As far as sushi places go, this one is a keeper.
It’s a small storefront, so the dining room can feel a little cramped when it’s full on a Saturday, but it wasn’t loud. The host is very gracious and the service was delivered well. Food was good, edamame was fresh and hot, combo #8 was almost enough for two, plus a couple extra sashimi. The mackerel was perfect. Prices are reasonable for the quality. Definitely worth checking out.

This place is wonderful. I had heard about Akida for years from family, saying they have “the best lunch deal in town.” I have yet to eat here for lunch, but I have come for dinner over a dozen times. EVERY time, the service is excellent, the food is fresh, and the ambiance can’t be beat. Akida is a great part of the Richmond restaurant scene.

Tiny gem in the middle of Richmond. We stopped by on the way home after spending a day in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts nearby. Akida was definitely a great choice. Great food, amazing service. Chicken and Beef Teriyaki dishes all came out straight from the kitchen sizzling. Dragon rolls were amazing as well. (Definitely deserve the dragon name :)) – spicy.

Akida is probably one of the better Japanese restaurants in town and has been my place to frequent. Unfortunately they don’t compare to restaurants up in NOVA. I would recommend coming here for some sushi/sashimi or chirashi.

  38. SugarWheats 2022/11

Update 06/14/22: Still amazing. Tried some other rolls here, and I have been to several other sushi places and this is a notch above the others in the surrounding areas.

First Sushi I ever fell in love with. The staff were very friendly. I went there on a whim with someone else who loves sushi. I have tried sushi before from other places but I did not like it. Almost gave up on it. I didn’t pick out what we were having so I didn’t see the ingredients because I would talk myself out of it. So we ended up with some California rolls and the Akida Rolls. I ate with an open mind and it was one of the tastiest foods I have put in my mouth. It was an enjoyable experience and I can’t wait to go back to that hole in the wall even though I now know what I ate.

Two stars for the food. Gained half a star for the service.
Facts about the restaurant: It is a bit small, but has a quaint, home style vibe. The dining menu is incredibly extensive, possibly over 50 different food options (it could overwhelm some people).

The service: Server was polite and attentive. Decent service.

The food: The miso soup was probably the worst miso soup I’ve had in Richmond thus far. I’ve made miso soup myself from scratch, and I’ve bought instant miso soup packets and they both were better quality than what my friends and I received when we dined in. The soup itself was warm, and had almost no flavour. Their Dashi proportion must have been off that day. The sushi was very okay, borderline not okay. There is a quality difference in the salmon roll vs. the salmon and avocado roll. Both use raw salmon, but the one with avocado was lower quality or simply older compared to the only salmon and sashimi salmon. The meat was visibly darker, and had a different consistency, indicating it must have been older, and the flavour tasted off. The salmon avocado was the worst one in terms of product quality. The combo I ordered was a decent price, but the freshness of the salmon avocado and the miso was not up to par for me. I think the other menu items are too pricey for how much you get and the quality. Plus, only combo meals receive miso soup; the other menu items do not. I heard this restaurant used to be good, but when the chef changed, the quality decreased. The quality, price, and quantity do not encourage me to return.

What a great little gem in the middle of Richmond in the Devil’s Triangle. This was our first time trying Akidas. We were celebrating the end of my daughters cheerleading season and she and I tend to try new sushi places. We drove by a couple it a couple of times before we noticed it was in between a few other places. It’s not the biggest joint but it was fairly busy when we got there. We saw that the small table in the back for two. They had two waitresses working and they were very attentive. We ordered an appetizer of edamame and then for different sushi rolls. We got a yellowtail, ungai, spider and then a Manhattan roll. The food came pretty quick it look like they had to guys behind the sushi bar working. Everything was very fresh and tasty. The sushi seem to be a good quality and we were very happy with all of it. Probably the only thing I didn’t like was sitting at the little to top we are right in front of the bathroom so we can hear every flush that happened but that’s just do to it being a tiny place. I would highly recommend and I definitely would come back.

