hits the spot when you’re craving Italian food, especially with seafood.

  467. Saran S Ross 2018/01

I really liked this place. The food was solid the service was friendly and the bathrooms were clean. The seating was a bit odd and the chair’s are VERY uncomfortable. Overall I will definitely return and recommend to others.

Every time we have dinner plans, We are going to be there. Just a place that makes you glad you choose it. Well done spot on.

  469. Jonathan Wiggins 2018/01

Great food, good drinks. It’s fairly cramped when busy but to be expected once you try the food.

  470. Yolanda Paylor 2018/01

Yum yum, simple but flavorful dishes. It gets REALLY packed at night so expect a wait. Lunch is the best time to go!

  471. Austin Adkison 2018/01

Amazing pasta! Second time eating here while in the city for the marathon. Definitely recommend for prerace dinner. Interesting atmosphere as it’s in an old upstairs apartment.

  472. Sean Case 2018/01

I would consider this place a hole in the wall, because as you approach it you might second guess you are in the right spot. Once you open the door to the restaurant it is a very cozy, intimate atmosphere. To go along with this the food is great as well. Only downside is you sometimes have to sit very close to other tables, but it is not that bad.

  473. Matt Storms 2018/01

Our waiter was a dude who went by the name of Sparkles. He was amazing. We tested him to order for us and to choose the best food. The tuna fish was amazing and the rest of the food was equal to that. I cannot write words to express how good the food and the service from Sparkles was. I totally recommend going here and asking the waiter to choose your food for you. Take a risk, it was worth it.

My husband and I are obsessed with Edo’s Squid. This little hidden gem isn’t visible from the street. If your GPS brings you to a random door that opens up to random old stairs that look like they lead to nowhere , then you’re in the right place. Definitely try the squid, white beans, and arugula salad as an app to share, followed by the Squid Genovese Pasta. D-Lish!!!

  480. Mike S. 2017/11

I’d give it 5 stars but the wait at the table for the food was horrific. I waited 20 minutes for the salad and another 1 1/2 hours for the pasta. The food is really good but plan on a long wait.

  481. LaTanya Garrett 2017/11

    The food is fantastic!!

  482. louise bryant 2017/11

Service was absolutely outstanding. Food was impeccable. If I could afford it, I’d eat here every week! I love the tasting menu idea. You get to try new foods the way the chef recommends. Definitely worth the trip!

One of my favorite places to eat. Simple and delicious food. Cozy spot and a place I love to bring new folks.

  487. Chad 2017/09

Great food! Food is fresh and made daily. The place is small so make a reservation on weekends.

  488. Kevin Forster 2017/09

After walking up a bizarre staircase that will assuredly convince you that you have the wrong location, you enter a cozy dining room. Food is a bit on the pricier side, but really top notch.

  489. Elaine D 2017/09

Had the cannelloni bean with arugula apetizer which was outstanding. Friends had calamari appetizer. We moved on to main dishes each having something different. It was all really, really good! Service was great as well. Don’t go without a reservation or you will wait a long time. A woman told us two hours without a reservation. Tables are limited and seating is tight or it would get 5 stars! It is very loud as others have mentioned so don’t plan on any serious conversation. You also have to go up some steep stairs and there’s not much room when you get to the door. Just be calm and your turn will come!

  490. Caron Nazario 2017/09

Good portion sizes but the food was bland. Disappointed that this place even made it on the “Top 50 Places To Eat in Richmond ” list. Tightly packed tables, slow service and the bread doesn’t looked like it’s stored/handled in a sanitary place.

  491. Cheri Berman 2017/08

    Not impressed by any means.

  492. Adam Bilik 2017/08

  495. Priscilla Warren 2017/08

We went on Mother’s Day so it was very crowded and it took forever for our food to come but boy was it worth the wait!!! The food was amazing! We are definitely visiting Edo’s again!!!

  496. Charles Shade 2017/08

    Just the best

  497. John Mattox 2017/08

The food was simply amazing. I’m already planning my next visit and I’m still sitting at the table on my first.

  498. Chris Unger 2017/08

No place better.. you can have a great family style meal sitting at a table or even better at the bar. Food impeccable, staff out of this world, family.

  499. abigail 2017/07

The pasta dishes are massive and delicious (lots of vegetarian options too!). The house red wine is great (and not expensive!).