I have always had great experiences here, before and during covid- ordering over the phone is a breeze. I witnessed a customer getting upset with the staff because of the wait for pick up and the staff handled the situation very well. This place has great food! Of course it’s gonna be busy! Despite waiting a little bit past the original quoted time, my food was fresh and correct. Will be back again and again!

  75. Austin Kinneberg 2021/12

Don’t give many 5 star reviews. I love sushi and richmond is not where one goes for it. I’ve tried many places around the tri-cities. This is not the most expensive one, however it’s the best quality sushi I’ve found. Yes it may be a hole in the wall, but many good sushi places are. This may make it difficult for social distancing, but consider pick up if that alarms you. Can’t recommend enough. Staffs pretty good too. I’ve had my order messed up once in about twenty visits.

What a quaint little neighborhood restaurant! Huge selections of specialty rolls, plus regular full menu. Sushi was well made and was very creative. My husband is on low carb diet, he really enjoyed the Naruto Roll made with no rice. Diced Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, and Avocado were wrapped in cucumber slices, decorated with Flying Fish Roe. I ordered the Sky Roll and never had anything like it. Minced Spicy Salmon was mixed with Tempura crunch to form a square base, Rice and Spicy Tuna were in the middle, topped with Lobster Salad and Red Tobiko, drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayonnaise sauce. It was delicious!

  80. Maranda Riccione 2021/10

We had tuna rolls and sashimi (that didn’t come with any rice under it) and took one bite of it and had to spit it out, tasted as if the tuna had gone bad. No one could eat the rest of it…Disappointed, reviews looked great for this one.

  81. kathleen kilpatrick 2021/10

Akida has been my go to place for years, even before they moved to this cute spot a few years ago. The food is great, well priced – specially for the lunch combos, which will have you skipping dinner they are so generous — and the staff is friendly. I often schedule meetings there because it’s also quiet for conversation. Even my non-sushi guests can enjoy tempora or teriyaki. Now that I live farther out of Richmond, I never miss a chance to go when I am in town and am comfortable being there alone.

Update: with the advent of Covid, I still use this great little place for pickup. The food is as good as ever and the procedures safe. It’s very nice to have a healthy option for quick pickup.

  82. Emily Ricci 2021/10

Ordered takeout last night. Sushi rolls pretty good, though they didn’t give me any soy sauce which I thought was odd? FYI I also got the side salad which was just three pieces of iceberg lettuce in a styrofoam cup. So wouldn’t recommend that.

Food wasnt bad but nothing I want to write home about. Sushi and sake were pretty typical. The service was not up to par for me. With being the only ones in the place to start, it was still slow and the server was short with us and was either annoyed that we werent talking fast enough or walking straight past our table when we are visibly looking for assistance. It was busy before we left and the service didnt even suffer, it was just always bad.

Was nervous to call in an order because im not good with accents over the phone but they were easy to understand, extremely sweet and accommodating and the food is amazing! I HATE seaweed and they were able to substitute with soy paper so i can finally eat sushi! Im so in love.

  96. Cheryll Smith 2021/03

The restaurant is very small but has a very nice vibe to it. The alcoholic drink menu is very small, about 5 beers and some sake only, however I did not ask if they do mixed drinks. The sushi menu is fairly big, a lot of specialty options to choose from! The sushi is fresh and very good. Would highly recommend.

  100. Melissa Bigos 2021/02

Service and atmosphere were excellent! The server with the purple hair was super nice and hospitable and so was the rest of the staff. However, not sure how they received top ratings for sushi. I’ve had better sushi from a grocery store.

  101. Dillon Rosel 2021/01

    Best sushi in town.

  102. Ü Lee 2020/11

The restaurant is small but clean. The staffs are very friendly. My 3 yo finished all the steamed dumplings on her own. Both the katsu don and the unagi don were delicious. The udon noodles were nicely done and very filling. Teriyaki chicken was also tasty. A changing table would be nice to have in the restroom, and we were lucky not having to need it on the day we visited.

As a retired female Marine I have been stationed in California and other places so needless to say I’ve had sushi and sashimi a lot. My children have been eating it since they were very young. I can honestly say that the sushi and sashimi wasn’t bad at all… However I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and by far it was the worst I’ve ever had. The chicken was rubbery, fatty and it had no grill marks. It tasted as if it had been boiled and reheated…The teriyaki sauce tasted as if it was watered down. The rice was overcooked and gummy. The vegetables were extremely overcooked too. I tried to find something positive and even had my children try it and they couldn’t eat it themselves. I suggest you just eat the sushi and sashimi…

  109. Jason Garrigan 2020/07

    Favorite sushi spot in Richmond.

Their combo meal (salad or soup, appetizer, two rolls plus one specialty roll) is a really good deal. They are usually busy and could use a bigger space, so recommend doing take out.

  134. Hawgwld N Hartlss 2019/10

Not the best, but not the worst sushi I’ve ever had. I personally don’t like raw fish and the variety of options with only cooked fish in them was minimal.

  135. Marcus Berglund 2019/09

The sushi is tender and fresh. We had the lunch menu, It’s 10 dollar for a set menu that includes salad, miso soup, sushi and sashimi. If I would live closer I’d be there every day.

  136. Morgan Clemons 2019/09

Small authentic and down right delicious. Never a disappointment. With quick friendly service and an open styling, this place is a cozy retreat for a nice date. Seats fill up fast at rush times, very few tables. Planning or timing is important if you want to cat h a meal here on a weekend.

  137. Spicy Peanut 2019/09

Skids is an excellent sushi place that we have been going to for Upward of 15 years. As always today the food was great the soup was hot salad was cold and the sushi was fresh. Can I ask for more¡ Oh yes you can. You can ask for the great service we got to.

Some of the best sushi I’ve had. I love the aesthetic inside, quality service even when busy. Unfortunately we had to wait for a good while since the restaurant is pretty small but in the end I would say it was worth it. The mochi ice cream especially was amazing

  149. Harsh Achukola 2019/06

Absolute disappointment and disastrous food. I think this is the first time I had sushi that looked as if it had canned tuna and salmon. Also, the beef teriyaki dish literally had no flavor.

Extensive menu. Quick service. Everything tasted fresh and excellent. Very small, so could possibly get crowded at times, but we had no trouble getting seated for lunch.

  151. Lindsey Strain 2019/06

Cute little place with friendly wait staff. The sushi came out really quickly for our table, which was great. We considered doing the special, which gives the ability to choose from four different categories to make a full meal, but instead to get a variety of rolls. I really liked my roll choices a lot.i would recommend!

  152. Tianna “Ty June” Storey 2019/06

A really nice and quaint place. Food is amazing as well as the staff.this place only sits 35 people at the most. We got there as soon as they opened for dinner. They are only open for lunch(sometimes) dinner, opens at 5pm.

My go-to reasonably priced sushi place in all of Richmond. Service is great, the place is tiny (so there is sometimes a wait to be seated) but well worth the dinner special where you get 2 sides and 2 rolls.

  163. Simon Lau 2019/03

Decent sushi in Richmond. Had Pam’s roll and Jason’s roll which was good. Also got the Agedashi tofu appetizer which wasn’t good. Instead of soft tofu deep fried with a light batter, it was just cubes of fried tofu that was not fresh. (Tasted like the frozen ones)

What a hidden gem of Richmond! The food quality is amazing, the staff is excellent, and the prices are fair. It’s a little small and always busy, so be prepared to wait a bit, but it’s absolutely worth it.

  168. Lauren Knowles 2019/02

Very good but it’s small and often crowded. Have a back up plan in mind just in case it’s too busy.

  169. Jimmy Chapman 2019/02

  170. Christine M 2019/02

  171. Han Chen 2019/02

I got a fly in the udon soup!!!! It’s my worst experience in a Japanese restaurant which I always assume they are at least clean. But this one it’s just gross. And the waitress was keeping excusing about broccoli sometimes had flies…

  172. Joshua Griffin 2019/02

Have been going for many years, very consistent. Good quality, great prices, great service, good ambiance. Sometimes it can be crowded, parking not usually an issue. I wish their sashimi was a little fresher, it’s good but not perfect.