  500. Howard Smith 2017/07

2017-11-18 the rockfish (probably the best I ever had), the vegetable soup, the Alfredo penne pasta and the service were excellent! This restaurant is in college town, in the heart of VCU, so we had to circle the area to find a parking spot and then walk to the door. When we walked through the door, it was a staircase, so we had to walk upstairs and then enter the restaurant (or dining room). Bathrooms are not the greatest but plenty of tables and window seating with a nice view of the surrounding area.

This place will only ever be five stars for us. Great food, fun atmosphere, accommodating for a date or large group party. Extremely reasonable prices.

  509. Peter Samuel 2017/06

Very reasonably priced for lunch, a little less so for dinner. Food is excellent nonetheless.

  510. Cheryl Kitchen 2017/06

Great food when they’ve not ran out of it. Crowded and loud with ok service. Slow with drinks, but seems like all restaurants are slow if it’s not more expensive alcohol.

  511. Mark Bean 2017/06

    Probably the best Eggplant ever!
We have been eating this food for years.. as always a wonderful treat.
The fish and meat preparations are authentic, simple and scrumptious. The Oyster Stew is not to be missed.. Broccoli Rabe with Penne… so wonderful..

    Cons: noisy and crowded.

“Good food, wait staff attentive, price moderate, Salted Carmel Gelato heavenly.”

  518. John Serrao 2017/05

A gem. Italian food with a tight menu that sticks to the basics. No bloated fettuccine alfredo here.

The specials rotate and are on point. Their pasta dishes excel, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere electric. What a place, just my style.

  519. Antonia FD 2017/04

    Garlic heaven

  520. sure2rain 2017/04

Excellent food. Located on 2nd floor accessible by stairs. Small layout. Always crowded

  521. Jonathan Abernathy 2017/04

I have gone to Edo’s for dine-in and take-out many times over the years. But it is to the point that I am entirely fed up with the complete lack of service. I will no longer give an establishment my hard earned money that doesn’t manage its business in accordance with respect and customer service.

  522. Eddie A 2017/04

    Fantastic food.

  526. James Elsis 2017/03

Hands down the best Italian restaurant in Richmond. The braised fennel is to die for, the eggplant parm as well, and the carbonara. I absolutely love the Tiramisu as well. You have to wait for a table normally and if you go on the weekend be sure to get a reservation.

  527. P Nguyen 2017/02

Overly crowded with less than mediocre food

  528. Tina Rhoades 2017/02

Service and food can’t be beat at moderate prices

  529. Andrew Lombardozzi 2017/02

  537. Bradley Saunders 2017/01

Was packed and loud but the food was well worth it. I will try going back multiple times for sure. Highly recommend it!

  538. Jeff Gschwind 2017/01

Unfortunately, the excellent food was overshadowed by the horrible service. We were told that they didn’t have butter… Really, an Italian joint that doesn’t have butter? Additionally, we were told that the bar couldn’t make a Cosmo or an Old Fashion. We met another couple fot dinner and when the bill came, she refused to split it. This waitress came from a place of “NO”. The worst part was the end as we were heading out the door, the waitress ran after us and accused us of not tipping her enough. We tipped nearly 20% even though she was pathetic. Too many great Italian restaurants in Richmond to ever go back. Too bad too because our meal was outstanding.

  539. Darlene Brunzell 2016/12

Love this bustling place. The tiramisu is the best!

  540. Seri Bell Ha 2016/12

My sister recommended the edo’s squid, so I went with high expectations. I was throughly disappointed whe I found hair inside my food. The manager grunted and asked if we wanted it new. She did not apologize nor seem even a least bit concerned. The service only went downhill fron then on. The servers were not attentive, and in my experience, edo’s squid was a terrible experience.

  541. Beverly Lopez 2016/12

Helpful staff, French bistro fare, amazing fries and the most exquisite hamburger I’ve had in a very long time. Great for groups, families with noisy young children and solo diners looking for someplace friendly. Not romantic or a place to have a serious business conversation.

  542. Dustin Dyer 2016/12

Food was excellent. The service not so much. We went on a Friday evening and felt like we were constantly having to track down our server. More geared toward a 30 and under crowd. Lively atmosphere. Not a good place to go if you want to relax and catch up with old friends.