  173. Brandi Adams 2019/02

Lives up to everything that is said about it

  174. Lindsey Brown 2019/02

    Simple, high quality sushi rolls.

  175. Korrie Koko 2019/02

Some of the best rolls I have ever had. Anything with salmon is delicious. Anything with salmon, crunchies, and deep fried is even better. I would like to know how Richmond has access to some mighty fine tasting fish. I’ve had seafood in VA beach before, but it did not taste as fresh and tender than the fish at Akida. Since I’m not from here, I have to splurge around $70 every time because the rolls are that amazing. I cry when I miss Akida. If I lived near here, that’d be the end of my savings.

  176. Jonathan Murdoch-Kitt 2019/01

  177. Amanda Stanley 2019/01

Great food, wonderful service, cute atmosphere

  178. Joshua Jacobs 2019/01

Great service, fish was high quality, very happy. Only reason it’s 4 stars instead of 5 is the spicy is not very spicy.

  179. Alexander Ricker 2019/01

Really good sushi spot. It’s always packed bc it’s a small space but for some reason whenever we go we never have to wait. Is there a better sushi spot in Richmond ?

  180. Thuy-Mi 2019/01

There are so many roll options it was a little.intimidating, so we did the special combo which made the list much more manageable, and a pretty good deal too. Each combo is ~$18 for a miso soup, appetizer, classic roll, and special roll. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the steamed dumplings

Great experience, prices aren’t bad for what you get and the server was also very attentive. Very authentic place. Stopped in for a quick lunch date. I found the menu to be diverse with many options of apps, soups, and rolls. The rolls ranged from gold standards to local creations. We settled on 2 different combination plates because we couldn’t make up our mind between all the great choices. The fish was fresh and flavorful, the texture of the rice was spot on, and the grade of seaweed was excellent. We will be back again!

Wonderful fish quality with the exception of crab (they use something similar to surimi) and very cost-effective for the quality you get. Love this place, took a star off because the restaurant is so small that you’ll almost always be on a wait for a table and because their crabmeat wasn’t real. Definitely in my top 5 sushi places with Tokyo Sushi in Richmond at #1.

Dont be fooled by the small street presense. The sushi and cooked dishes are good. The prices are good. The bâsic sushi lũnch is $10.
They have great combo choices for under $13. The staff are nice and since the place is small service is quick.

    Great service!

  240. Shannon Roulet 2018/02

Decent sushi and miso, really good seaweed salad. Also a lot of cool sake and beer selections. It is very tiny i.e. not a huge waiting area so watch out for the dinner rush.

  241. Jessica Henao 2018/02

Many options but sushi was just ok. They only have white rice. Shrimp shu-mai was ok.

Giving 5 Stars for their Lunch Special – got 5 Sushi pieces, 1 California Roll, rice, miso soup, and a salad, total came to $11 w/ Tax!

The sushi itself was alright, might come back for dinner to try it again. I will say the Salmon piece I got was ENOURMOUS, which made it a little difficult to get down. Not the nicest sushi but for RVA standards it seems solid!

  246. Barbara Bivens 2018/01

Cute neighborhood restaurant. Great lunch selection at a reasonable price. Wish I lived close enough to walk there for lunch!

  247. Nathália M. 2018/01

Best hidden gem of RVA. Usually, this place is packed and the wait can be long. So, we only come here when we are lucky to spot empty tables. The sushi here is consistently good so is the quality of the meat. There are combos if you want to try before getting the chef’s special. Also, there are options in the menu if you don’t feel like eating sushi or simply don’t like such as Chicken Katsu don in the picture. Don’t be fooled by the bowl size as it does come a substantial amount of food. Same as Chirashi Chef’s Special (pictured). The service is always great. So if you are in for some japanese food I recommend this place.