  543. Cole Murphy 2016/12

    Pretty fancy

  544. Amy 2016/12

Very slow service!! I wasn’t a fan of the layout either, very crowded. The food was just okay and definitely not worth the money and wait times.

  545. Christopher Helme 2016/11

Love the pasta and the portions!

  546. Ben Tuckwiller 2016/11

Pretty cramped… service was OK but food was really good

  547. J Neto 2016/11

    Great food… good wine selection…

  548. Mike Moss 2016/10

Great food. Loud and very cramped. Service a bit slow but the food makes it worth it.

  549. Matthew Townes 2016/10

Atmosphere and food make it an incredible all around experience.

  550. Chad Williams 2016/09

Ask a Richmonder where to go for good local Italian and I’m sure this will appear on their short list.

  551. diana bill 2016/09

Even though I didn’t see children, I felt comfortable bringing mine and there is a healthy atmosphere. They serve in big plates and you share the food, so everyone gets a chance to try different meals. I ended up there by mistake last year while attending the District Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and I’m glad I made that mistake… We’ll be there this Saturday for sure😆!

  552. Amy Reichert 2016/09

Small space with no actual waiting area, and even if you have a reservation you should be prepared to wait at least 30 mins. It’s well worth the wait. Their pasta is vegan and portion size is huge! The Karl is my favorite, so simple and so good.

  553. Dan 2016/09

Our waitress Adrienne was so friendly and informative on what the menu entailed. We will definitely be back!

  554. Zachary Goode 2016/09

Hands down the best Italian food in Richmond. Family style service for bigger groups, which I love, but some may not like as much. Very reasonable price. Small space for the popularity, so don’t be surprised to wait without a reservation!

  555. kj c 2016/08

Fried squid and eggplant pasta are nice. But I don’t like cream pasta…

  556. James McAndrew 2016/08

Have eaten here many, many times with a party of 4 or less. Party of 5 or more are forced to eat family style. I told the manager we had one medically vegan, 1 vegetarian and 3 meat eaters. He was unwilling to budge on the menu and simply said, “that is why we give you 4 choices”. Will not return to a such un-accommadating place!

  557. John Baltor 2016/08

If you want to be completely amazed with quality food, this is where you need to go. There’s no fancy dining area with background music and waiters wearing bow ties. There’s only quality food being served by people that know they are serving some of the best dishes in the area. Go with your appetite, and prepare yourself to order more than you can eat.

  558. Joe Kennebeck 2016/08

another of my very scarce 5 star reports. but I’ve been to Edo now about 10 times total and each time I remember why I go back! i have tried many things on their menu. and i love that it changes so often.

  559. Claudio Kuhn 2016/07

    Excellent. Get the squid. Delicious.

  560. Carlos Chafin 2016/07

Wonderful Italian family fare. It’s hard to beat this place south of Philly.

  561. Roger Leek 2016/07

Without a doubt Edo’s is my favorite restaurant in Richmond. The hanger steak is amazing, I get it every time. Pasta sides are great, and I usually come home with a to-go box. The service can be hit or miss, but it’s worth it to be patient. They are always slammed and the place is incredibly loud. Have a reservation for seating in this small upstairs restaurant.

  562. Jack Hughes 2016/06

Definitely try the calamari – It’s the best in Richmond!

  563. Tyler Jarvis 2016/06

Hands down, the best Italian place in Richmond. Get a reservation, as it’s always packed, and for good reason.

  564. Donna Carter 2016/06

Excellent food and atmosphere. The duck with arugala and feta was crunchy and superb. The rockfish is delectable.

  565. Steve Vornov 2016/06

Real Italian food! Take it from a Northern Jersey boy!

  566. Corey Maylone 2016/05

Great place to eat as group. Every entree was amazingly prepared.

  567. scoobiemarioo 2016/05

Ok. So I went there two, three times. Food was good. Service was ok.
I went there again. I ordered pasta. Carbonara.
It was tasty. But third of a way trough it I found long black hair in it!!!
I don’t have to say I didn’t have to pay for it.
But. I watched kitchen staff. Most of them that day had long hair and long beards, and no HAIR NETS!!! Just baseball caps.