Went to Akida one random night with my wife. Happened upon it just searching for Richmond’s best sushi and it happened to be close to where we were. I’m very glad we went there! The sushi was ridiculously fresh and tasty! The wife and I sat at the sushi bar and ate there as this is unfortunately a very small place. But if you like sushi this is the place to go, even if you have to wait for a seat!

I love the rainbow roll! Also the sushi chefs are rad and gave us an extra snack!

The prices are great for the amount and quality of sushi that you receive. It is a small restaurant. When I went it was really packed. However still a good experience.

My favorite sushi place in Richmond (sans tator tots). Really, it’s my favorite for a more traditional sushi experience. Love the new location, too.

  262. Tania Zurnaci Thornton 2017/08

My FAVORITE sushi place in Richmond. Their lunch specials are a great deal. I love every roll I’ve had here. It’s always super fresh and tasty! Their combos are a good way to get a few rolls at a good price too. This place is worth every penny. I love their miso soup too. For someone who doesn’t want sushi, I’d recommend the Teriyaki Salmon- it’s incredible.

  266. Danny Habersetzer 2017/08

You’re in for a treat. We ordered the party platter #3 for two. Sushi pieces, sashimi, and assorted rolls. Chef’s choice, and worth it. The price was very reasonable for the high quality and sheer amount of sushi. We’ll be back!

  267. Bee Queen 2017/07

Sushi is on-point always. Service is great!

  268. Sven Hans Knecht 2017/07

Sushi was okay, but nothing amazing. I may have just been there in a bad day though.

  269. Jonathan Delp 2017/07

The sushi is fine, nothing to write home about. But they were quite rude to the mother having dinner with her child beside us – moved them mid meal to a table in the back to make more space for a group.

  270. Seth Ganz 2017/06

Always amazing, great staff, and good food.

  271. Kohiro Y 2017/06

Worst I ever had. Nothing was fresh so they had to make it into rolls and if they dare to call that sushi then they had shame the Japanese culture.

  272. Michael Stephens 2017/05

    Outstanding sushi, yum

  273. Joseph 2017/05

I’ve been going to this restaurant for years now with my family for birthday celebrations. They’ve always had great sushi and the staff are very friendly!

  285. John Mallon 2017/02

Came with friends. It was vevy busy for such a small restaurant, but once we were actually seated we were served pretty promptly. wasn’t expecting to find much to enjoy, being a vegetarian, but I was pleasantly surprised. The sweet potato tempura came sushi rolled, and I’d order it again.

  286. louise bryant 2017/02

The food was, as always, excellent. It is a rare treat to dine at Bibou, however, because it is BYOB the experience is affordable and worth it

  287. Jason Estes 2017/02

Best sushi in RVA, period. The staff remembers you and is always friendly. I have no reason to look elsewhere for sushi. 🙂

  288. Tabi Godsey 2017/01

  289. William Harriman 2017/01

For a bit more on price, you can enjoy some quality sushi. The real deal here is there lunch special where you can get a salad, miso soup, and five nigiri sushi and a roll for around twelve dollars at the time of this review. If you like sushi, come here.

  290. Tristen Pegram 2017/01

Great eel roll. Great miso soup. Great teriyaki steak (huge). And great shrimp cucumber roll (not on menu). If there is not something u see on the menu, just ask them to make it how u want! Thinking this might be our new “go to” for asian takeout!

  294. Aaron Waxman 2016/10

Best sushi in Richmond. They always provide great service, and I’ve never had a bad experience.

  295. Tyler C. 2016/09

Great Sushi, end of story. Nice casual environment, tucked away and sorta off the beaten path is the vibe that I get. But the Sushi is excellent, and has been every time.