Few months later I decided to came back. Well. Food was good after all. We sat down. Everything was ok until I looked at silverware. There were leftovers of food on the fork. I told waitress. She swapped it. Well. Second fork had food leftovers on it too!!!
I told her again. She picked up another fork, look at it and decided that this one was ok. Well. When I looked at it, I still saw something on it. I just stuck in in water glass and cleaned it myself.

Third time we went there, they told us to pick a seat. We waited for more than 10 minutes, and nobody came over to offer water or menu. We got up and left.

One more think, waitresses there are not nice. They are not necessarily rude. But not nice. I’d expect at least to hear apologies for dirty silverware. All I got was a “look”

Needless to say I’m not going there ever again. There are plenty of other restaurants with great food and good service around VCU!!!

  568. Mike Craig 2016/04

    Rva staple.

  569. David Scanga 2016/04

Best Italian outside of NY or Italy. If in Richmond, or Virginia, or East Coast or this hemisphere, go there. Best escarole outside of my Grandma’s kitchen. Eat like kings and not spend a lot.

  570. J Cole 2016/04

Absolutely fantastic food. Great atmosphere, though it can get very loud. The service is hit-or-miss. Sometimes the waiter is great, while other times they can be very neglectful. Nonetheless this restaurant is a Richmond staple!

  571. P Pezza 2016/04

Best Italian in Richmond. The ambiance isn’t very impressive, but the food is legit. I grew up Italian-American outside of Providence, RI – a very Italian-American experience. Edo’s reminds me of the best hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurants in the Boston/Providence area. They also serve the only real Italian bread I’ve had in Virginia.

  572. Robert Jeremiah 2016/03

Getting over the entrance is well worth it. Its a surprise – when you think that you are in the wrong place keep going up the stairs. Very good Italian restaurant. We had a delightful lunch with great Italian food and got a surprise when Doug Wilder also came in for lunch

  573. Parth Vader 2016/02

If you don’t have a reservation it can take a long time to get seated on the weekends but the food is worth the wait.

  574. Jeffrey Aten 2016/01

Antipasti of squid, white bean and arugula was some of the best food I’ve had in some time.

  575. Nicholas Johnson 2016/01

The food was horrible and definitely not authentic. I worked with an Italian chef from Italy every day for two weeks and he would be ashamed of this place. The menu is like a child wrote it. Any positive reviews of this place are probably fake. Never coming back.

  576. George Shepherd 2015/12

Loud, but food is the best.

  577. Justin Wang 2015/12

Wonderful italian food. Got their conch and fried squid as apps then the broccoli rabe. All excellent choices. Can’t wait to come back here

  578. Frank Petrov 2015/12

    Fresh seafood, it’s spicy!

  579. Ali Faruk 2015/08

One of my top 3 restaurants in RVA. I’d eat here every week if I could.

  580. Daniel Walsh 2015/08

    Unpretentious, affordable and delicious.

  581. Matt Longacre 2015/04

Simply amazing pasta. The seafood is cooked perfectly.

  582. Will Phillips 2015/03

Legit. Great for an intimate date night or for a rowdy group meal. Food is delicious. Make sure to get the braised fennel!

  583. Earl Simpson 2015/03

Reservations, 45 minute wait to be seated, another 45 minutes for the first course. Others liked the food but I had lost my appetite.

  584. David Munzlinger 2015/03

The best veal marsala in the world. Literally. From NYC to San Francisco to Hong Kong, this one gets my vote. The Meat is Perfectly Cooked and the sauce is to die for. It is magically delicious.

I found this dish at Edo’s years ago. I venture to Richmond every year to treat myself to a double meat portion of this amazing dish. It never disappoints. Perfect everytime.

If you find yourself in Richmond VA and want a great meal this is absolutely it.

I am sure their other dishes are good as well but seriously the magic in this veal marsala dish is special and you are an idiot if you don’t order it.

    Thanks

Place was jam packed, loud, overcrowded, they charged me twice. I paid with cash and they charged my credit card. Ended up paying double the original check! The waitress was rude, didn’t know how to explain the menu correctly. On top of all this the food wasn’t even that good, something I could probably just make at home. I was surprised everything was this bad based on the reviews that I read. I would think twice about going to edo’s.

One of Richmond’s most consistently incredible restaurants. Come hungry and plan on having a few courses. Especially great for groups of more than a few, where you dine family style and it’s easy and encouraged to share everything. It’s a small, tight space though, so be prepared for a din at busy times. Reservations strongly recommended for dinner.

There isnt much attention given to the building. The sign is peeling and the interior offers nothing at all. But luckily your here for the food so that doesn’t matter now does it! Never disappoints! The house red is fantastic and do yourself a favor and order the hanger steak.

My girlfriend and I went to Edo’s Squid today for the first time for lunch. We ordered an appetizer and 2 pasta entrees. We waited about 30 minutes for the entrees and then when we got our entrees, we were discussing about how tasty everything was. About 5 minutes into the meal, I found a strand of hair in my pasta and decided to pull it out and put it in on the app. plate. Due to me having previous restaurant experience, I decided to initially not let our server know. About 5 minutes later, my girlfriend found a strand of hair in her bowl as well and pulled it out and put it on the same plate. After that, we decided we needed to let our server know of this since it happened to both of us. The server came by and we told and showed her the plate. She immediately apologized and took the plate back. Soon after, she came up and apologized again and asked if we wanted them to remake us the same dishes, but we declined and asked if we can get another order of the appetizer. When we got the check, we saw that we got charged for the 2 appetizers (which were correct) and for one of the entrees. The “bartender” came over and asked if she can take the check up and I proceeded to ask her why we were getting charged for the entree if we returned it because it had hair in it. She told us that because they couldn’t prove that the hair belong to someone in the kitchen, the fair thing to do was to charge us for one of the entrees because “they’re not a business that gives away free food”. I was offended by this statement because it sounded like she was trying to imply that maybe we staged the hair in our plates to get a free meal. I asked her if she thought it was our hair and she said she can’t say who it belongs to. After going back and forth, we just paid for the check. Out of all my previous experiences, I’ve never ran into a situation where the customer was made to feel like they did something wrong and had to pay for it. The business was definitely not customer oriented.

Definitely need a reservation! The atmosphere is very cozy but very unique and love looking over the fan “skyline”. The food is great and full of garlic…which I love!

Was waiting at the bar for over an hour to eat and let one of the servers, Jace I think his name was, know we had been waiting for over an hour and his response was “Do you have reservations? No you don’t so you’re just going to have to wait.” Rudest staff I have ever seen and to make it worse one of the cooks started yelling at another customer who was waiting as well and cursing at the customer. I definitely do not recommend going there for the customer service. The food on the other hand was ok, not great but ok, seasoning was a bit bland and the prices were slightly overpriced for the portion you receive. I am not a large person either, 167lbs, 5’11”. At the end of the meal I was just so put off by the service and the long wait and rudeness of the staff that I can’t recommend this place to anyone.

It’s my birthday. My friend took me to edo’s. The food is out of this world. 5 stars… will come back here many more. Don’t look at the cost. It the food you look at.

This place epitomizes hole in the wall. Very good food and wonderful staff. My date and I loved it

It is all about the food here. The decor is barely visible at night, as the place is very dimly lit. It’s loud (if there are large groups there, it gets very loud). But you’ll be hard pressed for better italian food in Richmond.

The prices reflect the quality. It’s not cheap, but it’s not prohibitively expensive. It is uncannily delicious.

Just go once if you are undecided but in the mood for really great italian cuisine.

There’s a reason why this place is always packed – every thing I’ve had there was great. Not sure why Google insists that I Disliked the food. The food is great. UnDisLike!

    Very rude

I love this restaurant. The food and the atmosphere are amazing. The servers are knowledgeable, but it would be nice if they were a tad bit more attentive. Would definitely recommend this place as a richmond must-see.

The food at his restaurant is slightly above average. It’s not worth the wait, the hassle, or the just good enough service.

Also, keep in mind that if you bring in a party of larger than 4 they will force you to order 4 entrees served family style. You’ll pay for the privilege of having to negotiate at your table between your party of what you get to eat that evening. All at premium prices.

The justification is that they cook everything fresh, etc, etc, Plenty of other restaurants in the city do the same such as Cafe Rustica, The Black Sheep, and Acacia. The restaurants I just listed are better than Edo Squid and deserve your patronage by not setting arbitrary limits on service and ordering. Avoid Edo’s and visit the others so that you and your loved ones can order exactly what you want even if Aunt Nelly absolutely must have watered down marinara and noodles.