I hadn’t visited Akida since it was located on Robinson St. I had been very excited to go back for a good number of years, but, like some, there has been a great Depression of the economy going on. Finally, I went Akida to celebrate getting a decent job. It was not what I was expecting even after looking over their menu on-line in advance. It is a very different atmosphere. I usually just purchase sushi, miso, a Japanese beer or some saki, and some green tea. So I tried one of their dinner specials with some shrimp and vegetable tempura, a couple rolls, miso, and had them bring some squid and octopus sushi as well (which the waitress did try to steer me clear of). I could have bought a pack of miso soup from Krogers, and it would have been just as good. I’m not a veteran of tempura, so that seemed okay but pricey to me. Saki was fine and the green tea was passable. The sushi (main reason for me going) was horrid. I maybe their rice cookers were on the fritz, but what rice there was – an there wasn’t much of it – was simply plain rice. Their was more squid and octopus than there was rice and there wasn’t much of that. I don’t mind paying for decent food; I do mind paying high prices for a little bit of food that is of poor quality. I can somewhat understand the combo meal lacking quality through out; I can not understand the low quality of individual purchased menu sushi items. I have frankly had better sushi at Kroger’s and Martin’s and not paid the prices that I paid here. If I was to rate Akida the way that I remembered it when it was on Robinson St, I would have given it a 5 stars. 1 Star for this new incarnation.

  297. Amanda Rogers 2016/09

I got the uni and it was disgusting, like really old or something, they still charged me for it. I accidently ordered the wrong roll, I didn’t eat a single bite of what they gave me, they didn’t offer to replace it and I still got charged for it. The service was ok if you don’t count the fact that they didn’t care about your experience there. The salmon was the only thing that was actually good. I do not recommend this place.

  298. Christian Wiedow 2016/08

Best sushi in Richmond hands down.

  299. Anthony Ricco (yabbadabbadooozy) 2016/08

$10 lunch special, 3 rolls and miso soup. It tasted fresh and delicious.

  300. Kirk Roberts 2016/07

Nom nom. There are only ever the same two servers working, and they are both super friendly, and the food’s tasty. What more can you ask for?

  301. Clementina Calabrese 2016/06

Akida is my neighborhood go-to for takeout Japanese food. Emphasis on takeout. For what they charge, the portions should be larger or the service better, something – but it is what it is: a neighborhood Asian restaurant for when Chinese food gets old.
Is it great? No, but it’s still pretty darn good. Is it good value for money? Not if you eat there without an expense account – if you have an expense account, there are better places to go in town.
Drink prices are extoritonate! A bottle of Kirin or Asahi is $5. A Sapporo can is $8 – Order takeout and grab a 6-pack across the street or at one of the other convenience stores nearby. If you’re a sake fan, it’s not so bleak . prices are more reasonable and the selection isn’t bad.
The sushi’s decent, but the tonkatsu-don (pork cutlet on rice) and unagi-don (eel on rice) are excellent. The pork isn’t fried until it’s like jerky, and the light touch with the frier extends to the rest of the menu. The eel is great, and the portions are good – but what’s essentially a bowl of rice with a pork chop on top (or a few slices of eel) costs $10 or $15, depending on whether you get pork or eel. The “salad” is just iceberg lettuce with French dressing or peanut sauce on top, and the miso is instant.
Service is rushed; more than once I’ve ordered some edamame as an appetizer only to have it come out at the same time as my entrée. By the time I finish the edamame the miso is lukewarm, and the pacing of the experience is just – off. It’s rushed, at best.
Drinks are expensive! Unless you’re a sake freak, get takeout, and buy some Kirin ($5) or Asahi ($5) or Sapporo ($8 [!] – I thought it had to be a typo, even a clip joint of a karaoke bar in Annandale didn’t charge that much for a beer) somewhere else. I usually try to find a bar seat; sometimes the sushi chefs will hand you a piece of sushi/sashimi gratis – a welcome exception to the prices they charge.
Try ordering take-out and eating it somewhere nearby – the neighborhood around the new location is much more accommodating than the old Robinson Street hole-in-the-wall. Find a bench, have a picnic. Brown-bag it if you’re not interested in meeting RPD for drinking in public.
I’m inclined to give it three stars, it gets an extra star because they know how to cook pork. (For comparison, when I ordered tonkatsu from a place in Mesa, AZ, I got two massive slabs of leather and some barbecue sauce. That might say more about Arizona than the restaurant, but good pork is good pork)
I haven’t tried any other Japanese joints in RVA, but I have elsewhere, and Akida suffices for what it should be: a takeout place.

This is the best sushi in the world.

  303. Elizabeth O'Meara 2016/03

Delicious, fresh sushi with good service. The only downside is that it’s tiny and there is no place to wait for a table without blocking the door or standing right next to folks enjoying their dinner. First world problem, but a factor nonetheless.

Pretty good sushi. Decent prices. Service took a little while, but it’s nice inside and has courteous staff.

  306. Sharon Russell 2014/12

Amazing…. kind people and the very best, fresh sushi in Richmond! Really impressed.

  307. Wes Stigall 2014/06

It IS the best Sushi in Richmond. Is there as good or better Sushi out there? Sure, but NOT in Richmond. It is not overpriced; costs less than places like Kobe and Osaka. The ingredients are as fresh as you’re going to find in a non-coastal town. People might forget this and give it a low rating because it’s not as good as what they had one time at the beach somewhere…ridiculous. Is this rating system a way to rank all restaurants against each other? No. It should be used to rate them based on what’s comparable in town and against what the restaurant is trying to be, i.g., I’m not going to blame Outback for not being as good as Morton’s. I’m appalled to find a review like the one from Tang Haji Omar on the Most Helpful list. He doesn’t give any other places that he likes better, orders fried chicken at a Sushi bar, and complains about the noodles – judging by his other reviews he likes Korean food(Korean noodles will be cooked much differently and maybe that’s what he’s basing the “doneness” against). He also goes on to state “Sushi was low quality but fishy”….what? I’m going to assume that’s supposed to be an “and” instead of “but”, again, why is this a helpful review? One star! Give me a break Tang, I got your katsu sauce right here! Then there’s Val Schuman, who just wants everyone to know she’s from New York. She decided the sushi is not be very good partly because she may, or my not, have seen a homeless person nearby…ffs. I can’t help but think she’s comparing this place to a restaurant in a big coastal city with a large Asian population…can’t remember the name of the town…maybe you can remind me Val.

Great sushi! Amazing quality fish and some of the fastest service ever seen in a sushi restaurant. Highly recommend.

  311. Val Schuman 2011/12

We’re from NY and I guess a little spoiled, because we really like sushi and have been to a ton of various sushi places. We stopped for a night in a hotel in Richmond, decided to find some sushi, read the raving reviews about this place and decided to check it out.
What we liked: small, cozy place. Got a free and very tasty appetizer. Nice green tea.
What we disliked: Poor neighbourhood, a few folks around the place looked homeless. The fish isn’t fresh. In fact, it’s pretty stale. The rice isn’t good sushi rice. It’s better than costco sushi rice (which is the worst), and it’s edible, but it’s not enjoyable. The rainbow roll cost $10+ and was really not worth it, the spicy tuna roll was really bad, probably the worst I’ve had, and I have had plenty of bad sushi… Oh, and to my great surprise, the green tea, which is always a must in sushi places and is *always* free, actually cost like $2.75! That just amazed me… I don’t know, maybe I am spoiled by NYC sushi… Anyway, to top it off, the restroom had a square foot of mold growing on the ceiling, the toilet wouldn’t flush and I was lucky enough to get the last few sheets of paper towels. We paid $62 for two people – way overpriced.

  312. Steele Parris 2011/07

Very nice selection of sushi and other cuisine. Affordable as well.

  313. Dennis Little 2008/12

My wife and I discovered Akida last weekend. It is a hole-in-the-wall place with what seems like barely enough seating for 20 people, but the food was very good and very fresh. Service was excellent and the price was exactly what I would have expected; my wife and I had dinner for $40 with tip.

Parking is a bit of a pain; the bank next door tows restaurant-goers and you have to find somewhere on the street.

Although the building might suggest otherwise, everything seemed clean. Compared to other Japanese hangouts in downtown, I would choose Akida every time.
